Windows 8 in-app advertisements get their own preview

Microsoft's own advertising blog (yes, it exists) has revealed how its going to frame ads inside incoming Metro-themed apps. While announcing partnerships with six different ad design teams, Microsoft threw up an example, above, that ties together a Seattle Sounders FC app with a panel showing off a pair of Adidas' latest Predator cleats. The adis located at the far edge of the apparently scroll-able app and clicking / tapping on the side will launch into a dedicated page, with a back button visibly ready to swing you back. While it looks relatively unobtrusive at the moment, the background of the app will also be up for advertising grabs, able to integrate videos, text and other media. Let's hope it doesn't ruin those delicate Metro lines when Windows 8 finally arrives.

And here come the people to defend it, saying Win8 it's the best thing since Beer. In 3...2..1

There is nothing to defend or attack here. This is by nature of having an app store with free apps available. Companies can choose to release the apps as ad supported, or they can make you pay for them, or both if they're greedy enough.

This is just like on all smartphones where there is a system available to put ads into your apps.

Windows 8 will not be popping up ads, or putting ads into apps that people wrote without them. Only apps that use them to effectively pay for themselves, rather than having you pay for them upfront.

not a fanboy, i hate Metro like most of people like you, but even i can see that like every app store, Windows 8 will have free ad supported apps too. Apple store have them, Android marketplace have them, and if some developers implant same thing in Metro apps, its MS fault. Yeah right. The title and OP's post sounds more like a flame bait.

Only the iOS App store, not the OS X app store. iAd at least is an iOS-only thing at this point.

You knew it was coming. It all starts with having to sign into MS to access the OS, then they can start tracking you and shoving marketing adds down our throats from who knows what 3rd party software that probably embedded into the code. This OS is the lease anticipated ever. Really seems to me there are some potential lawsuits awaiting with W8 and possible infringement of a persons privacy and security. Yea I'm being way over the top here but advertisement on Metro puts up the red flags.

It's less common on desktop platforms, but there are ad-supported apps in the Mac OS App Store too.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure whether there were any restrictions against ads in the Mac App Store. At least there doesn't appear to be an advertising SDK.

Using a Microsoft account is not mandatory. You can create a local one. Advertising in applications is nothing new, just look at Android, iOS and even many desktop applications. If a company, or person, intends to release an application for free, they tend to try to monetize it somehow indirectly. Common avenues for this are either to make it ad supported or to include other applications in the install.
