Well, it's no longer looking like we'll have to wait until E3 2017 to find out what's in the box.

 

A major gaming outlet recently visited Microsoft to take a look at Project Scorpio's internals, ahead of a planned exclusive blowout of coverage.

Forza Motorsport 7 was utilized to showcase Scorpio's power, which we revealed recently has been planned for some time as a headline title to exemplify the power of the next Xbox.

Forza Motorsport 7 will run at a 4K resolution on Project Scorpio, and if our information is to be believed, it'll look truly stunning.

 

It looks as though Project Scorpio's specifications could be revealed as early as next week, potentially putting an end to long-standing debates over whether it would be using the latest Ryzen CPU tech from AMD, or something a little older. Specifically, we have heard Thursday could be the day all of this comes to pass, but take that with a pinch of salt for now.

 

Either way, Project Scorpio is slated to run at 6 teraflops (TF), putting it at a significant GPU advantage over the Xbox One, and its chief competitor, the 4.2 TF PlayStation 4 Pro.

Microsoft will unveil Forza Motorsport 7 as the headline title for Project Scorpio in the next few weeks, and it will run at a blistering True 4K resolution. We've heard reports from reliable sources that the game, in true Forza fashion, already looks utterly stunning, and will showcase just what the console is capable of.

 

Our list comes from marketing materials that include titles Microsoft wants to use to exemplify Project Scorpio's six-teraflops (TF), True-4K capabilities. And it naturally includes several first-party titles, such as the aforementioned Forza 7, Crackdown 3, and State of Decay 2. But it also contains a few heavy-hitting, third-party titles.

The list includes some fairly obvious games, such as "Call of Duty", FIFA, and Madden, but also Battlefront 2, and Red Dead Redemption 2. It seems that each of these games will appear on Project Scorpio with a 4K resolution.

I wonder which "major gaming outlet" they're talking about, and I find it odd they want to show this off now instead of waiting for E3 at June.  BUT, having said that, I can see the thinking behind it, I mean E3 is still going to be full of news from everyone else and not just MS even with them changing to Sunday from Monday.  This puts them in the gaming talk for pretty much 2+ months till E3.

 

Another thing, if they get this hardware reveal out of the way first, then at their Sunday E3 conference they can talk up the games and not have to go over the hardware again and take up time.  Could be a good thing, more games news for E3 which is the key in the end.

 

They did this with the original Xbox One as well, but was it that far apart from E3?  Either way, April got way more interesting now.

Yeah, you know, after I posted that I thought a bit to myself and said it'd probably be DF, since the push here is for true 4k gaming and so on I bet they showed them forza 7 at 4k and let them talk it up since DF has been so key to all these resolution debates and so on in the past.

DF have been critics of the One for awhile now so Microsoft must be confident with it abilities. Think it will also allow them to show games running next to Pro versions etc on reveal since DF are doing it. Don't think legally Microsoft would be able to get up on a reveal and be running both and be like look better better than Sony! :laugh:

Hope it's some sort of livestream. Either way T-2 hours.

DF does have it's youtube channel, they could put a video up talking about it plus an article on the website, I don't expect anything major though.

This is just FM6 which they ported with 4K textures took 2 days. Can't wait to see FM7. Console will handle DX12 through the GPU, Auto downsampe to 1080 for those without 4K.

Processing draw calls - effectively telling the graphics hardware what to draw - is one of the most important tasks the CPU carries out. It can suck up a lot of processor resources, a pipeline that traditionally takes thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of CPU instructions. With Scorpio's hardware offload, any draw call can be executed with just 11 instructions, and just nine for a state change.

 

"It's a massive win for us and for the developers who've adopted D3D12 on Xbox, they've told us they've been able to cut their CPU rendering overhead by half, which is pretty amazing because now the driver portion of that is such a tiny fraction," adds Goossen.

This is quite awesome.

42% faster is not "much" to you?   Sure maybe it could've been 60% but I'd rather not be spending $700 on a new console.  And besides, if all you do is compare the teraflops then you're not seeing the whole picture.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is marketing hype for the difference between DX11 and DX12.  It's hard to tell with the info that given.  One of the big pushes for DX12 though was reducing draw calls.

Hopefully it is some type of hardware change. Am looking forward to more info. MS engineers can get quite creative and sometimes the tech dribbles back down to consumers via their partners.

Not much actually, just add an entire PS4 to PS4 Pro and you've Scorpio.

 

Not much more powerful, you're right. Just 50% more memory, 22% more GPU clock, UDH BluRay drive etc. etc.

It depends on the GPU makers and if they want to add DX12 directly into their GPUs, but I have a feeling the answer is no.

 

This isn't like going from DX11 to DX12, which was a software side, API change.  This is taking D3D12 from software and sticking it into the GPU directly.  It's a very custom job specific to the xbox.

