The Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition remaster of the 25-year-old classic real-time strategy game released in 2019 for Windows PCs. With a console release now behind it, the Microsoft game has now landed on a platform it usually doesn't release games on nowadays. Starting today, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is available officially on macOS platforms.
It has been a long time since a mainline entry from the real-time strategy series has landed on Apple platforms. Age of Empires, its two sequels, and Age of Mythology all received official OS X ports (under MacSoft) up until the early 2000s. However, Microsoft never restarted the porting process once new remasters and fresh installments started coming out in recent years. This might be changing now though.
For those unfamiliar with the remaster of this strategy experience, it comes with major visual upgrades over the original, control improvements, fresh game modes, full multiplayer support, and all of the popular historical campaigns.
The Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes expansions are also included in the base game with their own campaigns and civilizations. A large number of DLCs are also available for fans to purchase, adding more storylines and civilizations.
This edition of the game is Apple Silicon native. At a minimum, the store listing says that players will need to be running macOS 15.7 or newer, an Apple M1 or A18 Pro CPU with their built-in GPUs, 8GB of RAM, and at least 16GB of space for the installation.

What's unclear is if the macOS version will have crossplay support. Xbox and PlayStation players have full crossplay with each other and the Windows version as well.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is now available for purchase for macOS via Steam and the Feral Interactive store. A Mac App Store version is slated to land later this year. Anybody who already owns the game on Steam now has access to the new platform version for free too.
