[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

All of you people saying your stuck aren't looking nearly hard enough. The puzzles aren't THAT hard, and considering all the maps are layed out so you more or less go in a single direction it should be fairly straight forward.

Another clue is that you will never need to use something that can be thrown away. For example if there is a cliff nearby you will never have to use anything movable by the gravity gun.

ok, my game is messed up. i was looking in the video options menu and decided to see what widescreen looked like. after i applied it the resolution got huge and now there is only a black screen with a huge cursor. i restarted the game and the same thing happens. anyone know if there is a config file i can change the aspect ratio?

If you don't have a Widescreen display, it won't work (lol). Fortunately I use a 17" Widescreen 16:10 @ 1680x1050 and it all works just fine.

Restarting it won't have any affect because it's all saved. I honestly don't have a clue how to change it, you could try the last option available to you...reinstalling the game. But hopefully someone here will be able to figure out a workaround - possibly a command line to change the resolution from the console.

Force your max resolution to like 800 or 1024 in your display properties.

Then you should be able to go in and change it back.

I can't believe people are saying the ending was good. It left the entire game inconclusive. It left every question unanswered.

Who is G-Man?

Where the hell was Gordan Freeman for the past 10 years?

Who are the combine?

Also considering that the entire storyline up to the citadel was simply keeping Gordan Freeman safe, i thought the ending was retarded. Funnest game i've played yet though.

OK im lost, what do I do here?

SPOILERS MAYBE

Look right, jump over the ledge.. I think thats where you are. The enterance scene to nova prospekt is freggin amazing. Most intese and and interesting part fo the game for me so far.

Do you know what a Trilogy is...?

THere is no opening/ending to one...

Sounds like someone needs to read a dictionary.

trilogy

\Tril"o*gy\, n. [Gr. trilogi`a; pref. tri- (see Tri-) + lo`gos speech, discourse: cf. F. trilogie.] A series of three dramas which, although each of them is in one sense complete, have a close mutual relation, and form one historical and poetical picture. Shakespeare's `` Henry VI.'' is an example.

Greek trilogi, series of three related tragedies

Havn't played HL2 yet, but looking forward to it. Thats what happens when you have a two year old and a three month old. No more life.

People who think the storyline is booring or thin.. You really have been rushing through the game. The story is deep and VERY detailed.

G-man is one of the most importan person in the game. He's Gordons "agent" in a way. In HL Freeman is hired by G-man to do his bidding. And in HL2 it's time for his new job. And that's the simple version, it's much more than this.

In HL the reasonan cascade open a rift between earth and Xen so Nihilanth (the last boss in HL) sends his army to earth because humans have been traveled to Xen through portals for a long time. He wants it to stop. When Freeman defeat him the army Nihilanth sent is free and Freeman is their liberator. The aliens then decide to help humans (i'll come to that).

When Freeman killed Nihilanth The Combine act.. They have conqured Xen a long time ago and have med the inhabitans on Xen their slaves. The Combine arives on earth in a massive portal invasion and defeats earth in 7 hours. Dr. Breen was the person who told earth to surrender and by that he gets elected to be the human/combine man of interrests. That's why he is a leader in HL2. Then they gather humans in cities where they can controll them more.. The citadels places in each city etc. gather resources for The Combine so they can enslave/modify humans to their benefit.

Gordon arrives at City 17 because G-man have decided that it's the right time to interfear with Dr. Breens/ The Combines plans. The rebels have contructed a local teleportation device which The Combine doesn't have the knowledge to build. So this give the rebels a huge advantage in this wartimes.

There's a lot I haven't said anything about yet. And stop complaining about the story, it's there but you haven't understood it or ignored it by either never explored or been running to beat the game as fast as possible.

OK so i have a Geforce FX5900 graphics card, which I KNOW is made for directx9...why on earth is HL2 saying my hardware dx level is 8.1?

I have the 66.77 drivers installed as the latest ones just blue screen my computer when I play HL2 :(

use -dxlevel 90

You need to get up in that window where the wire is coming from to turn off the power switch. Then, you can climb up that lader near the dead guy on the fence.

I forgot how I got up in the window though.. someone can help you on that though im sure.

Good luck! :D

We're also investigating a solution for the sound skipping problems a small number of users are running into. We'll have a solution for this as soon as possible.

From Steam!!

Lets just wait and see.....they are obviously looking into it.......... :shifty:

Most of your post is simply inferences. If you play the game you would never know where the combine came from in either of the games. Anyways the storyline isn't that thin, the running plot is very thing however. Most of the levels are just running around and finding some destination where you have to leave right away anyways because it isnt safe, and there is almost never an objective.

    • I can answer about the Linux bit. I only used AMD GPUs. I currently have a 9060XT (8GB) that fits my needs, I'm not a gamer, so I don't need that much GDDR. But lately, NVIDIA has grown a lot in the recent years. Oh, the horrors of NVIDIA drivers not working. But they have been getting better. I know a lot of members onm here that are running cachyOS and other distros, and are fine with a 4090/5090 variants. Really, though, I would stick with AMD variants.
