S.MULLA
So they limit P2P, so say I've got 2 servers with no torrents run at all, then nothing is limited? Christ, this actually sounds like a great deal for once. yep thats right. They throttle ONLY torrent traffic. Gone are the day of fair usage from BT. Any other P2P is unthrottled. So far I've used around 250gb this month- not a single word from BT.

Yep, they limit p2p to give maximum bandwidth for HTTP during peak hours, thats the only thing they mention

S.MULLA
Wireless G is 54meg though, so the 20-30meg we are getting over wifi has a problem I have the same speeds when testing on my wifi macbook and iphone (via speedtest.net) wont get any higher than 25mb (upload is fine though-8.6mb). Wifi has a high overhead- and your probably never gonna get 54mbps. This is the reason why BT are now selling N usb dongles on their website ! n_K
OK so I've enquired and I think I'll ditch NTL as soon as this contract is over, I think it was over last year but they never mentioned anything. Anyhoo, I need to get my own router, would a normal ethernet switch do or do I need a router with cable co-ax or a DSL router or what to use it? what
Great... So BT, how about finally upgrading our area?

They provide the Openreach modem which plugs into any router you like via WAN Ethernet port, they give you a Home Hub 3.0 but its crap
n_K
I've decided to go with the 5 static IPs instead of the home hub :p I don't need or use wireless here Edit: So if you choose to provide your own 'router/modem', what input will I be needing, I've got a coax modem from virgin atm. DSL? Cable coax? Ethernet?

n_K
Nice, I didn't realise there was the choice of statics BT don't really have a very organised terms site if I'm honest, the 3rd document down (which is a bit of a mess) states you can opt for 5 static IPs instead of a 'home hub' at no extra cost, but ?5/month extra if you want both. Or ?15 or so per month if you want 13 static IPs... Random number :p

A home user can register as business (make one up if you dont have one) I registered under my domain name and voila. 13 ips since 3 are used for gateway, ip range reserve and next range reserve. I currently have the 5 static ips for extra ?5/month.

You have to use a Openreach modem which is VDSL. This is a dumb modem- nothing fancy. you can then conenct this to the crappy BT home hub or any firewall /router which has ethernet for wan. I use a Cisco ASA 5505 and works brill with the static ip's. I think Draytech make a VDSL modem/router all in one (around ?120) which can replace the openreach modem and home hub. +BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted April 12, 2012 Subscriber¹ Share Posted April 12, 2012 Whats strange is that it tells me it is not available in my area (Infinity) and I can have between 4Mb and 8Mb with 2Mb estimated (sic?) yet if I put my downstairs neighbours phone number into the system it tells me that Infinity is available and he can have upto 33.6Mb We are both in the same property so how is that possible? Try this https://www.btwholes.../adsl/main.html I know if you can't get up to a certain speed, they can't give you Infinity, and offer something called Faster BB or something, I think it is upto 24meg ADSL
n_K
The openreach modem? Humm now I'm confused, on the phone she said about supplying my own modem, so now I'm unsure if she meant an 'openreach' device or the home hub. Not sure if this will come with the openreach thing or not now haha. 'I currently have the 5 static ips for extra ?5/month.' On virgin I've got 5 static IPs, well no, they're 'fixed IPs' (and they're ****). Are these REAL static IPs and I actually have 5 I can assign to anything? Do I need to use DHCP or put in the static IP details? With NTL I had to register each PC on some rubbish 'acorn' NTL service to get the proper fixed IPs of 6x.xxx.xxx.xxx instead of 8x.xxx.xxx.xxx :s

Its not as if the cable has to go miles further down the road

Yea they are pretty unclear sometimes, I would say you will get the Openreach modem as part of the package, at a guess I'd say for business lines you will not get a 'home' hub, ? Not sure, just a guess because of the name ROFL, just tried there and that gives the exact same information as the BT Infinity site, as I say something is definitely screwy with this :) How can a property split into upstairs flat (me) and downstairs flat (Neighbour) have completely different estimates? I know on the BT forums a few people were getting some weird results once the upgrade went live, its probably just a glitch on their site, some people were told they were not even on Infinity anymore when they blatantly were ! Salem874
I'd be happy If i can any Infinity at all!! Our exchange was due to get 21CN (ADSL2+) in 2010. It's now 2012, and that has disappeared. If we cant even get that I wont expect to get Infinity. BT, please prove me wrong!

Neighbour has his line through BT but no internet as he has no need for it, my line is through VM hence me using the postcode search. I would have thought the postcode search just checks the local exchange and then obviously tells you what is available in that exchange. I just find it strange that the information is wildly different when we are both in the same building :) Im on the first floor he's on the ground floor, plus it says mine is 4-8Mb with an estimate of 2Mb obviously 2Mb is lower than the lower speed given :)
