[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

Recommended Posts

Bought the legal bronce DVD package ... finished the game in under 15 hours on medium on my system, at 1600x1200 2xAA 8xAF and didn't see a framerate below 50 ....

... and ...

didn't had the feeling this is what I was waiting for all that time once. The end is just bullocks, and there is no story whatsoever.... Isn't worth the 60? I payed for it, maybe the mods will make up for that ...

*** possible spoilers ahead ***

Negative points:

- grahics, anyone who says that HL2 is better looking than Doom3 is blind, or doesn't have a fast syste:):)

- story, comon, I can write a story like that too! I didn't had 1 question answered, and a lot of stuff wasn't really well developed ... a week in a transporter? Didn't make that much of a difference. Also, those machines that are "eating" City 17, wth ... I mean, there has to be a more economic way to destroy/ take over a city?? Speaking of which, wtf is City 17? And if it is as large as seen in the last level, what did we play on? 5% ?

- dialogues ... Very bad, very bad ... some characters in the game just pause for 10 seconds, and then continue with their story

- vehicles, what a pain in the ass .. comon, 4 levels (or whatever) with that buggy, it really took the speed out of the game, was too repetetive, and I felt like having no goal in those levels ...

My personal opinion is that HL2 couldn't live up to the hype.

Thanks for speaking for the minority, i was afraid HL2 was becoming a dictatorship

Just copying a short post I did about the story from another thread..

-----

People who think the storyline is booring or thin.. You really have been rushing through the game. The story is deep and VERY detailed.

G-man is one of the most importan person in the game. He's Gordons "agent" in a way. In HL Freeman is hired by G-man to do his bidding. And in HL2 it's time for his new job. And that's the simple version, it's much more than this.

In HL the reasonan cascade open a rift between earth and Xen so Nihilanth (the last boss in HL) sends his army to earth because humans have been traveled to Xen through portals for a long time. He wants it to stop. When Freeman defeat him the army Nihilanth sent is free and Freeman is their liberator. The aliens then decide to help humans.

When Freeman killed Nihilanth The Combine act.. They have conqured Xen a long time ago and have med the inhabitans on Xen their slaves. The Combine arives on earth in a massive portal invasion and defeats earth in 7 hours. Dr. Breen was the person who told earth to surrender and by that he gets elected to be the human/combine man of interrests. That's why he is a leader in HL2. Then they gather humans in cities where they can controll them more.. The citadels places in each city etc. gather resources for The Combine so they can enslave/modify humans to their benefit.

Gordon arrives at City 17 because G-man have decided that it's the right time to interfear with Dr. Breens/ The Combines plans. The rebels have contructed a local teleportation device which The Combine doesn't have the knowledge to build. So this give the rebels a huge advantage in this wartimes.

There's a lot I haven't said anything about yet. And stop complaining about the story, it's there but you haven't understood it or ignored it by either never explored or been running to beat the game as fast as possible.

heh half life 2 and direct x in general looks much better than doom 3 and opengl in general. but thanks for speaking for the minority

Ok..well following some suggestions given in this thread I've managed to get rid of a lot of the stuttering that was happening. Thanks guys!

There is still some stuttering. I think it is all related to having to load the sound from my hard drive. I have a gig of ram, and I've tried different heapsizes for the game. But I still get the stuttering at a few key places. It seems like I wouldn't have this problem if the game would spend a little more time "loading" and fill up my ram before I start playing. Thats just a guess.

And where does all this information comes from? From the game itself? Where was this story when I was rinding around in that buggy?

I'm sorry, I played the game, and payed attention all the way through ... This information is nowhere to be found in the game!

Here is an idea guys, let's all post our screenshots of the G-Man. He's freaky and mysterious, so it sounds like a good idea. I don't have any by the way but I did see him once when I was looking in the combine soldiers' binocular stand thingy when it was pointed at a rebel camp or w/e. He was talking to one of the citizen rebel people.

Paying attention only gets you half way. You've got to think and use logic to get the rest.

584963668

Oh so you're saying that with a little fantasy one could discover the whole exact story? Either Valve's story-writers are very intelligent, to construct half a story which makes still some sense when ppl fantasize 50% of it, or either they did a quick job, and only told 30%, and let the other 70% be filled in by the ppl playing the game ...

(% are just an example)

And I'm just saying what I think of Half Life2 ... I'm glad that you enjoyed it, and I think norhing less of you now :)

Okay, no offence intended - but, um, "What's The Big Deal With G-Man?" <-- I honestly don't see why you guys are attracted to him...never seen a game character before?

584963775

He is mysterious :p

... and they have no girlfriends ;) lol jk

Well, G-Man is just kinda....well, mysterious, like yert* said. You don't get to speak to him alot and you don't know his true intentions.

Probably me being a b00b but...

On the bridge after u take out the gun ship u have to plug a plug back in to enable bridge access... ive played with this bloody plug for 10 mins now and it wont go in? am i doing something wrong? tried it manually and with gravity gun but it either pops down or up really annoyingly

thanks for your time

Actually all the information is in Elis lab just before you get the grav gun. Theres a notice board on the wall with newspaper clippings listing the teleporter attack on earth and the 7hour war as well as an investigation into the events at Black Mesa, eli then comes over and comments on it mentioning how the combine gave Breen the power he has.

    • Thanks for liking it! 😊 That's Arch Linux with Gnome.
    • LOL. Can't even quote and edit a comment correctly. Figures you're a Linux user.
    • It won't perform hugely better than the 3080 unless you're VRAM limited in games. Have you tried putting new thermal pads on them 3080 and giving it a good clean to see if you can regain your temps and overclock?
