I use a few main addons.. they do the job quite well:

Dominos -> For the bars

Xperl -> Frames

Fubar (with a bunch of fu plugins) -> Handles durability, location, xp, money, etc

Carbonite -> Awesome map/quest helping plugin

Healbot -> All my chars heal so..

Then I use other things like: skada (damage meter), decursive, bagnon, dbm, atlasloot, etc.

I checked my pets skills and there is no cower and growl is on. Maybe i need to be a certain level to get cower but i need the pet to hold dps more at early levels then i do when im high enough to have proper gear to protect myself.

Growl - Level 1

Cower - Level 20

Misdirection is level 10 i think

Glyph of Misdirection is almost a Must for levelling/soloing

I think with the new patches you do not actually have a proper controlled pet till level 10, its a pet yes but in a sence you don't fully control it till level 10

ya my hunter is level 17. so i have growl and control of the pet. I played a hunter before the patch and no matter the pet it grabbed aggro right away, now it grabs nothing. The alert above the mobs head showing growl hit shows up but he still runs at me even if i just use auto attack.

Well, they sent back a very fast response. While it was what i expected (answer-wise), i'm glad the support person managed to make it not so much like a automated email.

Greetings,

This is David with Blizzard Entertainment. I've helped many people in my 2 years with the company and I'm confident I can help you as well!

For both of those things we will need to hear from you via telephone for security reasons. Our contact info can be found by following the link in my signature.

Not sure what lvl you get kill command at, but use it as soon as your pet is on the mob it will increase your pets agro alot.

I use a few that I consider "crucial":

MiksScrollingBattleText: Much cleaner and organized than the default combat text

OmniCC: Lovely little cooldown timers for abilities

TinyDPS: Simple, clean, lightweight damage meter

Deadly Boss Mods: No introduction necessary

Badboy: No more gold spam!

Minimalist: Auto-repair, auto-sell, etc.

Sometimes I use TukUI, but I really hate pre-made UI packages. I also hate it when they deviate from the default UI.

hmm i'll check it out if QH doesn't work when cataclysm hits. i just don't like the built in one.

QH will definitely not work when Cataclysm hits. It's going to take a while before its databases are updated with all the new quests.

QHL does everything QH does, except it simply relies on WoW's built-in quest info. So it will do what you want it to do and it won't need a massive update when quests change and whatnot. There's basically no reason not to use it.

My "choice" DPS mods are as follows:

  • Unit Frames: Stuf or Pitbull
  • Cast Bar: AzCastBar or Quartz
  • Action Bars: Bartender
  • Timers: Forte Exorcits + OmniCC
  • Boss Timers: DXE
  • Threat: Skada + TidyPlates + ThreatPlates
  • Buffs/Debuffs: Satrina Buff Frames + Power Auras Classic

My list of "do more damage" addons are:

Unit frames for customization and display of information like boss percent HP in huge numbers (to plan around tarnsitions), range to target (so you're close enough to scorch and fireball). By positioning better you'll be able to minimize movement (1 second less moving per minute - 5% more DPS) and position yourself to deal mechanics (ie: soak splash damage) or to know if you'll be positioned nicely 'important' things like phase changes.

Cast bar: I think you're familar with already: you need to know what can be interupted and what can't, and for some classes lag is still important. It's a non-issue for mages with the new spell-queueing system but for some classes (notably shadow priests with mind flay) clipping is still a concern.

Boss Timers are a personal thing, I've a fan of DXE just because it's more granular in what it shows. For example Rotface casts slime spray. It's got a cooldown of say 30 seconds, a 3 second cast time and then a 3 second channel. You can opt to have it show any individual part of the ability: maybe you want to know when it's off CD so that you can save blink, maybe you just want to see the cast time so you know how long you have to run after he's picked a target, or maybe you're a healer and just want to see how long some idiot is going to be taking damage for.

Threat plates makes it easy to pick out new targets (like spawned adds) and to know exactly what mob you have threat from. It's important for things like heroic lich king where agro form LK vs Ghouls vs Shambling Horrors requires different sorts of action. Skada is a good all around "how much threat exactly do I have on my current target" addon with the added function of being a respectable damage meter and fail tracker.

