A final good bye to Windows

Recommended Posts

Linux is a neverending problem of things breaking. Good luck because you will need it.

What things are you talking about? I myself have never had any issues with Linux, but have had more than my share of BSOD from Windows to include Windows 8.

Just remember the same could be said true about Windows.

I have since about 1995 ran at least one machine that Dual Booted both Windows and some variant of Linux/BSD.

Oh and something to note -- Have always had sound and flawless video as well as all devices working out of the box except for one wireless that I had to attach to a wired connection for it to get.

I understand.

I haven't read to many of his prior posts, but I was just trying to help.

Understood, but stating that someone has a crass attitude after being snippy with them, especially in this case doesn't help anyone. :)

This is very much a walking on egg shells scenario. Slow and steady while being polite is the best way to handle the OP. :)

I wanna toss this out - ...if he's burning his installs to disk, maybe the ISO is corrupted, or the disk he burned is messed up. It could be installing the OS but with errors that don't seem to arise until after the fact.

I've run into this with Vista and Home Server.

I'm sorry? Who was I "snippy" with?

However frustrated you are, try this. After all, what do you have to lose?

1. Set your BIOS to "BIOS Defaults", rather than "Performance Defaults".

2. Wipe your primary HDD.

3. Install Windows.

4. Do NOT install ANY third party software whatever.

5. Go to the Device Manager and check your ethernet adapter to see if it is functional.

6. If it is, enable automatic updates.

7. If it isn't, install the driver that came with your system, or go to another PC and download it from the manufacturer's site.

8. Once you have Internet access, restart your computer.

9. Leave the computer running like this for about 2 days (or about as long as you previously did until it started giving errors).

If after this period, you do not run into problems, install your other software one by one, with some normal usage between each install. This will help you pinpoint the cause of your problems.

This is all I can do to help, without being there.

I guess you were born with all your IT knowledge.

What a crass attitude.

Master in Computer Sciences. . .will that do it for you. . . :)

Besides I got into Computer Sciences back in 1972 (26 years old)

Have a nice day, and be careful what you say. :D

A Master in CompSci doesn't make you anything.

Dime a dozen, as it were.

Got one myself. 1988.

Ciao.

Sounds like you simply ran into third party software or drivers issues in Windows which your Linux OS is not having issues with because either there are no drivers for the hardware or you simply cannot run the same software in Linux you use in Windows. I feel your frustration, but every OS has it's pros and cons and dynamics.

Good luck

I've had various versions of Ubuntu on my work laptop for 2 years now. Sleep rarely works, regression in docking/undocking and multiple workspaces, their new UI has turned god awful slow and gets worse as time goes by. I get hard lockups multiple times a week to where I have to hard reset. Updating becomes a pain in the ass when you start adding a bunch of 3rd party repositories. Compiz crashes all the time forcing me to relaunch if I notice it or I lose the window decorator. Those are the more common issues I experience almost every day.

I keep Arch Linux on a virtual machine and having the entire system break without being able to get to a GUI login after updating is extremely common.

Conversely, I've rarely had BSOD or any issues with Windows XP and Windows 7.

I have ran anywhere from RedHat Linux / Debian / FreeBSD / PC-BSD never had any issues you described

lately been too lazy and run Ubuntu without the new UI use classic gnome or LXDE.

Sleep for me on Windows on the other hand -- Locked up about 5 of my computers ranging from Win2k- Vista (however 7 is the first that it actually has worked)

Did you try replacing the PSU?

I kid!!!

Good luck with Fedora, may it give you in Linux what 8 could not give you in Windows.

A big high-5 to who ever can figure out where that reference comes from!!!

Triumph the insult comic dog..

I have been fixing/using/repairing/building machines for 18 years now. In that time, I have met some people that feel exactly the way you do. In each and every case its because something they thought they were doing correct was infact being done incorrectly. Let me state i am NOT a fan boy of ANY company, but I can tell you Windows 7 is as perfect as it gets at the moment. I could let my windows 7 run for months straight without shutting if off. For me, there has never been an issue other then a user-created issue.

I know you are done with windows, but if you do try it again, here is some advice i can give that will make night and day difference.

1) Start off with a clean install of Windows 7. NOT a factory recovery from Dell or HP or any manufacturer, straight from a Windows 7 Disc.

2) Before installing ANYTHING (as long as your network works) install and purchase Malwarebytes PRO. (lifetime license and ALL you will ever need for $25)

3) Install windows updates.

4) install any drivers windows did not auto-install

5) install ccleaner and defragler from www.ccleaner.com

6) Run CCleaner, and do a defrag.

That's it. What i described about will result in a good-forever install and will never let you down.

