Tech issues solved added in tech forums

Recommended Posts

A lot of members posted in the random threads to provide interesting, amazing or funny things. Other members took advantage of them, which is not wrong or anything. The members with higher post counts drove the need of members with less post counts to post more, and posting more sometimes leads to posting frivolously. I think having the best answers view may improve things on Neowin.

The thing with best posts.. is it's easy to exploit.. but you can't remove it.. because sometimes you will find a post on the internet that is ACTUALLY the answer you need.   As non-subs can't edit post the only way to make it visible and shown as a best answer is to post a new post and mark it as the best so others see it.

I am not sure what to think about it. I've seen how the "best answer" system works on sites like Yahoo Answers, and in many cases it's not very well. The posts chosen as best answer are often completely wrong or at least no more helpful than any of the other posts. Many people may contribute valuable information to a question but only one gets chosen and a lot of times they're chosen randomly or based on personal opinions. Also I think that the majority of posts on Neowin are not really answers to questions, we're mostly discussion so "best answer" isn't even going to apply to a lot of our users. I understand what the administrators are trying to do, I'm just not sure this is the best way to go about it.

You're trying to make me bad because I don't get best answers. :o :p

But yeah I suppose it's good for the ones that do get them. :)

You're a lime master. Unless the topic is about mastering lime then you should not be able to provide the best answer.

Since he is the master though.. clearly ANY lime related posts should have his words be the best answer possible.

I like the idea of this but i think the "like" count being shown instead as that will be more relevant to the entire forum.

The problem with best answer is that a lot of threads don't have a "best answer" as they're just discussions.

So people that mainly take part in those threads will be excluded.

Another idea like someone else suggested is keep the best answers count to support forums where it would be relevant.

I vote this be the best answer to this thread

I think the best answers thing will lead to potential abuse to get a higher best answer count.  For instance someone will post in the hardware section "My computer is not working, should I hit it with a hammer?" or in the windows community "I bought a new desktop, should I install Windows 95 or 3.11 on it?" and then people will post answers like "yes you should" then the OP will select the best answer.

I'm not one to make waves or anything but this doesn't seem like a good way to rank members experience etc... Less so than post count does since best answer can be so easily exploited by members to push each others rank up. I'm not saying post count is a perfect system, far from it, but this seems even less so.

If you made any of those threads.. I would be sure to answer!

Chris123NT, one of the most respected members in the Windows community.. has 0 best answers count.  I thought the new system was for so new members saw high quality post counts..  He has made many guides in the past and very knowledgeable.. Going by this new system.. not sure if he should be trusted or not.. Not saying post count makes a difference.. but.. come on now.

I did on yahoo answers one time. I asked whether my new Windows 98 computer I bought yesterday will run Half-Life and I got some response like "not sure if trolling"  "are you serious?"

If you made any of those threads.. I would be sure to answer!

here's my take on this.

at a per thread level the best answer is obviously pretty relevant. but at a forum as a whole level the best answer count really have no more relevancy than the like count does

i'm not going to say revert it back to showing post count, but i agree with the others that i don't the the 0 best answers should show

Apparently that is not the case.

The lime related posts are in the off-topic/general sections, so they won't get best answer.

On a more related note: Maybe add the ability to replace best answer with something else because as I have say before not everyone will get these often.

I'm pretty sure, everyone will agree, that Budman is one of the most intelligent and helpful forum members. He doesn't care if it takes 30 seconds or 2 hours to help someone with 1 post or 1000 post.. He goes into great detail and will start from the basics if he feels like someone doesn't understand the issue.

He only has 15 best answers. He is a very dedicated forum member and someone that goes out of his way to help someone, only has 15 best answers.. I know this hasn't been implemented very long.. but he has helped far more than 15 people with well, thought out, and detailed post since it has.

Bear in mind, that the Best Answer feature has only recently been introduced, and not many members have been, let's say, encouraged to use this feature. Hopefully this change will promote using the feature more, and also it will start to bring these numbers up to a more accurate level.

Remember, it is still early days, and we have only just rolled this change out, over the course of the next couple of days/weeks, we will be refining this system so that it works better for everyone. :)

Hello,

Im going to purpose another system.

Why cant this be a user side option? If you want to see the best answers, click it in your user config. If you want to see the post count, click it in your user config. This is problably the EASIEST method to let everyone be happy.

Also another problem to this system is it is limited to the tech section. Posts counts count everywhere except 1 or 2 sections.

I should be given the Most Fowl Contributor, because I post the most fowl and absurd things

    • I hope this encodes in to AV1 or AV2 as currently tiktok uses h265 and h264.
    • Qualcomm reportedly in talks to build custom video chips for TikTok parent ByteDance by Karthik Mudaliar Qualcomm is reportedly in advanced discussions to provide custom chip-design services to Chinese tech giant ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok. According to a report from Reuters, Qualcomm could be involved in designing custom silicon tailored for ByteDance's massive data-center workloads. If it goes through, the deal would make ByteDance one of Qualcomm's early anchor customers for its fastly growing custom chip-design division, For years, Qualcomm was the king of making smartphone processors and modems. The company has also been moving into the PC ecosystem and other formats such as on-device AI for Android XR headsets. However, this particular deal is about Qualcomm's custom Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). For a platform like TikTok, ByteDance needs hardware that can help it ingest, process, and serve billions of short-form videos daily. Generalised hardware is no longer the most cost-effective and efficient route, which is why ByteDance is trying to develop custom Video Processing Units (VPUs). VPUs designed specifically for ByteDance’s algorithmic needs could drastically reduce data-center power consumption and improve encoding speeds at an unprecedented scale. The underlying tech behind these processors is actually from Qualcomm's recent acquisition of AlphaWave Semi, a high-speed connectivity specialist company. By combining AlphaWave’s high-bandwidth IP with Qualcomm’s architectural expertise, the company could begin mass production by the end of 2026, if the talks go through. All this also comes at a time when U.S.-China tech relations have dwindled. Escalating trade frictions between Washington and Beijing have severely impacted the export of high-end AI chips from U.S. firms like Nvidia, AMD, and Lam Research. Yet, the Qualcomm-ByteDance discussions show that U.S. tech companies are still actively seeking growth avenues and are open to doing business with China, where regulators still permit. Reuters notes that the outcome of this deal could be uncertain, and ByteDance might also seek partners other than Qualcomm. via Reuters | Image via DepositPhotos.com
