Lets hear it! Iimmersive UI (Start Panel) in Windows 8 (Desktop) Good?

  1. 1. I think the Iimmersive UI (Start Panel) is a great innovation for the desktop PC

From a business perspective, buisnesses' can use the start screen to pin only their business apps on it. Simples. The immersive programs may not be necessary for them, in that case they don't have to use them. It's not exactly hard to see how it fits in.

The immersive UI might be good for terminal type applications at certain businesses, actually.

Useless and non-productive? Crap? A clear demonstration that you have no understanding of what metro is and how it will work with supported apps.

Nobody is saying that all business apps are suitable for metro. There are alot that aren't... photo editing, app or web development to name just a couple. But that's why the desktop is instantly just a keystroke away.

Email, web browsing, even office apps like word/excel (you know, what the majority of business office users run on a daily basis) can all run perfectly well in metro, and they'll all have easy data sharing between each other, unified search interface and live tiles on your home screen with live data available at your fingertips. Yeah, all just utter crap for sure. wacko.gif

Yeah I was imagining similar uses... like terminals on a shop floor that display orders for picking, all touch driven...

I predict Metro will be very popular, just look how well it's earlier rendition fared.

For desktops Metro is a terrible UI. Seems like they're trying really hard to push Windows Phone.

Not even those of us that like Immersive are saying it should be the default on traditional desktops - all we want is the option.

The reality is, there hasn't been a genuine fleshed-out alternative from Microsoft to the Start menu since Windows 95 was in testing for desktops. The closest thing - Windows Media Center - was pushed into a niche and basically left there.

Every option from third parties to the Start menu - and that includes those from Stardock - looks and feels like what it is: a kludge.

If you like the Start menu, that's fine. As has been said (including by me in this thread), user preference is subjective and individual. Why deny it to everyone just because it doesn't meet with your individual approval?

Immersive looks extremely nice for tablets and other touch devices. But it also looks like a disaster when using a mouse and keyboard. So it's a no for me.

Great that metro/immersive interface isn't being forced on anybody then biggrin.gif Win+D

The start screen is great as a landing page with all your feeds on it, and its great for launching apps of both types, metro and desktop. Windows key, type a few letters of the app name, hit enter. Done.

Metro is **** and is for phones and tablets not a desktop os. They are going to destroy desktop usability for the sake of consistency between devices, Microsoft are ridiculous they go from one extreme to the other, Windows 8 is going to flop.

agree, Metro is a pathetic UI and forcing it on desktop is only a pathetic attempt to save their faillure of mobile OS.

  1. Microsoft will release the worst OS ever in 2012, and will mark large exodus from windows market.

correction

Instead of just name calling and branding it pathetic (or crap as others have said), which in itself is pathetic without any explanation, why don't you actually try and define why you don't like it. Those of us that do like it have already laid out why we like it, so over to you. Lets see if we can't rebut a few of these "reasons" and see if they are actually valid reasons, or if they are purely down to a lack of understanding or a fear of change (as I suspect).

Also for the record, to say it's going to tank worse than ME based purely on a few days of an extremely early preview snippet is just immature.

Hadn't really noticed, but now you mention it.... smile.gif I want them to hurry up and give me the ability to change that background so I can get rid of that green... not quite sure who chose that colour but it's hideous smile.gifpreview-1-1134.gif
Actually, you can replace the entire StartScreen background with a picture of your choice in JPEG format - ideally, it should be the same resolution as your desktop, since that's the resolution the StartScreen uses.post-34404-0-00169300-1327432382_thumb.j

I do not understand this content switch between desktop -> Metro and back to Desktop for simple tasks. They do just not fit together. Makes sense for Smartphone cause smartphone does not have desktop so only way to communicate with End User is Metro, fine. For PC Desktops and Laptops what are they thinking? They are trying to compete Android and iOS at the same time ultimately killing Marketshare on Desktop front. MS made some terrible decisions in the past decade.

That's what I've been trying to say for a while now, the workflow is dumb for a desktop user, but everyone uses the standard "you dont like change!!!!!!!!!" excuse to shoot me down, its great for a tablet, but for a desktop it just doesn't fit in a fluid workflow without breaks

Whoever gives you 'you don't like change' excuse really has no brains and probably have no idea about Programming or anything let alone Designing. All they can do is to repeat **** served by Microsoft or anyone else. It is one of those things just because someone said it is good it must be good. It is ridicilous. It seems that Bill Gates left MS on time :) . Sadly all i hear is about Metro, UI, Taskbar which displays a bit more information realy minor crap. MS hasn't demostrated a single feature which would make Business or Consumer switch from Windows XP or Windows 7 to it. Unfortunatelly, i can not find anything. What's the selling point for Windows 8? I have no idea.

Because you are, in fact, implying Windows 7 is perfect for the desktop niche, and thus should never move out of it.

No, you're making baseless accusations and putting words in people's mouths.

Using your "logic"; It could be said you're implying that Windows 8 is perfect, has no flaws, and anyone that disagrees should be put to death.

How about

Faster boot times (people are reporting boot times of under 5sec)

New Copy, Cut, Paste (which looks really nice)

New task manager

New explorer with ribbon

More secure boot with UEFI

The list goes on and on, you just refuse to see past the start screen that you don't like

That is not what I am implying, and you know it.

If anything, I am implying that desktop UI choice - which hasn't been the case in Windows - ever - is a good thing.

I didn't say - in fact, I have never said - that Immersive is ideal - or even for everyone.

Let users decide.

What workflow? How many times do you really need to go to the start menu?

If there are apps you open frequently enough for this to bother you, you can pin them on the taskbar. The rare times you need to go to the Start screen its not really a big deal. Plus, it is a friendlier experience than the Start menu, and friendlier start up environment, so is great for novice users.

I don't accuse anyone of being afraid of change, I just think people are making a big deal over nothing and inventing a problem where it doesn't exist. I've been using the W8 developer release for a long time. My workflow hasn't suffered.

Nope, sorry. That is exactly what you are implying.

If you're going to tell other people they're implying things they've not said, then the same applies in this case. I get to tell you you're implying something you've never said.

So tell me, then - why do you object to merely having the option - Microsoft's words - of Immersive?

Why is the very idea of UI choice so objectionable?

None of that is reason for Business to move to it.

What tool did you do this with? Or how did you do it?

None of that is reason for Business to move to it.

Say's you. You've made your own personal opinions quite clear here and in other threads. How about you let other people exercise their own free will and decide for themselves. Ok?

BTW, why was this topic resurrected after 3 months of being dead? (my last post was in September).

Someone different resurrected the thread 9weith a different title).

And while some folks actually have an open mind (despite not being in favor of Immersive), there are still some that utterly dislike ANY change in the Windows UI and want it either dead OR confined to a niche (as previous attempts have been).

This topic is now closed to further replies.
