Guns aren't the problem. People are the problem. He could have gotten onstage with a knife and stabbed him just as easily. Should be outlaw knives?

This was just recently added to the report over at http://www.nbc4i.com:

Lead guitarist Darrell Abbott, who was known as "Dimebag Darrell," was shot and killed, NBC 4 reported.

"He's playing the guitar and (the gunman) just went right up to him," witness Jim Climer said. "He started blowing his brains out, basically. Dimebag was still playing. He didn't know what was going on, and that's when he hit the ground."

How sad. That just makes it even worse. I don't usually get sad about people that I don't know but damn just reading that makes my eyes a little misty.

No official word on the other band members, including Vinnie Paul. On http://www.pantera.com , the link to the news story says "Breaking News: Dimebag and Vinnie shot at Columbus Damageplan Show."

It's not just Dimebag Darell who's dead. Patrick Lachman (former "Halford" guitarist) is dead too, and a police man and some other person.Don't forget 'em :(

EDIT: btw, Vinnie Paul is OK.He has not been shot and isn't injured, as far as I know.

my sympathies go out to the abbott family. especially vinnie..he lost 2 people out of this..his brother, and his bandmate. the poor guy couldnt even get status updates from police as he was yanked off the stage by security.

for those still wondering - it sounded like the killer hopped the fence and bypassed security somehow to get in with the gun. i refuse to believe any performance arena nowadays wouldnt do at least a proper patdown.

dime was an inspiration to me. and I'm having a hard time coping with this. there wasn't a video I saw him in or solo he did that didn't floor me. he inspired legions of great or soon to be great guitarists. i got to see him perform but once and that was an unbelievable experience for me. his music will always have a place in my memory and wherever I go. I hope you're happily shredding for the angels up above, bud.

RIP 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbot, 1966-2004.

There are a large amount of arena sized events that don't do pat downs, metal detectors, or anything more than the occasional glimpse into any bag a person might have. I pretty much have no doubt the shooter came right in through the front along with everyone else. Of course none of this will ever change, as they aren't about to properly train security personell, nor are they going to shell out the big money for detectors. I'm sure the arena / club owners will be a little more attentive for a while, and eventually things will go back to exactly the way they were before.

Ironically the band was interviewed recently as quoted the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" idiom.  I wonder if Dimebag would now be alive if the attacker had only a knife.

If he was that determined to kill him, I'm pretty sure he'd still be dead if the guy only had a bat or something. Guns are only a tool, not the killer.

That I don't agree with. Injure perhaps but the venue security would have been able to intervene with anything short of a gun.

Guns allow people to kill people more efficiently.

regardless of the tools efficiency... left on it own a gun is a useless chunk of metal (and perhaps some plastic)