    • AMD RX 9070 GRE AI, Blender benchmarks vs 9070 XT, 7800XT, Nvidia RTX 5070, 4070 by Sayan Sen Earlier this week, we shared the first part of our review of AMD's new RX 9070 GRE. It was about the gaming performance of the GPU, and we gave it an 8 out of 10. As a follow-up, similar to how we did with the 9070 XT and non-XT, we are doing a dedicated productivity review for the RX 9070 GRE as well, where we compare it against the 9070 XT, 9070, 7800 XT, as well as Nvidia's 5070 and 4070. This will include AI, rendering, compute, and more benchmarks. AI performance, especially, is a very important metric in today's world, and AMD also promised big improvements thanks to its underlying architectural improvements. We will be pitching it against the data we already have for the RX 9070, and RX 9070 XT, but also the Nvidia 5070 FE, MSI GeForce RTX 4070 VENTUS 2X 12G, and Gigabyte Radeon RX 7800 XT GAMING OC 16G as they are in a similar price class, but also because we do not have a comparable 5060 Ti card lying around here that we can compare it against. Before we get underway, this is a collaboration between Sayan Sen and Steven Parker, who lent me his test bed. Also, there was no editorial input from AMD. Design Moving on, the RX 9070 GRE we were given is an XFX Swift triple-fan, dual-slot design with two 8-pin connectors. At 30cm (self-measured), it will fit in most systems easily. There is no RGB either. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE by XFX from all angles. Test system Our test system consists of the following: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini V2 Flow (Amazon|Newegg) ASUS Z890 ProArt Creator WiFi (Amazon|Newegg) Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus (Amazon|Newegg) Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet - 44x37 (Amazon|Newegg) 2x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB (7200 MT/s in XMP) (Amazon|Newegg) Sabrent Rocket4 Plus 2TB SSD (Amazon) Windows 11 25H2 (Build 26200.8246) AMD shared a press driver based on the recently released Adrenaline 26.5.2 that we were required to use. We now move on to our benchmarks. First up, we have Geekbench AI running on ONNX. For some reason, the 9070 GRE does exceptionally well here in both half-precision (FP16) and single-precision (FP32). It manages to beat the RTX 5070 and RX 9070 non-XT, and is only behind the 9070 XT. Since Geekbench runs in short bursts instead of continuously hammering the graphics card, it seems the GRE's faster boost clocks are helping here. Next up, we move to the UL Procyon AI test suite, starting with the image generation benchmark. We chose the Stable Diffusion XL FP16 test since it is the most intense workload available on Procyon. The Nvidia cards do very well here, as even the 4070 out-muscles AMD's best fairy easily. The positive thing about the GRE is that it gets quite close to the 9070 non-XT in this test; this indicates that the VRAM does not play a very big role here, as SD XL relies on float16 (FP16). So this is something to keep in mind again. If you wish to work with float32 AI workloads, graphics cards with larger than 12 GB buffers would likely emerge as victors. Regardless, the gains are still massive on AMD's 9000 series compared to the 7000 series. Following image generation, we move to the text generation benchmark. This is one test where the 9070 GRE struggled, quite a lot. It seems that the 12 GB VRAM and lower memory bandwidth of the new Radeon 9070 GRE are hurting it quite a bit; the split is massive, especially in a test like Llama2, which packs 13 billion parameters. As such, in all the tests, the 9070 GRE is the slowest of the lot. Next, we tried Blender, and here the AMD GPUs were beaten by Nvidia. Rendering is something the Green team has always had a lead over the Red side, and it has not changed so far. On the positive side, though, the 9070 GRE shows significantly better results than the 7800 XT, which means AMD is on the right path. Catching up to Nvidia, though, will require a lot more effort. And we hope HIP and ROCm can keep improving. Wrapping up AI testing, we measured OpenCL throughput in the Geekbench compute benchmark. The RX 9070 GRE alongside the 9070 did not fare well here at all, even falling behind the 7800 XT. Interestingly, even the RTX 5070 could not beat the 4070 on OpenCL, so perhaps this suggests that OpenCL optimization may not have been a priority for either AMD or Nvidia in the modern era. Conclusion We reached the end of our productivity performance review of the 9070 GRE, and we have to say it's a mixed bag. Unlike the 9070 and 9070 XT, the GRE excels in some areas while losing ground fairly easily in others. Similar to how it happened in gaming, any time the card's memory subsystem gets hammered, it tends to fall behind the others. This was the case with text generation, wherein we saw the VRAM sometimes hit its maximum available 12 GB of usage with larger model sizes. So what do we make of the RX 9070 as a productivity hardware? It can certainly be used, but you have to know it has its limitations. For those looking for a GPU that can deal with more, AMD recently unveiled the Radeon AI PRO R9700, which is essentially a 32 GB refresh of the 9070 XT with some additional workstation-based optimizations. On a similar note, the new Ryzen AI Halo platform is something you can consider if you want to set up a local AI processing station. Considering everything, we rate AMD's Radeon RX 9070 GRE a 7.5 out of 10 for its productivity performance. Price is less of a factor for those looking at productivity cases compared to those considering the GPU for gaming, and as such, we felt it did quite decently on many occasions and can be handy if you need a 12 GB GPU and, for some reason, don't want to get Nvidia.     • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
