Mojang Studios' Minecraft LIVE presentation today didn't just have information on the future of the best-selling game in the world, but it also revealed that the block-based universe is coming to the real world soon. Minecraft World is now official, with the studio working with Merlin Entertainments to add an official theme park expansion to Chessington World Adventures in Greater London, UK.
The new land will feature brand-new attractions featuring "block built" environments, animals, characters, and items inspired by the game. Interactive adventures, themed retail and dining, and even a Minecraft coaster will be present at the location once it's open.
“Minecraft World represents a meaningful milestone in our ongoing journey to expand the Minecraft universe," said Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Senior Creative Director of Entertainment at Minecraft. "We're thrilled to have partnered with Merlin Entertainments to realize a place where you can literally be in the Minecraft Overworld and have an adventure of your own with your family and friends."
Merlin is describing this addition to its park as one of its most ambitious developments, saying that everything from the rides and attractions to the theming will be "unmistakably Minecraft." The project's cost is said to be $70 million.
News of this collaboration first broke back in 2024, when the two companies announced that they were working together on Minecraft-based theme parks in the US and UK. Only sitting behind Disney as a theme park developer, Merlin is also responsible for LEGOLAND theme parks, as well as Alton Towers Resort, Thorpe Park, the Gardaland Resort in Italy, and the Heide Park in Germany, among others.
“Minecraft World will allow friends and families to play, explore and craft together on a truly epic scale," adds Angela Jobson, SVP of Global Brand, Merlin Entertainments. "Working closely together with Mojang Studios we are meticulously creating an authentic world that the global community of Minecraft fans will want to immerse themselves in and experience the game in a whole new way."
The Minecraft World theme park experience at Chessington World of Adventures will open sometime in 2027.
