One of my first photos with my new Canon 80D and all I can say, is wow, what a fantastic camera.. 90% of my shots in focus, though i've not rigorously tested.. this photo has been cropped and you can still see lots of detail. Love the camera and the quality!

Budget smartphones with excellent cameras in the U.S.
      by Namerah Saud Fatmi

Image via Huawei In today's installment of budget smartphone exploration, we shall continue our hunt for champagne tastes on a beer budget. Previously, we took a dip in the shallow side of the pool and curated a list of smartphones with slick designs. This time, we shall be looking at phones boasting superb cameras which drive a hard bargain.

For the purposes of this article, we will be considering phones that released in the U.S. this year. Our recommendations consider anything priced between $250 to $300 or a little above as a budget phone. Let's begin!

      iPhone SE
Image via Apple Apple as a cellphone brand is wildly popular for its great cameras and premium picture quality. Earlier this year, the Cupertino-base tech giant unveiled the 2020 version of the iPhone SE. At $399, it is a little over what most people would consider a budget price. However, there's good reason to include this phone on our list.

This year's iPhone SE sports a singular 12MP wide lens on the rear which has a ƒ/1.8 aperture and up to 5 times digital zooming capabilities. Meanwhile, the situation on the front involves a 7MP selfie camera with portrait mode. 4K video recording at up to 60 fps is also supported and you can take 8MP still photos while recording. The phone's maker didn't bother with any additional lenses or depth sensors that have become so commonplace. Despite this, the image qualities are pretty darn good.

You can buy the Apple device here.

      Redmi Note 9 Pro

Say what you will about Chinese phones but they sure do know how to give customers a bang for their buck. The Redmi Note 9 Pro is a testament of that statement. For about $235, users get a quad-cam setup on the rear consisting of a primary 48MP Samsung GW2 lens, 8MP ultra-wide lens, 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The Xiaomi device can also record 4K videos at 30fps and super slow-mo videos at 960fps.

Additionally, the Redmi Note 9 Pro has a super-detailed Pro mode in the camera app which works even in video mode. It also works with the ultra-wide angle sensor and the macro camera. As for the front camera, the phone sports a 16MP selfie snapper.

You can read our review here and purchase it here.

      Huawei P40 Lite
Image via Huawei Despite its scuffle with the U.S. and the Google Play Services cutoff that followed suit, Huawei has been pushing forward with vigor. The smartphone maker launched the P40 Lite for the European market at the beginning of the year. It sports a quad-cam setup consisting of a 48MP f/1.8 primary shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide angle camera, and 2MP depth and macro sensors.

Turn the P40 Lite around and you will find a 16MP f/2.0 camera at the front. The video recording function supports 1080p at 30fps. If interested, you can buy the Huawei P40 Lite for about $294.92 here.

      Moto G9 Plus
Image via Motorola UK We have decided to include the Moto G9 Plus on our list because even though it hasn't launched in the U.S. yet, people can easily find unlocked variants online. Priced at $300, the Moto G9 Plus is the latest generation of Motorola's popular G series of budget smartphones.

Moving on to the smartphone's camera specs, the Moto G9 sports a quad-camera setup on the back. This consists of a primary f/1.8 64MP camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and 2MP macro and depth sensors. As for the front snapper, that is a 16 MP f/2.0 camera. It captures videos at 30fps in ultra HD resolution.

If you're situated in the U.S. and looking to buy this phone, you can find an international unlocked version of it here.

      LG K62
Image via LG To complete our set of recommendations, we have chosen the LG K62. Following what seems to have become a trend, it too features a quad-camera setup on the rear. This includes a 48MP primary lens with an LED flash, a 5MP 115° ultra-wide angle lens, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro camera lens. The selfie camera is a 28MP shooter.

You can buy the LG K62 for a price of $239.99 in the U.S. here.

Budget smartphones with excellent cameras in India
      by Namerah Saud Fatmi

In today's installment of budget smartphone exploration, we shall continue our hunt for champagne tastes on a beer budget. Previously, we took a dip in the shallow side of the pool and curated a list of smartphones with slick designs. This time, we shall be looking at phones boasting superb cameras which drive a hard bargain.

For the purposes of this article, we will be considering phones that released in India this year. Our recommendations consider anything priced between ₹13,000 to ₹18,000 or a little above as a budget phone. Let's begin!

      Samsung Galaxy M31s

One of the best phone cameras in the Indian market is sported by the Samsung Galaxy M31s. The tagline for the M series model speaks volumes, touting the device to be a 'mega monster'. Big brother to the Galaxy M31, the Galaxy M31s features a combination of four cameras on the back. This includes a primary 64MP camera which uses the Sony IMX682 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro camera, a 5MP depth sensor and on the front, a 32MP selfie shooter.

Additionally, the Galaxy M31s can record videos in 4k at 30fps. In our experience, the Samsung M-series device takes pretty great pictures. You can read our review here and purchase it for about ₹19,888 here.

      Poco X3

Xiaomi-owned Poco launched the Poco X3 a few months ago and it has been a massive hit. The smartphone is an all-rounder with excellent photographing capabilities. On the back, it features a main 64MP camera with an f/1.9 aperture, a 13MP 119-degree ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture, a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro sensor. The front sports a 20MP lens with an f/2.2 aperture.

The Poco X3 can capture videos in 4K at 30fps and in 1080p at 60fps with the main camera setup and in 1080p at 30fps with the front camera. If you're intrigued by this smartphone, you can read our review here and buy the smartphone here. The phone costs around ₹16,999.

