Seriously, why can't google just make it an open beta? Or at least allow signups or something - most of their features (froogle, etc) are public before they are finished and finalized.

Probably because they are load balancing also and to just allow a bunch of people into the service at one time isn't the best way to ramp up to load. Secondly, they can get more free PR from folks by limiting the list of "special" people who get to beta test. They kind of slapped the faces of long time blogger users by only inviting those who were "active" and not saying what that criteria was. Some folks have had accounts for years and weren't invited because they weren't active enough apparently. They should have opened it up for anybody with a blogspot account prior to a certain date.

My guess is within the next 30-60 days a wider net will be thrown for invites.

Uh, have you used spymac?

There may not be any ads, but at least Gmail will work. (when it's finished anyways)

spymac is a joke. The POP access hardly works and the web mail is slow as a snail. But then it could be just for me.

man, $45 is too much for someone that it is costing nothing to distribute. Stop acting like the RIAA and just take $10-$20, it is still a profit for doing nothing. (there goes my oppurtunity @ an invitation)
