I don't understand why people don't like metro. It's clean, fast, scalable and future proof. Amazing how people don't consider upgrading simply because they replaced a start button with a start screen that is better in every way and added capability for apps and added more touch support. Windows 8 is nicer and a lot faster than windows 7 in the desktop environment as well.

Also I find it funny that a few of the people who dislike Metro say they have a MacBook Pro Retina and not just a 2012 MacBook. Got to show off that totally pointless nothing special feature. It's just another $2000 laptop but with OSX on it.

As I've said it other posts, it looks like what Fisher Price would come up with if they made a UI for autistic kids. It's just one of the ugliest UI's I've ever seen. I've seen nicer Windowblinds themes.

That's why it's important to have alternatives ;) Personaly, I hate Windows 8 because of the Metro part. If you're happy with it and fed up of Mac OS X, go for it and enjoy! :p

Yeah, I'll just hook up my iPad to my iMac to have that same effect. :p

Many Apple users complained about OS X when it was first released, so I have no doubt that if it had been Apple that introduced Metro that there would have been some resistance. The key difference is that Apple typically focuses on usability above all else and Windows 8 is fundamentally lacking in that department; that and the development would have been more secretive so there wouldn't have been as chance for people to moan about it pre-release.

PS - I'm not a great fan of Apple products but they usually have excellent usability and build quality.

I'm a Windows and an OS X user. I built my own killer desktop and it is fitted with some of the highest end parts available, those of you who saw my build log here can attest to that. I'm well invested in to the Windows ecosystem as a result. But I also have a 2009 17" MacBook Pro running exclusively Mac OS X Lion.

So with that out of the way I would say I'm impartial. I've got good machines for both OS's and I'm running the latest version of the operating systems on both. I use both of them completely equally during my average day. And you know I don't like Metro. I don't like the way it looks, I don't like the way it reacts to my chosen input methods (Keyboard + Mouse). I don't like the software that runs in Metro it feels like baby software. The only way I can really describe it is if the Windows Desktop Environment was The Internet then what Metro is would be WAP that crummy mobile Internet that everyone loathed before phones became powerful enough to render full web pages.

Metro feels like a tablet environment. And just like how I do not want iPad or iPhone apps on my desktop computer I do not want Metro apps on my Desktop Computer. I don't want every app I run full screen. I want to be able to run many apps at once, side by side. And it is for this reason I do not like Metro. Now before people quote me saying "then don't use metro, just use the desktop!" that isn't what this thread is about. This isn't a Windows 8 thread, this is a Metro thread and I'm explaining why I don't like Metro not why I don't like Windows 8.

So to reiterate, it doesn't matter to me who comes up with it, I don't like it for what it is.

I don't hate Metro.

It's great on my ExoPC Tablet.. I love it..

My opinion differs when it comes to my desktop or laptop however.. I like the option, but without a touchscreen, I find it far more cumbersome than the Start Menu.. All the information is there, but rather it taking up a small part of my screen, where I can still see what's happening on the rest of it, not to access a program I need to hide everything else under the Metro Startscreen... OR Pin all my programs to the task bar.. neither of which is ideal in the least..

If the start menu was still there, as it exists in 7, as an option, then I think Metro would be a hit. But Forcing it's use in situations that don't call for it, I'm just not that keen on. As it stands now, I probably won't install Windows 8 on any of my computers, apart from my Tablet(s).

I don't understand why people don't like pineapples. It's sweet, juicy, refreshing and tasty. Amazing how people don't consider eating pineapples simply because they prefer blueberries. Pineapples are sweeter and a lot tastier than blueberries in desserts as well.

I prefer more sweet and juicy fruits in desserts. Pineapples are more sweet than blueberries and goes well with my favorite pineapple desserts so it's an easy decision for me.

Also I find it funny that a few of the people who dislike pineapples say they prefer blueberries with whipped cream not just blueberries. Got to show off that totally pointless nothing special topping. It's just another way to eat blueberries

I guess you feel idiot now :p Do I really have to explain why tastes are something personal? Yeah.. in life, sometimes, there's people with different tastes than yours.. it's normal... it's not dangerous... you don't have to feel bad about this.

Depends on what we're talking about here because I love Metro for WP7/8 and tablets. I'm just not fond of using it for the desktop because to me, it still doesn't feel like it makes sense...

That said, the outcry would be smaller if Apple made it simply because Apple has a much smaller user base than Windows does. Thus, every single Apple user could hate Metro, but it would pale in comparison to Microsoft doing it. This is why so many people are upset and why the outcry is heard from all over in regards to the feelings of Windows 8.