SBF lets you filter buffs (for example I'm less likely to ice block if I see I have 5 HOTs + HOP) so being able to pull out short buffs from long/unimportant ones (like crusader aura) is worth the price of admisison. Being able to filter target buff/debuffs to only things you care about (ie: stuff you can spell steal, stuff you can cure, and stuff you have to care about like stacks of "OMG you die now" on your tank" is nice. Making some procs/buffs very obious (like your DFO) and others less obvious (like sindragosa's aura) make it easier to focus on what really matters.

Forte Exorcist for tracking things like internal cooldowns, living bomb on multiple targets, when important cooldowns like counterspell or mana gem are up, etc.

Power Auras for the really important stuff like "Orange ooze on me", "Some priest gave you power infusion: go nuts!" and "curse of 'if you cast you can't play for 30 minutes'" on LDW where reaction time has to be immediate.

what is better frostfire or frost bolt? what is the pros and cons for each?

my frost fire cirts for about 4k right now 2k regular hits 2.48s cast time

frostbolt seems to crit every time i use it for 3.6k 1.?? s cast time.

I was kinda wondering the same thing. For Fire even, but yeah for frost I use frost bolt until I get a proc for a instant cast frostfire bolt, then I use it, but with Fire I am almost tempted to use Frostfire bolt over Fireball.

Other than the boss mod, it's all just cosmetic fluff bogging down the system and cluttering the interface. Glad it works for you, but I wouldn't be caught dead (no pun) with all that crap. I like mine lean and mean; showing what I need and hiding what I don't. ;)

I disagree - the stock UI doesn't provide enough information about things like threat or "important" targets or abilities to make optional choices.

Something as simple as "When this cast finishes will I be able to start using my 'execute' ability?" isn't something you can easily answer without

an add-on so maybe you'll wait an extra 5 seconds before you start or start early and lose the chance to cast a higher damage ability instead.

All those little things add up over a 5 minute encounter, multiply it by 18 DPS classes and it's the difference between a 10% wipe and a kill.

Sometimes it's the difference between phase 1 and kill (ie: misinterpreting a threat warning on LK and thinking that the ghoul beating

you is what's causing your agro altert and not the raging spirit you just pulled and AOE'd your healers).

I have no doubt you can get through the game with stock UI - I've done BT, ICC, and AQ "at level" without them (on patch days) but the lack

of information forces you to rely more on luck than you should if you care about playing well.

If your goal is minimal, why not just have a single addon that turns off everything in the stock UI but the combat log: all the information you need is in there.

Clearly presentation matters.

well i am trying to decide which i should keep on my bar and which to remove. doesn't make sense to have two main nukes. one thing i seem to recall from my spec is that the cast time buff to frostbolt is used once then goes on cd for 15s? or something? sound slike they really nerfed the hell out of frostbolt if that's the case. i'll have to look at it again. but if not cast speed is pretty important in pvp, so a faster casting nuke for pretty similar damage, even if one has higher sustained dps than the other.

basically i have to figure out each spell's dps over 5-20 second periods(ie keeping a player at range, but wanting to move in closer for my instants like fireblast and cone of cold for spikes).

and while i haven't completed my new action bar set up yet(new spells, apaprently removed other spells), i would like to have teh space for potentially useful spells like spellsteal(have to check if it still has ridiculously high mana cost). i also like to keep to the KISS rule, keep it simple stupid. as it is i'm annoyed that i should have blizzard on my bar for dungeons, which is useless in pvp.

i think i'm forgetting another factor. aside from brain freeze which affects frostfire or firebolt but not frostbolt(lol wtf?) as well the tooltip on frost bolt i sextremely vague. no damage average, no slow %, just "long range spell that slows target, useful as an opener" or something like that. unlike frostfire tooltip which says "19xx damage, 50% slow speed"

i tend to use different add ons for world pvp, but i agree. add ons can give very usefull information instead of simply relying on animations alone or often confusing player appearances alone to decide a course of action quickly, such as first target selection and so on.

however it seems my favourite world pvp and BG mod, personal sentry, has been discontinued for w/e reason and no replacement has been made. iot was great not just for defending against ganks, but for detecting nearby enemy players, deciding on who to target first in groups and raids, and leading a pvp party in both world pvp and BGs. at one point i actually started recomending it to the alliance on my server after they QQ they were not ready for my attack, even if i stood 10meters away until they finished eating, and they still ignored me/weren't ready.

