Trouble installing Windows 8 RTM

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to install RTM on my desktop and I'm running into graphical issues.

During the install there were graphical glitches.

I managed to work my way through the install however when the machine rebooted neither of my displays are switching on.

My hardware specs are:

Mobo: Asus M2N32 SLI Deluxe with 4 gig ram

Graphics Card: Nvidia 7600 GT

I'm not quite sure how to go about getting the display working.

I doubt it's a hardware problem as I had Win 7 running with no problems about 30 minutes before I tried to install Win 8.

I could probably get into the advanced options but the screen corruption happens during setup making reading anything quite difficult.

Long shot, but is your BIOS updated to the latest version ?

Is that GPU onboard or a separate card ? If separate, do you have onboard you could use until you get into windows ?

I'd say try to wing it through the setup by feeling your way around, hopefully once it's installed it'll decide to work right (Or you can go update the drivers)

Not easy with no displays at all unless you have another machine with a display to clone keyboard commands with.

I did wing it through the setup, I have it installed. Problem is when I try and start it, either normally or in safe mode the displays don't work so I can't get in to install the drivers.

You say 'Neither of your displays' are switching on

Have you tried unplugging all but one / trying each one in a different GPU port ?

My 8 install sent the display over to the HDMI port (TV) after a reboot, my main LCD (DVI) was set as the extended display, I had to finish install on the TV

Yeah, I have dual monitors. I'll try booting with only one in and see if that works.

If it doesn't, try reinstalling 8 with only 1 monitor plugged in, it could be that it has bugged out and sent the combined resolution to each display, or refresh rate is messed up etc

Like +Detection says, I believe you need to unplug your secondary monitor. A lot of folks with 2 monitors have had this problem initially. Once booted with only your primary monitor, you should be able to plug the secondary back in and not have that problem again. Looking forward to hearing if this fixes the problem.

Tim

Tried installing with only one monitor in. Exactly the same as having two in. Graphic glitches during install and after the first reboot the screen goes blank after the windows symbol shows on the screen.

Are you running the monitors through HDMI? If you are, try going old school instead and use VGA. Not sure what else to try. I haven't had a 7600 so I don't know the specs or even if it has a VGA slot on it.

8 must be installing a driver that your card doesn't like, can't really think of a way around it unless you can make a custom 8 install disk with the new nVidia drivers in it, or get to the desktop and install the new drivers without using the monitor

No hdmi, my card only has two dvi ports.

I can't even use onboard graphics as my mobo doesn't have any.

Can you RDC in to the machine or try a different video card?

Are there any tools to automate the install for the video drivers?

Don't have another video card. I haven't been able to get in to set up windows so I won't be able to RDC into the machine.

Is it even possible to create a custom disk?

With 7 yes, not sure if the program will work for 8, worth a shot I suppose

Had a little Google, seems like Microsoft made a mistake with the RTM which affects some nVidia cards, guess I have one of those cards.

As my mobo doesn't have onboard graphics I've guess I'm out of luck for getting this installed.

    • I just started using Teams (and “New” Oiutlook) at work (instead of Slack) and both are truly abysmal pieces of software.
    • If you are willing to go to approx $200, then as mentioned in your other thread I think a refurbished Pixel 8 will be a great deal that will last you for years. I recently recommended that to someone at work, he was on a strict £200 budget, which got him an excellent conditioned refurbished Pixel 8 here. He's since told me its the best phone he's ever had and feels its a massive upgrade over his old Samsung A series device. I don't know the sites which deal in refurbished devices in the US, however I’m sure you will have some options like we do here. Failing that Ebay is also quite good in my experience. If you wanted something a bit cheaper, then you could maybe go for an older Pixel 7, these will still get security updates until the end of 2027. Even after that you have good third party OS support from LineageOS. It doesn't have to be a Pixel though, you can buy many older devices for a good deal that would be better than a new $100 phone and flash LineageOS to them: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/
    • I don't use one drive, but then I don't use any cloud storage, not even Icloud on my mac. If I did use cloud storage, then I would not use One drive, not because there is anything wrong with it, but because I can use Icloud. The only reason I see to use one drive is if your job requires you to have access to it
    • Not built in, which is not a bad thing. There are ways of adding cloud storage to it, Dropbox is the most well know that also have a client for Linux, but there are others.
