The WinRT API is so young, I don't see Mucrosoft waiting a year to update it. And perhaps they will continue tweaking the desktop UI in a future large scale update.

I played around with some apps new to RTM and the amount of polish on the Microsoft games is ridiculously good. It's the best version of Solitaire and Minesweeper I've ever played. I really do hope they are holding back a number of apps for official launch to make sure it starts with a bang.

You can keyboard-assist the launch as well - WinKey+C launches the Charm Bar, then click the middle icon to launch the StartScreen (utterly consistent with the Previews).

Because everyone knows all the keyboard shortcuts, right? /s

That's everyone's answer when people ask about that stuff, but the VAST majority of people I work with couldn't tell you how to copy and paste or "select all", etc..

Windows 8 isn't the start of any complete re-write of Windows.... Windows 8 is probably 98% based on Windows 7 code.... dunno where you got that bad info from..

So start menu is just part of that 2%? :p For some here, that is like 93.5% of what's wrong with Windows 8.

When Vista was about to release, lots of people are curious about it. Vista was a mess with drivers compatibility and hardware upgrade. Not many people liked vista, moved back to XP.

Likewise it might be the same case here with Win 8 and Win 7.

works fine for me, I'm not really bothered about the missing start button you can just move your mouse to the bottm left hand corner and you will see a square one instead, left click it and you will see some options such as the cmd and control panel. Of course since the RTM is activated the watermark is a bit annoying and you can't cutomize it but when you have 2 laptops and one is running the consumer preview you can just customize it from there.

I would like to point out that my battery life is much better somehow

Been using W8 since Build in Sept (CP & RP too) as my main OS at home (desktop with kb/m), love it too.

I find I'm using Metro apps more for things that I normally would have gone to a website for, such as tweeting, facebook, email, podcasts, calendar, etc. Also, I kind of am getting to like Metro IE more than the desktop version for many scenarios, such as browsing sites like Neowin and posting in the forum, or watching Hulu and YouTube.

I couldn't imagine actually using a Photoshop or Visual Studio Metro app, and therefore will always need a well functioning desktop environment, but the Metro apps do have a place.

I would have thought Ribbons on Explorer would be the most controversial, it was with me until I saw it could not only be hidden, but that you could pin any option to the window's Title Bar. New Folder, Copy Path, Command Prompt, and Show Hidden Items, all just a click on a (mostly) persistent button group, it's awesome. I also like the colorless window areas on Explorer in the RTM, instead of the light blue on previous versions.

Before Windows 7, Windows 2000 was my favorite Windows release (not that I didn't upgrade to XP and Vista when they released). Now it is definitely Windows 8, it's Windows 7++.

One thing I don't like about Windows 8 is that all the media files, even in RTM, are defaulted to open with Metro apps. I still use WMP, MPC-HC, and Picasa on the desktop for music, video, and images, and don't really like any of the Metro apps for local media. It takes a little more effort than it should, and than it does in previous Windows versions, to set a desktop app as the default app for media files. It's no biggie though, and eventually after enough clicking of "Open With...", it's remedied.
