i think i'm seeing what you mean by AB spam evn, i was getting 10k crits on gamon with AB spam. still only hit 1k dps after all the misses though.

Gamon is a level 85 character, you'd need several thousand hit rating to avoid the misses.

Go find some target dummies - there are level 80 versions on the second floor of that building in the valley of honor.

I just logged in so I'll post some numbers, but first some gear info:

  • Good set: 3840 spellpower, 33.3k mana, 17% hit, 26.8% haste, 39% crit (4 piece tier 10 bonus, heroic dfo, mmg, icc rep ring, black magic)
  • Bad set: 2177 spellpower, 17.7k mana, 12.24% hit, 14% haste, 17% crit (heroic dfo, mmg, icc rep ring, black magic.)

Self buffed using mage armor, glyph of arcane blast, arcane missles, and mage armor. I did 1 minute trials because that's about the maximum length a 5-man boss will ever last.

  • Spam AB until a 4 stack of the debuff is up then if Arcane missles is proc'd use that, otherwise use arcane barrage. No cool downs at all (this cycle is mana neutral - you can do it more-or-less forever)
    • Bad gear: 4700 DPS 282k damage (237k arcane blast, 36.4k arcane missiles, 8.2k arcane barrage)
    • Good gear: 8100 DPS 528k damage (436k arcane barage, 79.5k arcane missiles, 12.9k arcane barrage)

[*] Blow all cooldowns, spam AB until out of mana, evocate, potion, and do it again: This is strict "burn it down now!" stuff (ie bosses, ganking someone from range, or key phases in raid encounters)

    • Bad gear: 7,200 DPS 1:10 minute OOM (11,000 DPS prior to evocation)
    • Good gear: 13,500 DPS 2:55 seconds until OOM (19,500 DPS prior to evocation) -- but evocation comes off cooldown 3 minutes into this cycle so you can simply start over.

A more realistic appraoch to arcane mage is to do the OMFG burn cycle for maximum DPS, then drop down to the lower DPS "regen cycle" which is basically mana neutral and then go back to your OMFG cycle. For what it worth, I tried to immitate your described rotation (prioritizing arcane missiles), arcane barrage, then fire blast and the best I could manage was 6100 DPS in my 'good' gear and about 3600 DPS in my 'bad' gear. That's a pretty substantial difference. The scaling is linear too: increase stats by about 60% and the damage increase by about the same amount so it goes on more-or-less forever.

The main advantage to 'good' gear is that it lets you spend more time in your burn cycle and less time in your regen cycle. In bad gear I had to evocate exactly 30 seconds after I started. In good go twice a long (obviously doing about 60% more damage per second counts for something too).

The end result is that at "bad" levels of gear your theoretical DPS in 'bad gear' is about (0.25 * burn DPS) + (0.75 * regen dps) = 6200 DPS in iLevel 160.

In good gear you can maintain your burn cycle long enough that evocation and all of your cooldowns have come up by the time you go out of mana - that means you can sustain it basically forever: Spam AB with cooldowns, evocate, spam AB, evocate, repeat if necessary. Not bad for 2 buttons.

A WoW thread, just what I need.

I'm a former WoW player (quit-prebc) and am coming back for cata the only problem is I've got no clue where I should go, what class I should play or anything. I'm open to guides but mainly just want a place that isn't overcrowded (no queues) mainly horde, preferably pve. Is there any server like that? I played on zuljin (pve) from launch so hopefully someone can shed some light on a good server. Cheers

interesting.

well recount was showing ~2k dps with your rotations, but AB was hitting pretty hard for up to 13k which was nice.

i went back to ranged aoe at the request of my healer(my bro) but other wise AB was leading.

but i was running out of mana quite quickly in boss fights and taking time to evocate meant like 10 seoncds or so of lost dps at the end of the fight. otherwise it was all good.

will keep this all in mind going forward and thanks again for being pateint and helping me out :)

If you're getting 13k AB hits then you've got sufficient gear to do way more damage per second.

Base cast time is 2 at 4 stack seconds, assume 13k is a crit, that means you should be doing 6.5k non-crit.

Assuming 0% crit and 0% haste from gear that still means you should be over 3,000 DPS.

Can you like to your mage on the armory? It's pretty hard to pick a bad talent spec now but maybe I'm vastly over-estimating

what a fresh 80's stats look like. Maybe it's a difference in glyphs or something.

Things are living an awful long time if you can evocate, I don't suppose you could take a couple of screenshots of recount showing that "damage done" graph it has?

I don't mind helping people learn a new class - working through the basics will force me to double check assumptions, re-do the math, and make sure that I'm actually playing correctly too. I like to find and fix my screw ups before somebody else points them out to me.

I didn't have that much crit(28%), Spell Power(3100~) or haste(20%) and still did over 8.6k on dummies, and still got in the 17-18k range and end up top of the DPS charts in 10man H-ICC, and that's doing a 4AB stack then AM, and that was with a 5.7k GS. I have done much testing now that im at 5.9k GS

I'm loving arcane, running heroics, I'm seeing 40-50k crits with AB. Using my nuke macro, which is arcane power, mirror image, potion of speed, and my trinket tilasman of resurgence, I'll usually pull 17-20k dps on heroic bosses and usually do about 50-60% of the damage. Here's my armory link http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Muradin&cn=Mithrandur , been playing around a bit with fire, but currently it isn't in the same league as arcane is for me.