      Redmi Note 9 Pro

Say what you will about Chinese phones but they sure do know how to give customers a bang for their buck. The Redmi Note 9 Pro is a testament of that statement. For upwards of ₹12,999, users get a quad-cam setup on the rear consisting of a primary 48MP Samsung GW2 lens, 8MP ultra-wide lens, 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

The Xiaomi device can record 4K videos at 30fps and super slow-mo videos at 960fps. Additionally, the Redmi Note 9 Pro has a super-detailed Pro mode in the camera app which works even in video mode. It also works with the ultra-wide angle sensor and the macro camera. As for the front camera, the phone sports a 16MP selfie snapper.

You can read our review here and purchase it for roughly ₹12,999 here.

      Realme Narzo 20 Pro
Image via realme Our next pick is the top-of-the-line variant in realme's more recent Narzo line of phones. The realme Narzo 20 Pro is an attractive and rather jazzy looking smartphone. Trendy designs aside, the device also has great camera specifications. It boasts a 48MP AI camera with an f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide angle camera and 2MP macro and depth sensors.

Meanwhile, the 16MP selfie camera uses the Sony IMX 471 sensor. It can capture videos in 1080P at 30fps, 720P at 30fps, and also supports 120fps slow-motion video recording. The realme Narzo 20 Pro has a very reasonable price tag. If you're looking to procure a unit, you can buy it for ₹13,999 and above from here.

      Motorola G9
Image via Motorola India And finally, the last budget device in our list of recommendations is the Moto G9 which made its debut in the Indian market a few months ago. Although most people do not find Motorala phone to be very becoming, the general populace agrees that they make some brilliant budget devices.

The Moto G9 comes equipped with a triple camera setup at the back. This setup includes a 48MP f/1.8 lens with Quad Pixel technology, a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor and a 2MP f/2.4 macro lens. For selfies and video calling, there’s an 8MP f/2.2 camera on the front.

You can acquire a unit of the affordable Moto G9 for upwards of ₹11,499 here.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 could feature Under Display Camera and S Pen, replace Galaxy Note21
      by Rajesh Pandey

It is looking increasingly likely that Samsung will not launch the Galaxy Note21 series next year. A new report claims that Samsung has "confirmed" the launch of a new foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold3, in June next year. The device will feature S Pen support along with an Under Display camera. Apart from the Galaxy Z Fold3, Samsung also plans to add S Pen support to the Galaxy S21 Ultra that's reportedly scheduled to launch in January next year. The latter might not ship with an S Pen slot though while the Galaxy Z Fold3 is expected to have a slot for it.

Seemingly, Samsung has already decided that it will be launching the Galaxy Z Fold3 in June next year, with the final samples of the device going into mass production. The company has been able to successfully add an in-screen digitizer underneath the Ultra-Thin Glass of the Z Fold3 and has also managed to ensure that the protective glass does not scratch easily with the use of the S Pen.

As per the report, Samsung was planning on adding a pop-up camera on the Galaxy Z Fold3 to provide a full-screen experience. However, since pop-cameras are not reliable, the firm has been focusing on building its Under Display Camera technology for its upcoming foldable. Nonetheless, nothing is set in stone and if Samsung sees that the performance of the Under Display Camera is not good, it might end up skipping the technology from the Galaxy Z Fold3.

Google Camera 8.1 brings Pixel 5's camera UI and Cinematic Pan to older Pixel phones
      by Rajesh Pandey

Google is rolling out a new update for the Google Camera app that brings the new Pixel 5 camera UI to older Pixel phones. The Google Camera 8.1 update also brings some of the new features that Google debuted on the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 to the Pixel 4 and Pixel 3 including Cinematic Pan. This allows for smooth panning shots that have a cinematic feel to them.

The update also brings a revamped Camera UI with a quick zoom toggle and new UI buttons.

The Google Camera 8.0 app has so far been exclusive to the Pixel 5 so far. While it has been possible to sideload a new version of the Google Camera app on older Pixel phones, the process of doing so with v8.0 was not that straightforward and required a factory reset. This deterred many Pixel owners from getting their hands on the Pixel 5 version of the Google Camera app. Thankfully, with the roll-out of Google Camera 8.1, Google is bringing the same new UI to all Pixel phones including the Pixel 2 series.

For now, the rollout seems to be a slow one from Google, with very few reports from Pixel 4 owners on the internet receiving the Google Camera 8.1 update with the new UI. A wider rollout should happen in the coming few days or weeks.

At the moment, it is unclear if the Google Camera 8.1 update also brings any of the other new Pixel 5 camera features like Night Sight portrait mode to older Pixels or not.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra display could support 120Hz at WQHD resolution
      by Rajesh Pandey

Leaks surrounding the Galaxy S21 series have already started making their way to the internet despite the official unveiling of the devices still over two months away. The latest leak courtesy of @UniverseIce has revealed some key specs of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The device will feature a 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED LTPO panel but unlike the Galaxy S20 and Note20 Ultra, it will actually be able to support the high refresh rate at WQHD resolution. Existing Samsung flagships do feature a 120Hz display but that is only available when running the displays at FHD+ resolution. The use of an LTPO panel is also a big deal as it allows for a variable refresh rate which will help reduce power consumption. Samsung is already using an LTPO panel on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra.

Other specs of the Galaxy S21 Ultra revealed by the leaker point to the device supporting 45W fast charging and featuring a 108MP HM3 primary camera sensor. Despite supporting 45W fast charging, Samsung is only expected to bundle a 25W USB-C fast charger with the Galaxy S21 Ultra as it has done with its other devices.

Samsung plans to announce the Galaxy S21 series earlier than usual next year to counter the iPhone 12 series from Apple. A recent leak points to the company announcing the Galaxy S21 series in mid-January and putting the devices on sale by the end of the month. Like the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung intends to launch three different Galaxy S21 models next year, with renders of all three devices already being leaked.
