My post wasn't voted Best Answer when it was!

What is the Tech Issues Solved label?

It is the Best Answer feature enabled in all the tech areas and allows the topic starter and moderators to select which post is marked as Mark Solved, or the best answer to their support request. Some people are helped and don't bother to vote, but if you feel that your post should have been voted Best Answer, you can report the topic (first post) and then give the link to your post which moderators can then set to Mark Solved.

So in short, if you feel you answered the support request but didn't get 'marked solved' for it, report it, but please wait at least 24 hours before reporting the thread, give the OP a chance to come back and mark it for themselves.

Do not PM a moderator to have your post marked as solved, use the report button so that staff have a log of the action taken.

What is the Best Answer feature?

The amount of topics a member has solved in the Tech Areas of Neowin is shown in the post user info pane:

post-2-0-10463800-1383756895.png

When a post hasn't been answered yet, the Topic starter or staff member will see a notice, bottom right of the first post in the topic, like so:

post-2-0-39472900-1383756896.png

The topic starter or a staff member are the only ones who can mark the topic as solved and see that notice.

When the topic is Marked Solved, everyone sees the answer in the first post with a link to jump to it, as well as:

In the topic title post-2-0-45965200-1383756899.png and topic index post-2-0-52277900-1383756900.png

Can I do it for stuff posted, like, 6 years ago? (I'm serious.)

If it's genuinely the best solution to the problem, sure. Yes the advice may be out of date but someone may still find use from it.

Is it really a problem that someone does or does not mark an answer as the best?

Yes, Best Answer is also shown in the topic title in the forum view, so anyone coming in off a search will immediately see that their problem is probably answered.

What about threads where the OP marked the wrong or not appropriate post as the answer ;)  Have come across this quite often where the OP marks their own follow up post as the correct answer when it is missing info, or just not anything to do with the answer..

But then it's up to the staff to decide if your answer really is the best or not... it's fail all round... sorry.

The best answers thing might lead to what happens in yahoo answers, like people posting cockamamie things like "I bought a new touchscreen laptop, should I still Windows 95 or Windows 98 on it?" or "How to I get rid of the Windows 32 folder, it is taking up too much space?"  or "My laptop is dirty, should I put it in the washing machine?". Then people will comment and the OP will select the best answer leading to potential abuse.

I was just about to post almost exactly this.

Guess neowin is going to become as abused as yahoo answers afterall. :(

At least Yahoo Answers provides us with some hilarious entertainment.

You say that, but I used to take it seriously, until my level 7 top contributor account was banned for a difference of opinion.

Never went back. Decided to actually use this account on this site instead.

Even though I'm not above comic posting, and have the odd arguement here and there I still believe this is a far superier site and it's users more mature, even the usual users I argue with, they've matured their posting, so arguements here aren't so bad and actually debate some really good points.

Yahoo, to me has been overtaken by trolls and best answers boosters. And anyone offering a quality answer gets 'thumbs down' by trolls (I hope they keep that option out of neowin)

It can't become like Yahoo answers because only the topic starter can vote for the best answer, it isn't a crowd vote (which leads to some hilarious answers). Moderators will only vote for the answer when the OP doesn't and it is reported.

In a case such as that where you know that the answer is incorrect and can provide a correct one. Post the correct answer then report the thread, the staff will then adjust the selected answer as necessary.

Hello,

Yeah, I feel like a recent thread was answered better by me than another member.

Example:

Topic: What do we breathe?

Answer 1 (Marked as best answer): Oxygen

Answer 2: Oxygen although air that is breathed is also composed of nitrogen and argon.

Yeah, Answer 1 is correct and answers the question, but Answer 2 also does and gives a bit more information. Answer 2 should be marked as best answer :)

So in short, if you feel you answered the support request but didn't get 'marked solved' for it, report it, but please wait at least 24 hours before reporting the thread, give the OP a chance to come back and mark it for themselves.

Sometimes people prefer the short and simple solutions rather than the complex more detailed ones.

Hello,

Another small issue: I made a thread at 12:21 and a staff member replied at 12:23 and automatically marked it as Best Answer. To avoid this, and wait for others to reply and/or comment, staff should be able to mark as best answer BUT until a 24 hour time period passes, it wont be automatically marked as best answer. This avoids a thread being abandonded and not entered because best answer was already marked.

This topic is now closed to further replies.
