The Wii Gets a Redesign

This Christmas, the Nintendo Wii is a getting a slight, wait for it, Wii-design. I mean redesign!

According to The Official Nintendo Magazine, the tweaked Wii will be released in the UK this holiday season (no word about a US release).

The change is that this Wii is designed to lay flat and has a slightly reconfigured design. The original Wii was supposed to sit vertically. The upcoming Wii U console sits flat, so the tweak could be to bring cohesion between the two machines. Or it could bring confusion.

The biggest difference is that this console cannot play GameCube games like the current Nintendo Wii.

The redesigned console comes packed with a Wii Remote Plus, a Nunchuk and, according to this photo from Eurogamer, copies of Wii Sports and Wii Party.

Expect more details like pricing and non-UK availability.

Will it still come with the stand? Regardless, as much as the inclusion of the Wii Remote Plus, a Nunchuk and [according to this photo from Eurogamer] copies of Wii Sports and Wii Party, Wii sales and general interest is very much seemingly on the decline. :(

Not to sound rude but does anyone actually use their Wii anymore? I haven't used mine in over a year and a half.

Mine just sits there, not because of the games, just because I have no darn free time at home... I love old SNES games and stuff and the new mario games where good, heck I haven't even finished them due to lack of time :(

That too ... but I just mean there are so many great games released for XBOX and PC and PS3 where the Wii it's like 1 or 2 good titles a year. I am still waiting for the next Zelda game.

I've used it occasionaly - I've managed ot pick up some good games for dirt cheap, like Metroid: Other M and Disaster Day of Crisis for ?4.99 each. Still wanting to pick up Super Mario Galaxy 2 if it ever gets down to ?19.99, but alas Nintendo published first party games rarely go down in price, unless they become part of their "selects" range.

I mess with it occasionally, mostly it's my daughter though, she still plays on it a lot along with watching Netflix. I'm not big on console gaming, 99% of time when I'm gaming it'll be on the PC. One of the bigger consoles would just be a waste.

True, but Nintendo sold millions upon millions of units, and the Wii U could potentially be a huge success.

Hmmm, so they are just essentially giving you less for the same price?

Is there somebody new in charge at Nintendo because ever since the Wii U unveil-fail and the 3DS flop, they don't seem like the same company.

Mine already sits flat, news?

I thought this as well. Mine also sits flat; apparently only the first generation Wii's have the ability to sit flat without screwing up the game discs, from what I've been reading online.

As does mine, but it's not designed to sit flat. The way all the text faces and the inclusion of the base means that it was designed to sit upright while this new one is designed to be flat.

mine just sits there and every once in a while my neighbors kids will come over and use it however, i probably use it once a year or so anymore.

Doesn't look any different to me.

Well, besides the new internals not being able to play GameCube anymore, look at the labels on the cover. They are facing the long edge of the console while the old Wii had the labels facing the short edge.

Gamecube support was all done software side, Gamecube mode was just a hypervisor of sorts. The ONLY savings they've cut here are the additional Gamecube ports. All other stuff, like the software, would cost money to take out, due to bug testing and whatever.

They probably still save quite a bit by making the design simpler without the extra ports

So Nintendo pushed it over and decided to stick with it, lol.

It is a pity about a loss of GC BC but i'm not surprised, and the fact that they are getting rid of the GC controller ports which means I won't want to pick one of these up because I can't stand using the WiiMotes for games such as Mario Kart and SSB.

Oh, bull****. The Wii was designed to be used either way. Why else would it have feet on the side (or bottom, as shown in the above picture)?

edit: that being said, if any of you who aren't using your Wii want to get rid of it, I'll gladly take it off your hands, I'll even pay for the shipping.

+1, the Wii was designed to be used both ways, although most people used it vertically

I agree that "designed" might be too strong a word :) but it was definitely meant to be facing a certain way when you see all the press pictures available besides the way the text faces.

So Nintendo is taking their cues from Sony now? New slims removed PS2 game support... And the other OS option.