Loving leveling a hunter, and can't wait to do my worgen main hunter.. but I just hit 32 on my human hunter.. and it dawned on me that transferring all my old money from my dk on another server to my new server has left me with 5518 gold and that's only slated to go up because I rarely buy stuff on the AH.

and no arcane glyphs yet, will maybe take another look at them tonight or tomorrow

as for evocate i just end up doing it at the tail end of the fight and as soon as it's done it's like the boss fight is over.

and your guesses about my damage are about right.

the boss fight dps look better as you can see i was playing around with another aoe rotation, at the request of my healer.

Any of you seen the new Armory yet?

Link: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/frostmane/theralas/advanced (that's my character!)

Just replace the server name with yours and the character name with yours! (might have to change EU to US aswell)

There's a search top right on the page, but it only works from time to time.

The new armory has been up for almost a month now the only issues I have seen with it so far is the 3D modeler is not up yet, and for some reason on some peoples characters it won't display a character image yet however it will still show what gear they are wearing on the sides.

There are some pretty minor changes you can make that will improve your DPS:

  • Your points in Burning Soul aren't increaing your DPS, but 3% crit from Piercing Ice is almost a 3% increase (plus additional mana return from burning soul).
  • Improved mana gem is a large DPS increase for short periods but works out to a small one over long term fights: it's ideal for 5-man content / pvp (you're using it with arcane power and all your other cooldowns so the effect is multiplied. Looking at your spec, I'd probably take the point out of improved polymorph and improved counterspell to get it.
  • I have improved arcane explosion. It's value decreases depending on how much haste you have but unless you're at the GCD cap it's very good. You don't like AE so i guess these points would be wasted for you.

End result would be gaining 3% crit, gaining a about 300 spellpower on demand. Add in glyphs: a 5% straight damage bonus to arcane blast, 20% more regen while in combat means you'll gain ~3% more damage mage armor (because arcane deals more damage for having more mana)—you are using mage armor right?—and 5% crit to arcane missiles which turns into maybe a 1% damage increase.

All rounded up you should see maybe 10% more damage from that - not a lot, but every little bit helps.

You have a lot of healer gear but it's unenchanted so I assume you're just using it until something better drops or you can buy some Tier 10 with justice points. Being your first character I can understand that gold is probably in short supply while you save for epic flying and nobody likes enchanting greens or low-level epics this close to an expansion.

thx for the tips. and yeah i've been using mage armour non stop while in arcane spec.

yeah i've just been rolling on whatever is better than what i was wearing previously, even if it's not that great for mages. keep in mind the gear i have on is mostly from a single week of running normal modes and 2 days of slack running heroics. we ran maybe 3 heroics last night and i manged to pic up that epic staff which was a nice upgrade for me vs the quest green i had previously(almost 200 spellpower increase)

there's only like 2 weeks until cata hits, so i am farming dungeons more for money hoping to get my epic flying going before cata hits than gear. as it is i fully anticipate replacing most if not all my current gear quickly or at least by 85, so no reason to waste money on enchants on gear i'll probably replace even before cata hits, let alone with a few weeks of it going live.

after that i'm not sure if i will run more dungeons(likely scenario if i don't have enough gold for my epic flying), or go straight to BGs at 85 then rated BGs fairly quickly. alot of it depends on the guild i end up joining as well.

in tbc i didn't mind being poor all the time as i barely spent any cash and i figured epic flying cost would be nerfed, but it never was lolz. while leveling in wotlk i was up to like 1500g but i ended up having to spend it all on cold weather flying which annoyed me, and one of the reasons this toon sat at 78 for ~2 years.

81 is more like it.

:p probably lolz

i respecced but didin't take the time to test it out on the dummies.

did they increase the base cost of respeccing? it was like 26g for me, last time i actually reset my spec it was like 5g in tbc or something. well maybe not 5g but it started at 5g.

anyways hanging ou tin org last night i noticed i was getting pretty bad random stutter so started watching my fps and it was avg around 51 or so outside with 2 or 3 duels going on but dipping down to the low 40s fairly frequently depending on how many people were on screen.

this is with pretty much everything set to ultra and the option to reduce input lag for fps loss checked and dx11 set in the command line on a i7 920 with a 480 all at stock clocks. was just kinda surprising given my hardware

So, i got the hat from Azshara (sp?) that turns you into a random person, i was turned into a Goblin on my hunter and i'm not sure if i'll end up race changing to it once Cata is released. Their run animation seemed a little goofy, but their shooting and attack animations were great.

Here's the link again, since so many people like it: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info17749-ElvsUI.html

That is awesome! I will definitely roll on that server. I was thinking about going back to Zul'jin but unfortunately all my RL friends quit the game all together. I bought the game (again) for the steal that allowed me to get the game and 2 expacks for 20 bucks.

Are you horde? n00b question, how the hell do I add someone on battle.net? When was battle.net introduced? Haha!

It's under the friends list, when you click "add friend" i think it lets you choose which type to add, either way add "[email protected]" as a friend. Yup, i'm horde.
