Windows 10 is getting a Japanese anime mascot, but it still needs a name

If you saw a recent story on Last Week Night with John Oliver on HBO, you know that Japan loves its mascots. Today, Microsoft's Japanese offices revealed the look of its Windows 10 mascot and will launch a campaign to officially name her in June.

Yes, Microsoft's mascot is a cute 17-year old anime girl who comes from 100 years in the future, works part-time in the gadget-heavy city in Akihabara and, of course, she loves to play online games. Her voice will be handled by anime voice-over actress Ai Nonaka.

Microsoft will start its public campaign to name the Windows 10 mascot on June 19, and people who enter will be eligible to win some prizes, including five grand prizes that will be autographed by Nonaka. This is nothing new for Microsoft; the company has had similar mascots in Japan for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Internet Explorer.

There was a guy on the MS Community forum who tried to use the fact that 7 had one and 8 didn't as "clear evidence" of 7's superiority.   There are strengths and weaknesses for both versions, but whether or not there's a cartoon character for the OS is neither.

Didn't OS-Tan characters evolve naturally at first by artists in the community?

I can see MS getting a head of it by / marketing it themselves.

Not a bad mascot of Windows 10 actually.

Well it beats Clippy. I just hope that they don't have to deal with her screaming, "kawaii!!!" every time they look at a new feature.

Windous 10 kawai desu ne?

Sorry my Japanese is bad but who's the mascot? And whose this Ai Nonaka? It is very confusing! \s

The mascot is the anime girl image in the OP. Ai Nonaka is a well known Japanese voice actress who will be doing the voice for the mascot.

Ironically for his argument, Win8 actually has two mascots.

    • Simple answer is yes, you will still get the Windows updates and as long as browser is up to date, you will be good. Only thing secure boot does is protect you against boot level threats and make it harder to install other OS's. I've been looking into this pretty thoroughly lately myself as wifes computer has secure boot disabled plus my other, older computers that run Linux, don't have secure boot enabled. Have seen all kinds of questions about this on the Linux Mint and MX Linux forums. Just don't suddenly enable secure boot now.
