[Official] Star Trek: Discovery Thread

Recommended Posts

Better yet, if Gabrielle Burnham has time traveled so may times, how could she not see Discovery's plan to capture her?

The Trek verse is filled with things that cannot and are not fully explained.  And some of the things you posted have been explained in the episodes but you either did not get this, or just do not accept the explanation.   And sometimes, takes a few episodes to explain things that have happened.

If you are not enjoying the show, maybe stop watching it.  Seems like you are getting worked up and/or upset.

Nope. I'm neither upset or worked up. I'm enjoying the show fine but what I'm NOT doing any more, is considering it anything to do with the Trek that came before.  This is a new timeline, with sod all to do with what we know; more like Kelvin verse than anything else.

So, yeah I liked that episode quite a bit. Though some of the ways the plot is playing out is a little well, cheesey I guess? Not sure how to describe it, but it feels a little weird I guess? In any event:

Spoiler

When Pike saw that future we all know he lives through - I actually choked up. Imagine being a Trek fan all your life as I'm sure you all are - and Pike is such a singular character from TOS even though we barely saw him and only barely scratched the surface of his character, that this made me tear up seeing that. And of course we all knew he would accept that fate, because he's a true THUG :D

I'm not sure if this whole AI thing will turn out to be the Borg, but they sure made sure we saw GREEN nanotechnology in this episode. Like they put a point on it to make sure we knew it was green if you get what I'm saying. Could be a swerve by the writers but who knows at this point. I literally thought that control, controlled dude was going to say "resistance is futile" though so, lol?

And yes, they are totally going to bring in Zora (I think that was the future Discovery AI's name).... they are obviously going to put Discovery in the nebula we see in that short trek. Which I think is amazing planning on their part tying all that together. But again, how it ties it into mainline canon, I have no idea.

April 5th 2019 episode:

again was going crazy the whole episode wondering:

Spoiler

why don't you just blow up the damn ship???!!!.

Then when they finally suggested it at the end, I was "really? you just think of that now?"

Still not convinced they are going to blow up the ship anyway.  Show is called Discovery.  If the ship goes, so does the show.  Unless they are going to commission a new ship and call it NCC-1031 A

Saw the newest ep and...

Spoiler

They tried to blow the ship up, doesn't work.  The sphere data has merged with the ships systems and decativated the auto self destruct and also raised the shields.  Pike orderd photon torpedos but no go.  I suppose you could try to keep going till the shields are out but I figure the ship might just jump into warp and start running.

One more episode to go.

On a side note, fans are asking CBS to do a new show with Pike and the enterprise, no surprise there.

I like the Pike character.  Would be good to see a show centered around him.

Looks like they are actually going to go through with sending the ship into the 33rd century (since it looks like the AI Zora will be involved and they are going to be stuck there for quite some time it seems) but I don't see how that fixes the canon issues with the show. Unless they are like, erased from the timeline somehow. Which would explain why Spock never mentioned a sister and why a spore drive is never seen again etc. But who knows.

It'd be really awesome if the last scene of the season is Discovery in the 33rd century, they get a hail and its from a starfleet ship...from Picard. Wishful thinking I'm sure, but with the Picard show still coming they may want to do something big here. Not that sending your main crew and ship 1,000 years into the future isn't big....

Spoiler

I don't think the crew is going to, the plan is to send the ship and MB in the time suit.  If all goes to plan, doubt it, she should be the only one stuck there.  The rest of the brdige crew of disc can jump ship before it goes into the future.

The whole deal about Spock not talking about a sister though, come on, he never said he had a half brother till we got ST5.  We never knew he was engaged till that one TOS ep.  I think fans just need to understand that Spock, in canon, never talked about his personal life unless it was necessary.

As far as the spore drive not being in canon, well, discovery is the only ship with it and the tech for it.  So we know from that one short trek ep that it IS in the future so it does make it there.  That would explain why it's not see in any of the other shows and works out nicely.  After the ship is sent away, there's no reason to try to build another one and they never did find a way to make it work without the human navigator.  I think it's just dead end tech, one and done.

I wonder where this leaves season 3?

On a side note, I liked the way they did the enterprise bridge.  Yeah yeah I'm sure there's a group out there losing their s...  But when they showed it, for real I almost choked up.

Same.  In my mind I said "That! That is how you deal with the issue of old fashioned futuristic tech"

Yeah but if the rumors going around are true, a good portion if not all of season 3 is going to be in the future time frame - so the bridge crew (and some of the ship crew I would imagine?) going along with MB to the future makes sense.

