A new BioShock has been in development at Cloud Chamber for quite a few years now, with the first teaser dropping all the way back in 2019 from 2K Games. It was only a few weeks ago that the publisher confirmed the new entry is going through some development troubles, and now, layoffs have been confirmed. At the same time, a familiar face has joined the franchise as its head: Rod Fergusson.
2K removed Cloud Chamber studio head Kelley Gilmore and creative director Hogarth de la Plante from the project earlier this month.
"Some of you guessed it, I’m returning to 2K to lead a series that means a lot to me as the new Head of the BioShock Franchise," confirmed Fergusson on social media. "I’ll be heading up Cloud Chamber and overseeing development of the next BioShock game, along with franchise extensions like the in-development Netflix movie."
Rod Fergusson announced his departure from Microsoft (yet again) recently, leaving the Diablo team after five years of working on the franchise and four of its major projects. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Fergusson has joined a 2K Games studio to help with BioShock either.
When 2013's BioShock Infinite was having development troubles at Irrational Games, Fergusson joined in to help the project cross the finish line. It seems the publisher is hoping that the same can be done to the new entry.
"While I’m excited to get started in the coming weeks, I recognize the studio restructuring is a difficult time for the team," added Fergusson. "I’m deeply grateful for the work done so far, and I’m committed to building a BioShock game we’ll be proud of and that our players will love."
Jason Schreier from Bloomberg has also independently confirmed that an "unspecified number of staff" is being let go from Cloud Chamber.
