Summoning someone to a thread

Recommended Posts

Okay, so here is an idea. You guys might know of this, but oh well

Sometimes, there are threads where we want to get input from someone but its not possible without messaging them privately about it. For example, if I create a thread about something in Gamer's Hangout and want Anaron' input in it, I would write

@Anaron

and it will show up in his/her notification center as

Muhammad Farrukh mentioned you in 'XYZ THREAD'

So he will know that his/her input is required there.

Is it possible/plausible?

Regards...

^^Yup, if neowin doesnt want to wait for 4.0 (im sure they will probably wait until 4.0.4+ or 4.1 even, to wait for stableness), there is actually a paid modification for the current IPB (which now neowin is on), that does exactly what OP is asking. Its called @Mentions. About $18 for the add-on. Fantastic feature I agree, should be default.

I can see that being abused.. I wouldn't want members summoning me to every problem posted here all the time :/

Yep, it could be abused. It would be an interesting feature to include though if we could put some sort of restrictions in place.

Not too sure about abused, I thought that was the whole idea of moderators to action punishment to anyone who is reported for abusing the system?

Holding off an idea because of a minority may do something is odd indeed.  Same as making the site with a forum, some people will abuse it, but you have moderators/admins to keep that under control

I would have thought anyway

I get what you're saying, but I think Neobond also was right, afterall, mods aren't online 24/7 and they can only act once they recieve a report or two.

But if a few users who have been (at the risk of using an unaccepatble word) 'butthurt' suddenly report something mods have no choice to let pass for some reason or other, then decide to contact admin, the admin are just going to get annoyed and frustrated, this eventually would lead to a drop in quality on the site as staff would just start thinking, 'what's the point?'

It's a nice idea, but a user needs advice on a certain item, or way of executing a certain task, I'd suggest contacting anyone with an MVC title, in a polite manner, or use the search to see if the problem has been answered in a previous thread. :)

In a perfect world, yeah.. but it's also the reason we never allowed negative rep votes. We turned it on and the amount of a minority immediately started abusing it, making it pointless. It's a perfect way to troll members you don't like by voting everything they post down, and the same would happen if you could "summon" someone to a thread.

It works well on Facebook, because you know, the people tagging your name are friends that you've actually allowed. Here that isn't the case.

Actually, thinking about that if summoning worked only with your "friends" it could work, you just remove whoever is abusing it from your friends list.

Hello,

Completely agree. And imagine the double or triple posting in a thread mentioned the same member over and over....it would be a mess!

That would be the only intresting method to do it.

Or have members personally have the ability to turn off being mentioned and notified.

    • WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
