System Specs: I want to see this added to Neowin

Recommended Posts

I was over at Overclock.net and I saw this:

Here's a link to the original post where I snapped this pic: http://www.overclock...e#post_18619649

I noticed a lot of members have their system specs in their sig, and just thought this would be beneficial. It would also keep people from having lengthy sigs, or have something other than their specs in their sig. I saw a thread stating they want subscribers to have more features: members can list 2 Rigs, and subscribers can list up to five. (The different tabsare viewed one at a time or hidden by clicking the hide button at the bottom) There should also be a tab for devices (all members can use this feature)---list your mobile device/tablet/ect.

Web Devs: Is it possible to integrate this feature into Neowin? How do my fellow Neowinians feel about this? If you have questions, or need mockups, just tell me. :)

This is a great idea! Would love to see this implemented. It would ease a lot of frustration in the Hardware Hangout!

As a user with sigs turned off this would kinda drive me nuts.

Maybe we can have it show in profiles though?

Could it not be placed under or above the signature? So a slide down box, similar to what is shown in the image above?

I agree that this should be an option to appear in Profiles only. Too much to be displayed in a post though, in almost every post. I'd be annoyed.

I think it looks as if it would be hidden by default with a "show details" clickable

+1 It could be hidden by default in the sig and a clickable + sign to display it.

I've always considered Neowin to be a very customized forum, why conform to having such stale sigs? Dynamic clickable sigs!

It's collapsed...you have to expand it to see it...so it adds a couple pixels worth of width to the bottom of a post.

It would help with troubleshooting...if people use it.

I think that will be the problem. But hey, I'm all for it. Maybe it could be inside the popup box when you hover over a user's name, meaning that you wouldn't have to leave the thread to see the information while at the same time being hidden for when you didn't need it?

True, but it might annoy some people. Maybe have the ability to hide it with sigs like stated above?

Oh yeah. I was just addressing the thing about it being too much to see in every post. I think they meant seeing that whole list on every post. :)

If this, it could work as well.

Just slows the site down, might as well go to the profile then.

Also, not the biggest fan of splitting system info and help seeking posts.

A couple of years later on for example the issue cannot be fully inspected anymore as the new build config has taken over said required info about the troubles.

So for archival purposes this is bad.

It's also bad from a Google point of view.

When I hunt the internet for information, like lately I checked to see how to get a friend's graphics running in Ubuntu 10.04, the split up actually makes the post less relevant although it contains all the information for SOLVING the problem, just not all the information that I l used to find the solution.

Bad idea to split it up, so if anything, keep it a minimalistic thing on the profile page.

Maybe add an option to automatically implement the info (current as of writing) provided in the profile with a self-made BBCode kind of string.

This would have several advantages:

a) The info is easily appendable to your profile

b) all help posts remain searchable

c) system info would always be formatted the same in such posts, which I think many of us can agree would be a nice bonus over the specs being spread in full sentences all over

d) awesome factor!

I dont want to see sigs and i use as hell dont want to see some stupid box showing off your epenis. If you need to post specs, then just post them in your posting.

I dont want to see sigs and i use as hell dont want to see some stupid box showing off your epenis. If you need to post specs, then just post them in your posting.

Why? That takes too much time. Have it in your sig flash your epenis around! :)

I dont want to see sigs and i use as hell dont want to see some stupid box showing off your epenis. If you need to post specs, then just post them in your posting.

It has nothing to do with ePeen, but with troubleshooting.

I'm sure my ePeen would look so huge with my 6-year old Dell XPS410 with my 5-year old AMD Radeon HD3850 in my sig...WOOOOO

Don't be ridiculous. It isn't about showing off your 'epenis'. It's about making it easier for people to help each other. And to let others know what your specs are (which can come in handy for PC gaming threads). Assuming this feature is implemented, you wouldn't see it if you have signatures disabled. Ever hear the saying "out of sight, out of mind"?

Just a thought how about having a link/icon in the user info section of the post that makes a pop out like we do for viewing the replies of a thread you know to see how many and by who?

Also since you'll have the specs stored on the site you could also add a check box in the thread creation page that automatically puts the specs in the thread to save time typing or copy pasting them in.

^ We could do that too.

@ Timan-- Is this possible for you to do? Under Avatar > Edit profile you could have a section called "My Specs" where the user fills out the fields. It also appears on the user page (for someone viewing a profile) and in the side bar. The could also be a second drop down called "My Devices" that list your phone, tablet, etc. I really don't care where it's integrated, as long as it's integrated.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • The only reason I want to know where you from is because if you are not from the U.K, then why should you care what we in the U.K do or don't do? Racist I am not, I am fed up with the amount coming over here and feel they can come over here and think we need to support them. Do you know how much it costs this country to support these people coming over here? Even when we give them a place to live it is not good enough. We had a barge that was being used to house immigrants, oh but that was not good enough. A mate said to me at the time, when he was homeless, he would have been happy to live on the barge, instead of ending up sleeping on a bench on the beach. I am not scared to say what my family heritage is, unlike you who is scared to say where they are from or where they live. Father side U.S, mother side Wales, still have family living in the U.S. A mate who sadly died a few years ago, had a load of people from different races recording in his studio, I got on with all of them. Skin colour don't bother me, where they are from don't bother me. Religion don't bother me as long as they don't push it onto me and it is not crazy stuff. I am not religious. But if you are not living in the U.K, then why should you care if we are in the E.U or not? This the problem, too many people poking their noses into where it don't belong. But you believe what you believe, if you think I am racist, then be it, I really do not care. Just grow a pair
    • If he hasn't been able to figure that out, then why is he obsessed with tariffs? Because that's one of the most prominent tools to level the playing field when you have high cost of labor.
    • Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5102558, KB5095615 Setup and Recovery updates by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft released the newest preview update (C-release) under KB5095093. Alongside those, Microsoft also released new dynamic updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. This time both recovery and setup updates were released for Windows 11. The company writes: "KB5095186: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 26H1: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.28000.2335. KB5102558: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2. KB5095615: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.26100.8737." Microsoft notes that both the Recovery and Setup updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel.
    • The high cost of labor and operating within the US. Donald hasn't been able to figure that out--pathetic.
