Running Mac OS X on x86 PC!

So now that you've all had your fun arguing, let's get back to making it work.

I have the Mandrake 9.1 PPC, Apple Hardware Test, and Mac OS X Panther CDs. I also have a G4 tower next to my PC but I don't know how to do very much with it other than installing Panther... Can someone walk me through making the ISOs of the Panther CDs on the Mac (since it supposedly doesn't work on a PC)? When I set pci_ide0_master_image to a path like "\\.\D:" (cdrom) then, like windows, it will think any of the Mac CDs in there are raw data and it can't boot them. I was also thinking of taking the hard drive out of the Mac, putting it in my PC, and then somehow pointing pearpc to it (not sure how since Windows will think it is uninitialized and therefore not have a drive letter). Anyways, first I would like to try using cd images, so could anyone tell me how to make them on the Mac?

how do I convert .dmg.sit file to .iso?

First, unstuff it.

Next, copy the *.dmg file to a Macintosh running OS X and use Disk Util to convert it to a *.cdr.

Finally, copy it back to your Windows machine and rename the extension to *.iso.

There is NO other way to convert DMG files to ISO.

Guys... this is a .01 release, Daz actually got Panther installed and _temporarily_ working. For a .01 release, that is astonishing. I can't wait to see how this project evolves.

Arg, in the darwin installation it gets the point of asking me which partition to install it onto but there are no partitions so it mucks up!

Anyone know how to partition it?

Make sure that you have the primary master enabled (set to 1 instead of 0)

pci_ide0_master_installed = 1
pci_ide0_master_image = "pearpc-3gib.img"

I use Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro for my stuff. Photoshop is sweet on the Mac.

Ever hear of Adobe Premiere Pro? Adobe Encore DVD? AVID DV?

I do professional video editing for a local TV station, all on macs, and I have many problems with editing on OS X/Final Cut Pro. 75% of everything is the same in FCP, Premiere, and Avid. But the other 25% in FCP isn't the better of the three (in most cases..). The dock, the most 'annoyingist' thing of the century, bugs the **** out of me. It's always in your way; even if you autohide it. Those bouncing icons.. gah.

I'd take a PC over an Mac anyday for video production or image editing. This is comming from someone who is paid to edit video for a living; not someone that does this for fun. Trust me, if your in these apps every day, you get past the pretty aqua look real fast.

Edit: Just to clarify, I have a Dual 1.2ghz G4, 2gb of RAM, 4x36.6gb SCSI HDs, 23" HD Studio Display, and a 19" CRT (for the clips window mostly..).

But hell, who am I to bash a mac. A mac is a mac; it gets done what a PC could do. A PC is a PC; it gets done what a Mac could do. Macs have been able to emulate x86 for a long time, it was only a matter of time before x86's would be able to emulate a PPC.

If your a PCer who wants to get his feet dirty on a mac, by all means mess around with this app ;-). But me, I'll wait for 0.6 or even 1.0 before I even seriously clear HD room for another virtual image :blink:

see, the reason why school computer is slow is cuz there are a lot of poeple using that machine. everyone handles the computer differently. thats why schools replace their computer every so often. my school are now using emac just last year we were using the same one your using.

These computers are used for only a few classes, and thats it. I have been using these machines since they bought them, and they've always been like ****.

Is it possible to get a 1:1 cpu speed (not with the current stuff.. but I mean.. is it at all possible?).

What would be the best-case-scenario for the Host:Guest CPU speed? (again, not with the current app; but at all)

only true way to get 1:1 speed is to have a PPC processor rider card installed into your system. Apple use to do this with older PowerPC's they had 486DX processor cards installed in their systems so emulation wasnt nesacery. In an emulated environment though, 1:1 is near impossible because of the conversion of instruction on PPC to instruction to x86 takes more then one instruction to do, therefore loss in cycles, so in the end reduction of performance

    • Ladybird Browser is no longer accepting outside contributions thanks to AI by David Uzondu The Ladybird Browser Project has announced it will no longer accept public pull requests and will limit changes to those made by its maintainers as it works towards its first alpha release. According to Ladybird's creator Andreas Kling, this is "not a change we make lightly," but the rapid shift in AI capabilities forced their hand. Previously, a massive PR implied that the person behind it put a lot of care into the code and is ready to "answer for the consequences." Now with AI, anyone can generate a PR without even understanding the bug fix or feature they want merged. The blog post goes on to say that the team is closing all open public pull requests immediately, and that maintainers will not treat external forks as a review queue for upstream Ladybird. Instead, the team wants outside contributors to focus on reporting bugs and running tests. Kling started Ladybird back in 2019 as LibHTML, a simple HTML viewer for his hobby operating system, SerenityOS, but by September 2022, it had turned into a full-fledged browser project. What sets Ladybird apart from the likes of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Mozilla Firefox is its totally independent engine, which does not rely on pre-existing codebases. The project maintains a strict policy against default search engine deals or user data monetization, keeping development funded entirely by donations and sponsorships. Generative AI is forcing open source project maintainers to rethink how they handle public code contributions (and the whole open-source thing in general). One month ago, a leak about the National Health Service (NHS) suggested the organization was planning to take all of its public repositories private ahead of a May 11 deadline, thanks to Mythos (an AI model that Anthropic believes is too dangerous to be released to the public) and its ability to find and write exploits for zero-day vulnerabilities. Thankfully, the Government Digital Service (GDS) issued a counter-report titled "AI, open code and vulnerability risk in the public sector" that stopped the shutdown by pointing out that hiding code does not improve security.

    • I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.
    • I wonder if "put it back the way it was for decades" ever crossed their minds? 🤣
    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