As for Spock not mentioning a sister etc - don't preach to the choir man! I totally agree with what you said, plus there's the whole thing that you know uh, its because its in the script! These people who constantly complain about her and Spock never mentioning her etc need to understand that she OBVIOUSLY didn't exist until the script writers came up with her character in that she was needed for this series. Like, is it so hard to understand that little point? How dare you create a FEMALE CHARACTER who is related to Spock that didn't exist before now for this BRAND NEW Star Trek series. I mean, really guys?

Spore drive was just an example btw, because first off I'm fine with "canon violations" since as I said before in this thread I am not some canon stickler like some segment of the online population seems to be. Second, there is other tech involved with the show that is obviously "outside" of what canon would "allow" so as long as they either deal with it or explain it I'm fine with it. (hologram communications not withstanding)

And I also got teary eyed when they showed the Enterprise in all its glory like that. First of all, they nailed the whole 60s era retro vibe thing but updated to 2019 visuals. Second, that bridge was amazing looking, though it did lens flare like JJ's bridge did :D In any event, can't wait to see the Enterprise getting some action this week. Just hearing those torpedo launch sounds gave me goosebumps.

Even the corridors were done nicely.  Loved Georgiou comment about thr color :D

I really hope they do a series with Pike; Anson has done an outstanding job.  I'd actually perfer to see that over a Section 31 series at this point.

In case anyone is into Podcasts, Anson and his friend do a podcast called The Well and they've done intreviews with Doug Jones (Saru) and Ethan Peck (Spock), not really Trek specific but more about their careers.

Absolutely.  A captain so dedicated even though he knows his future fate!  Section 31 was intriguing on paper, but one laid so bare - a bit toothless really.

Spoiler

I really don't think they're going to erase the timeline, as that would undo the meaningfulness of Pike making the decision to take the time crystal and seal his fate. Spock never mentioning his sister isn't an issue from lore—most people don't go mentioning their family at every opportunity—and the spore drive is obviously going to be retired, likely by agreeing not to use it to protect the mycelial network or by ultimately destroying the network.

As for ending up in the future, it would certainly be interesting but I fear doing so would constrain future Star Trek series set beyond the TNG/VOY/DS9 era.

Spoiler

Damn, I love a good space battle.  And love how they use the TOS theme in the series.  Hopefully   we will see the Kirk Character in S3 of the show, hopefully.   Tho, I am liking Pike.  And looks like we will see the 7th signal next season.  And on a side note, I like Spock better with a beard

Spoiler

Well they really did it. Now we just gotta wait until early 2020 before we see what happens next. That was an AMAZING episode. I was crying several times, but that might just be me I guess.

One point though, other than keeping Discovery secret forever (and obviously getting a new ship when they come back to their present time) and all that spore drive tech etc etc - the timeline wasn't "fixed" so all the people who hate Discovery will just keep on going with that one. Personally I like how they tied things up, it works for me.

And god damn that space battle. That was insane.

I liked it to.  Love the special effects and love space battles.  Tho, kind of curious if we will see 2 timelines in S3.  one of the Enterprise crew, one of Discovery.  Will be interesting to see how things play out.  And I liking Michelle Yo.  Glad they brought her back.

Well, they kinda did, with a stupid pathetic and idiotic, hand waving "gag" order to never talk about anything about it ever again.

Lame.  Just... Completely and utterly lame.  Better if there'd been a timeline wipe and everyone forgot Discovery ever even existed.

If they ever did a Pike series it'd be, at best, in 2021.  And the schedule would have to be worked out.   It takes up a lot of your time, 8 months, for season 2, and it's 14 eps.   So for the right $$ and a better schedule, Mount is in, he's said so.  And I find it very interesting that they enterprise bridge set they built is it's own set, in a different area, and not an old set they "redressed" as is the case in other shows.

I think it's CBS planning ahead and wanting to keep it around and put to use.

Though my problems with the show are known and are many, I really LIKE the Enterprise bridge and corridor sets.  They are, IMO, a very good modern interpretation of the 1960's classic.

Glad we're finally getting a Trek set in the future (and yes, Picard will be after voyager), but them being 1000 years in the distant future now, it's a clean slate on what they can do. No more canon cry babies.

