What's this I'm hearing? Windows 8 RTM will still spot the same Windows Vista/7 mishmash system icon set? :|

That definitely would never have happened if was an Apple product.

It wouldn't have happened if people didn't whine and whine and whine about change. If it was better received, they would have invested in more changes to the desktop. As it is, you're complaining that too much has changed and in the same breath saying that too little has changed.

Do you think the love/hate situation would have been reversed?

I.e., do you think the Metro haters, Apple fanboys and pro-Apple bloggers would have given it a better chance than they are doing now?

Would Apple had been given the benefit of the doubt by assuming that they have something great lined up, that will create a market where none existed, as with the iPad?

Especially if they had demoed the Surface a little while after demoing Metro?

Well, not from me, as I ignore apple products.

If Metro was an Apple UI that launched with the iPad, people would have ****ed themselves like an excited dog (Not that they didn't already). The tech press would have been praising it left and right, and I'm pretty sure people would have been throwing their babies at Jobs.

But since it's Microsoft, and it's cool to hate Microsoft, the tech press could care less, and people are annoyed that Microsoft didn't roll over and die like many wanted them to, to make way for Android/ChromeOS devices/desktops. Hating Metro is nothing more than, "Oh great, Microsoft's back, well.... shoot."

Yeah because Metro actually makes sense on a tablet. Apple would have received equally as much crap if they plastered a half-assed version all over OS X too like Microsoft did with Windows 8. Something you completely fail to realize is Apple received many complaints about OS X' early Aqua as well. Instead of ignoring said complaints and pretend everyone was in love with the appearance they actually listened and made major adjustments.

So has MS. Many of the changes in the Release Preview have been due to customer feedback. While I agree, that Metro isn't as developed as it should be in Windows 8, I do think there are spot where Microsoft got it right.

For a company the size of Microsoft, with their resources I'm finding it unbelievable this is the best they could come up with. There's literally zero polish to be detected in either Metro or the desktop. It's like they put together a presentation mock-up saying "Well, this is the general idea we have" and pretty much stopped there.

Regardless whether you love or hate Aqua; the level of attention to detail and care Apple's designers put in almost each OS X Mountain Lion interface element and icon puts the Windows design team to shame really. No, it's not perfect - nothing is - but they sure try to come close.

*GASSSPPP* HOLYYYYY HELLLLLL...

Sorry for my crazy reaction... but ignoring products you don't use? That's not heard of around these parts, good sir! Around here, we bitch about anything that we don't use. I think you need to change that awesome attitude of your's around!

(just kidding, I really wish more people acted like you. I really really do.)

    • No. Windows 8 had little to no spywhare, is actually faster than 7 but it has the dreaded start screen, nothing that you could not fix with start8. Windows ME crashed often, but was shotlived and replaced by XP, which is a much better windows in itself.
    • Windows 8 was uninspiring but it was fine / worked. It was just overshadowed by how great Windows 7 was. Windows ME seem to be just unstable for most people - I was using Windows 2000, which was far superior. The two best versions are Windows 7 and 2000
    • I don't think ME was that bad. The stability issues were mostly caused by drivers. This was when the switch from vxd to wdm was happening. The other complaint was not being able to shut down into DOS anymore which was silly with XP right around the corner.
    • As much as I hated Windows 8, although I never used it personally on any of my own machines, I think Windows Me was hands down the worst OS from MS. I have Windows 11 on 2 unsupported machines and haven't had any issues and I actually kind of like it. Still hate how slow Windows updates are though.
    • Why do you think they whol industry would be done? Agree a lot has shifted around the launch with devs moving their dates to avoid the timeframe around the launch. But if this fails, it'll be talked about, analysed, Rockstar will likely be ridiculed but people will move on. Others devs might be more cautious about these large games but I don't think one game will change the entire industry