Linux distributions are horrible and ugly. gnome, kde, whatever, its hideous, with its round ugly fonts, bad color schemes, amateurish looking icons and window controls. the funniest part about using Linux was seeing all this "open source" software, which is software that tries to emulate and clone successful proprietary commercial software, but fails pretty hard. I remember trying to use some office alternative,i think open office. it was java based if I remember, and it took forever to load. it was software gone horribly wrong. Linux people were raving about it, but it was a complete joke. that's when I shut that crap off and burned the disc, like with fire.

everybody and their mother has a Linux distribution, with its own frameworks and libraries. its a big mess. I think these Linux people are oblivious to all this.

And they have a nerve to say anything about windows 8?

dont these guys remember when asus began selling the eeepc with Linux? everybody returned them, and the oems begged Microsoft to continue supporting xp so they can use it to sell their netbooks. Nobody wants anything to do with Linux.

And now these Linux people are excited because valve ported Left for dead to Linux, and they were going apreshit. Its a 3 year old game, LOL. that's Linux folks.

You obviously don't have very much experience actually "using" a good Linux desktop OS. I've been quite happy and quite productive for several years on Linux, and have never once had to worry about any kind of malware, viruses, blue screens of death, etc.. Hell I once left my personal server on running Debian for 6 months straight, no reboots, and it never had the first problem.

Oh well, to each their own, have fun with metro or aero or whatever the new thing is with kids these days, :p

Is the OP even still checking this thread?

Well, after all the insults, I doubt it.

This site's members are supposedly here to (among other things) offer support to other, less knowledgeable members, or those looking to solve a problem, but all too often, some of them come across as complete tools.

In all fairness, this whole thread was barely more than a troll. He asks no questions, invites no conversation. The whole OP was nothing more than him saying "I'm not stupid, but I can't make Windows work, therefore Windows must suck, so I'm leaving it forever to use Linux instead."

He came here looking to instigate. He instigated. If anyone insulted him, he wanted it.

Agreed, the OP is just trolling here.

Fair point.

After reading through all the replies, I have come to a conclusion that his AMD CPU should take all the blame.

AMD CPU here. Never had a problem.

Lucky you. I got AMD CPU this year and the system was behaving a bit funny. Cant explain, but random mouse stuttering, lag while opening windows. Not always but every 10-15 min or so. Maybe it was driver problem but whether its hardware or software, a problem is a problem. Ended up returning CPU and Motherboard and went Intel way. Now everything is working as it should.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • Windoze 11 could finally go to hell, instead of making me savor yet another error I've never had. "Bad Pool Caller" or whatever TF cryptic crap0la message it is. Adding salt to injury, it says something along these lines (on the blank black screen after it hard stops): "Your windoze needs to restart. You can restart." NO WAY SHERLOCK. The PEECEE, look, it's *blocked*, I can do jack sh1t with it as it is and you say that it needs to restart? Further, that I can restart? What am I supposed to do, take a herbal bath? Sudo a sandwich? Timewaster pile of useless slop and errors, coded by monkeys and force-fed on us by a pedo-founded corporation, that's all there is to it. Now, let's have a fun weekend trying to handle the error, which after a quick internet check can basically be due to EVERYTHING, from memory faults to drivers to motherboard issues. Thanks M$.
    • Zen Browser 1.21.3b by Razvan Serea Zen Browser is a privacy-focused, open-source web browser built on Mozilla Firefox, offering users a secure and customizable browsing experience. It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. Zen Browser offers features that improve user experience, privacy, and customization: Privacy-Focused: Blocks trackers and minimizes data collection. Automatic Updates: Keeps the browser updated with security patches. Zen Mods: Customizable themes and layouts. Workspaces: Organize tabs into different workspaces. Compact Mode: Maximizes screen space by minimizing UI elements. Zen Glance: Quick website previews. Split Views: View multiple tabs in the same window. Sidebar: Access bookmarks and tools quickly. Vertical Tabs: Manage tabs vertically. Container Tabs: Separate browsing sessions. Fast Profile Switcher: Switch between profiles easily. Tab Folders: Organize tabs into folders. Customizable UI: Personalize browser interface. Security Features: Inherits Firefox’s robust security. Fast Performance: Lightweight and optimized for speed. Zen Mods Customization: Deep customization with mods. Quick Access: Easy access to favorite websites. Open Source: Built on Mozilla Firefox with community collaboration. Community-Driven: Active development and feedback from users. GitHub Repository: Contribute and review the source code. Zen Browser 1.21.3b changelog: New Features Updated to Firefox 152.0.1 Fixes Fixed transparency not working after updating to 1.21.2b (#14259) Fixed frequent crashes affecting users with Intel Raptor Lake processors Fixed an issue on macOS where choosing a PDF option, such as "Save as PDF", from the system print dialog would send the job to your printer instead of saving a file. • Microsoft, why can't I just turn off Copilot on my MS account (in order to stop OneDrive from wanting to summarize everything, ahem) in a way that doesn't break OneNote instead?