Question is though, do they stay in the future until the show ends (whether that's S3 or S7 etc) and don't return to their original time frame or do they come back home at some point in S3 or S4 etc? Emperor Captain lady has to return at some point since she's gonna be in the S31 series right? Plus, there is the logistics of doing a future based show such as, new tech and aliens etc. Do they just literally become an Enterprise knock off running around the 33rd century or what? Lots of questions to be answered.

Maybe s3 is them trying to get back home?  Though I think the point is that the ship stays in the future regardless, so it'd pretty much be the end of the show if/when they do return to their own time.    I'm presonally fine with these CBS all access shows being on the short side, 3-4 seasons, maybe 5 tops?  They can move them out and spin up other shows to keep filling up the trek universe.

I'd rather have long running series, instead of a different flavor of the year. Reminds me of power rangers back in the 90s, every couple months it'd be a new cast. It would also tire out the franchise. Things need time to grow and blossom. Having as many running series that they're planning is also concerning. Although I'd rather have a Pike show vs a s31 show. Looks like Ash is head of 31 now.

If Starfleet is still around, I'd imagine them ending up on a new ship, or them working with Starfleet/Time ops to get home. We know the Discovery is abandoned at some point, and left to hide/wait. I can't imagine the ship returning to the 22nd century unless they're able to get the sphere data off of it somehow.

With the ban on discussing anything related to discovery though now in 22nd century starfleet. I can't imagine they'd show up back home again. They fixed canon by them getting flung into the future and starfleet covering up everything, I don't think they'd want to break it again.

Sure if it's a show you like a lot you keep wanting more, but too much is also a bad thing when they start to run out of things to do.

    • Wow you are right, I never even noticed this until you said it! (870E Aorus Master) Before testing this card I had a TP-Link tx401 10GbE PCIe card in that slot (now using XikeStor 310 Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter).
    • Lack of 5.1 makes this a no sale. What I really wish creative would make would be a USB version that supports 5.1 analog audio for speakers, can switch to headphone mode, and matches the specs of their top tier cards. The current X870E AMD motherboards dont have a great option for adding a PCIE x1 card without cutting down pcie lanes to the graphics card.
    • The Microsoft Office feature that time forgot by Usama Jawad I have been actively using Microsoft Word for the past couple of decades in academic, professional, and personal capacities. Although I used it through the perpetual version of Office apps at the start, I have been an active subscriber of Microsoft 365 Family subscription for over five years now. This means that my Word installation is regularly updated with new features, some of which I don't really like, but that's beside the point. As new features get continuously added, old ones that used to be a staple of Word have started to take a backseat. While I was reminiscing over my Windows experiences from my childhood today, I suddenly remember one such capability that I heavily used in my younger years but have not really touched in over a decade, and haven't seen in documents created by others either. That feature is WordArt. Just to clarify, WordArt is not a Microsoft product specific to Word, and is included in other Office apps like PowerPoint and Excel too. However, Microsoft Word is the app that I used Word Art in heavily, while making assignments or other deliverables for school. If you're unaware, WordArt offers a collection of styling techniques for text, introducing 3D effects like shadows and reflections in the text. It used to be one of the coolest things ever when I was at school and me and my classmates would often compete to ensure that our assignment's title in WordArt was truly the best and stood out above the rest. See some examples of WordArt, still present in the latest versions of Word below: Although WordArt is undeniably cool, it has taken a bit of a backseat, and has been relegated from the Home tab to the Insert toolbar, along with a bunch of other utilities, making it very easy to miss. This isn't exactly surprising because WordArt doesn't really have a place in academic and professional documents anymore, and while I have seen some creatives using it while developing promo material, even that sector has gravitated more towards dedicated graphic designing tools in the past years. For the vast majority of us, WordArt doesn't really exist, and that's alright. At least, it's still an option that can allow us to reminisce our childhood or even make some quick text stylization, if we really need it. Perhaps its usage has waned over time or the novelty has worn off, but I haven't even seen children use it in their academic assignments anymore. In fact, many don't even know that it exists. Maybe that's the fate of every beloved feature. What once felt cutting edge eventually becomes a relic, quietly tucked away as tastes, trends, and technology move on. WordArt may no longer dominate school assignments or decorate the covers of classroom projects, but for those of us who grew up with it, it remains a colorful reminder of a time when making text glow, bend, and cast giant shadows felt like the height of creativity. Hidden behind a few clicks in modern Word, it still survives not as a productivity tool, but as a small piece of computing nostalgia that refuses to disappear.
