For me it goes most of the way through the install to the "just doing a few more things" stage then the screen goes black and the circular loading animation just freezes. Sits like this until I reset then the system rolls itself back to 8 and puts up an error message saying Windows 8.1 could not be installed. Tried twice...can't get it to take the update.

Puts up a seemingly generic error code 0xC1900101 0x40019

Not sure exactly where the best log files would be to figure out what it's doing/not doing. Everything I've looked at so far seems fairly normal.

My installation failed and restored to 8.0. Now, I can't install again because the Windows Store gives me the 0x80070008 error. I'm pretty sure it relates to a "Boot" folder on the C drive that's still there, but I can't delete it because Windows is somehow using it.

I see a hidden "$Windows.~BT" folder on C:\ which appears to be the update files. Wondering if I should try to delete it and then re-download the whole thing from the store.

Tried to delete it and Windows Store started downloading again. So it may work after all.

If you're using a 3rd party antivirus and receiving the 0xC1900101 error try uninstalling it first. Check for an update version or use Defender until your vendor has an 8.1 update.

Install log is located at \Windows\WindowsUpdate.log if you want to check it to see what's failing specifically.

After installing Windows 8.1 today, my AMD control center does not work. I uninstalled everything (drivers, etc) in Add/Remove programs and then I ran driver sweeper in safe mode. My laptop has the AMD A8-4500M chipset

The update still isn't even showing in the store for me. I've made sure all other updates have been installed, opened/closed the store and run wsreset.exe. Don't know what else I can try but to wait.

And this is Windows 8 Pro I'm talking about, not enterprise. :(

I also do not have the update available yet, all I have available is the Windows 8.1 Preview.

Also on Windows 8 Pro.

Don't have any 3rd party stuff installed.

Only thing I really see in the logs is stuff like:

2013-10-17 12:47:15:880 952 f2c DnldMgr FATAL: DM:CBitsJob::SetCallbackHandler: SetNotifyInterface failed with 0x80010108

Seems to be, on google, related to Windows Live Photo Gallery...not sure how it applies here though.

For people who can't install Windows 8.1 and have Logitech or SteelSeries devices, you MUST uninstall their software BEFORE installing Windows 8.1, and DON'T install it afterwards. It will brick your Windows install.

This is a known issue.

Could that be related to being stuck in the boot screen after applying PC settings?

Really? Can you provide some proof because if that is the case I will not be installing 8.1 tonight. I googled but can't find anything about their software bricking a windows installation.

I use Logitech G35 headphones and need software installed to get the surround sound...

Well, sounds like a good thing I did not have the option to update, as I use both a Logitech Keyboard & Mouse.

Decided going to sit this one out for at least a few days, if not a couple of weeks, and let them sort everything out and make sure everything I am currently using is supported. Last thing I want is to install an OS that renders certain devices or apps I have useless.

I have to say, MS really needs to get their ###### together with the OS upgrades. Even if it is only a few of us who are affected, that is enough IMHO.

Thanks for the heads up Somnus. (Y)

Anyone else getting an "infinite" windows defender definition update? Windows defender already says I have the latest definition, but windows update shows the exact same update every time I check for updates, and if I click install it just instantly says 'installed successfully", then next time I check the exact same definition update appears.

    • Surprise Execs are dumb. I hope the rehired engineers said were not coming back until we get 2x our salary.
    • Ford execs say they made a mistake when they replaced human engineers with AI by David Uzondu Ford recently announced that over the last three years, it's had to rehire about 350 "gray beard" engineers to mentor younger staff and reprogram diagnostic systems and AI tools that were failing to meet up to quality expectations. The company's VP of vehicle hardware engineering, Charles **** said that leaders overlooked the deep experience of veterans who survived many product cycles. **** admitted that simply replacing them with AI was a huge mistake, and that while AI is "a fantastic tool," it remains "only as good as the information you use to train it." The rehired engineers now run mandatory meetings to troubleshoot vehicles and reprogram automated engineering software and AI tools to prevent glitches before production. These technical specialists hunt for failure points before parts ever reach the plant floor, helping prevent the massive recalls and defects that previously cost the company billions as it aims to cut one billion dollars in expenses this year. In last year's JD Power Quality Survey, an annual study that measures the quality of a car during the first three months of ownership, Ford finished 10th among mainstream brands and scored below the industry average. But this year, JD Power ranked the automaker as the top mainstream brand, placing it above the likes of Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. Ford attributed this massive improvement directly to the expertise of these returned engineers. Ford's realization that AI cannot magically design and test quality vehicles without senior human oversight is just the tip of the iceberg. When Careerminds looked at companies that conducted AI-driven layoffs, researchers found out that 35.6% of those companies had to rehire more than half of the employees they previously fired. Another 32.7% had to rehire between 25% and 50% of them. In 2024, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO of Klarna, proudly announced that its new chatbot was doing the work of 700 full-time customer service agents. As a result, the fintech company froze hiring and cut hundreds of positions. But by mid 2025, and into 2026, Klarna was scrambling to recruit human agents again because customer satisfaction had plummeted. It turns out, while AI is very good at answering basic questions like how to check an account balance, when faced with complex customer issues that require nuance, the thing usually resorts to the unhelpful, robotic corporate jargon we all know and love.
    • Free AI in IDEs is shifting to paid models Or you know, you could just learn to actually design and code apps, use frameworks to handle the repetitive parts and not use AI at all - and voila... free for life!
    • In a sane world US antitrust laws wouldn't even allow these companies to be in the position to be subjected to EU directives. As you say, better than oligarch nothing.
    • Apple reportedly has a second-generation iPhone Fold planned for 2027 Good grief, Apple hasn't even released a first folding phone and the Apple faithful is already obsessing over the sequel? Seriously people, go out and touch grass... because this level of obsession is borderline stalkery/neurotic.