i also dislike how that action bar mod i used doesn't remove the default ui's flavour artwork stuff. that stuff is totally useless to me.

anyways, haven't checked yet to day but i doubt i sold any of my stuff. not sure if it's the items themselves(i undersold all the other same items on the AH) or the market on my server. /2 was completely filled with LF raid PUG spam every time i have logged in, and even LF raid pug spam in zones i have gone to (ice crown).

also phasing is effin dumb. bro was going to log his epiced out disc priest to help me level but since he had done the quests in the area he was unable to see me due to phasing. luckily he has a 77 mage who hadn't done it yet. one thing i love to do in wow at end game is go back and help other players quest or w/e, so this impacts my wow fun activities list.

Im BE so the starter Dragonhawk pet

To quote Adam Savage,

Well there's your problem.

You're using a Cunning Pet.

"Cunning Pets, like spiders, have a mix of offensive and defensive abilities and are particularly useful in Battlegrounds and Arenas."

You need a Tenacity Pet.

"Tenacious pets, like turtles, are more defensive and can occupy an enemy's attention while you stay at range."

The final pet type is Ferocity;

"Ferocious pets, like cats, can dish out damage but can't take it as well."

Look at it this way, Cunning Pets are good for when you're in groups and don't need the hate (aggro) held, they're like off tanks.. but specialize more in DPS, Tenacity Pets are like main tanks which hold and absorb damage and have a lot hate (aggro) holding abilities. Ferocity pets are the rogues of the WoW Animal world. They're pure DPS, but squishy.

For a short list of what kind of pet you need for a tenacity, I highly recommend reading this: http://wow-petopia.com/ .. and finding a pet that fits your personality and is easiest for you to feed.

Me? I love my eagle. It's a bird of prey, and is a cunning pet. I don't mind if it loses it's hate occasionally as I'm used to being in the thick of combat. I'm also a massive group junkie, so having something that absorbs some of the hate, but not all of it is a great thing. Plus, he just looks awesome:

I recommend a Tenacity pet for soloing, turtles in particular are awesome solo hunter pets.

Need any more advice and I'd be happy to give it.

BS. Complete BS. The stock UI provides more than enough information about threat; it's color-coded, can be modified to include a percentage above your target, and warns you with pop-up text that you've pulled threat. Unless you're a tank, you shouldn't need more than that.

As far as "on-proc" abilities, again, the stock UI does just fine. You have the built-in Power Auras visual alert, in addition to the glowing buttons on the action bar. Again, if you can't figure that out without additional help from an add-on, you're in trouble. Plus, figuring out which

ability to use next in your rotation can be done with a 10-second Google search. No need for an add-on.

As far as minimalism goes, I know there's a difference between minimalism and barebones. I don't think it's safe to run around with 3/4 of the screen empty. But I also don't think it's necessary to run around with flashy, distracting unit frames, chat mods, and other useless fluff.

Plus, these so-called action bar mods seem to do nothing more than shrink or unlock the basic action bars and/or remove the gryphons. Hardly worth the memory loss. Like you said, the difference between a wipe and a kill. I'd rather suffer with a wipe from a strategic error (to correct

and learn from) than suffer the embarrassment of having to say, "sorry, I was reloading my UI".

So after my month long break from WoW i'm ready to get back in (amazing what a break can do for you). I think i'm going to work on my hunter from now on, they seem pretty interesting in raids, decent in PvP, though the population is a little high. I still need to talk to Blizzard about my account, though. I plan on doing that tomorrow.

Sounds good. after the 23rd when they patch the game and change the environment ill give it another go.

So, i may not have to call after all. Me, in a moment of lucidity while playing with my phone, decided to do a Titanium Backup of all my apps. According to XDA it stores EVERYTHING, including the Blizzard thing that makes it sync. So, putting it on my phone now to see if it's true.

Edit: Oh god, had a near heart attack there. I restored the app, and opened it after Backup installed it (and did not realize i had not restored the data yet) so i open the app, and it gives me the setup screen. I think i'm screwed, so i go back into backup and click "wipe data" then "restore data" and badaboom it works!