Really, I don't think it matters who made it at all. Whatever controversial feature comes out, we'll always have the people on the other side of the fence laughing. Apparently, we're all a bunch of immature kids who fight and bicker over who's daddy is better. So much for growing up though I guess.

Universally praised? Lots of people HATE the look of of xbox with Metro. Just go on other gaming forums and you'll see constant complaints about what a mess it is and how hard it is to navigate. Not to mention how ugly it is. WP7 and Zune have such an insignificant market share that yeah, most of their users seem to love it. But I'd say you're not going to buy WP7 if you don't like Metro. Sales numbers say that's not a lot of people.

So yeah, maybe universally loved on Neowin, but it's a bunch of Metro fanboys here. If you go to other sites, even non tech related ones, you'll see most people hate it and think Win8 is going to bomb big time.

Yes, despite your apparent lack of distaste for it, the metro UI on WP, ZuneHD and Xbox is universally praised in reviews and user satisfaction. Market share is a different story and probably same as OSX where the UI is universally praised but it has insignificant market share.

Gaming forums are useless for any kind of real feedback.

if Apple Made Metro, it would have been liked more, because they would have "Finally cracked it". It would have also been a very well designed UI that would have produced an eyegasm!

in the reference to Metro and not their slate tablet, I think this video says it best.

Metro actually flies right in the face of that video. It is as original as it gets in terms UI design from Microsoft.

If Apple had made Metro, everybody would be like "WHAT? WE'VE HAD THE SAME INTERFACE FOR 7 YEARS, WHY IS IT CHANGING NOW?"

Heh. I have no problem with Metro, as a mobile device OS. My only problem with it is trying to force it into a desktop environment, where it just does not belong and does not help with a power user/productive workflow.

    • But you still need RAM and a GPU. If you haven`t any spare that`s going to cost quite a bit...
    • Thank you for the feedback! I updated the image
    • Hmm wonder if I can share/resell the 'physical' edition like I can now.

    • JBL BAR 800 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar is an amazing deal today by Sayan Sen This Amazon Prime Day 2026 sales so far we have had a couple of nice deals related to sound and audio. First we have the Sennheiser HD 600 at its lowest ever price of just $225. Next we also have the Beats Studio Pro at its lowest price ever at just $150. However perhaps you prefer your gear to sound great on a larger scale, like throughout the room. In that case an all-in-one soundbar system can help and currently JBL's BAR 800 is a great deal for sure as it's up for grabs at just $600 (purchase link under the specs table down below). One thing that should be appreciated a lot about these JBL soundbars is their spec sheet and the frequency response data it provides. The firm is honest about it as JBL confirms the subwoofer is able to go down to 35 Hz at -6dB or F6. This means it should be covering 40Hz and up very well, where most of the bass lies. You miss out on a lot of sub-bass but that is to be expected given the price point and the subwoofer driver size. Speaking of which, it is a 10-inch driver and promises a max output power of 300 watts at 1% THD (total harmonic distortion). JBL also claims the system will provide you with a "True Dolby Atmos" experience. The surround speakers are wireless and battery-powered which means setting them up should be really convenient. The technical specs of the JBL BAR 800 are given in the table below: Specification Value Channel Configuration 5.1.2-channel soundbar system Dolby Atmos Yes, with 2 up-firing drivers Total System Power Output 720 W Soundbar Power Output 340 W Surround Speaker Power Output 2 × 40 W Subwoofer Power Output 300 W Soundbar Drivers 3 × 46×90 mm racetrack drivers, 3 × 20 mm tweeters, 2 × 70 mm up-firing full-range drivers Surround Speaker Drivers 1 × 46×90 mm racetrack driver (each speaker) Subwoofer Driver 10-inch (260 mm) wireless subwoofer Frequency Response 35 Hz – 20 kHz (-6 dB) Audio Inputs Optical, Bluetooth, Chromecast built-in, AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music (MRM), USB* HDMI Inputs 1 HDMI video input HDMI Output 1 HDMI eARC output HDCP Version 2.3 HDR Pass-Through HDR10, Dolby Vision Bluetooth Version 5.0 Wi-Fi Version 6, 6E Streaming Services Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay, Alexa MRM Get it at the link below: JBL Bar 800-5.1.2-Channel Dolby Atmos soundbar with Detachable Surround Speakers (Black): $599.85 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US with Prime) Prime subscription can be cancelled within three business days.
