Apple to drop sub-$500 Mac bomb at Expo

Recommended Posts

you know i migh actually get one of these. someone quote me on that cause i have been a devote pc user since windows 3.1 and i got an ipod for xmas and i dunno, i feel like i might actually get one. i have plenty of old monitors laying around so that wouldnt be an issue with me so im realy thinking bout this. Ill still get a powerbook for college when that time comes but this i might actually get, like for school oriented stuff so i can use my pc strictly for gaming. This will be interesting...

1.25Ghz G5 supposedly, but because it's running on OS X there really isn't a basis of comparison coming from another operating system. I found my iBook fast when I got it, and it was only a 900Mhz G3!

G5? In the news post it said G4.

Goddamn I'd buy that :|

Its a white box.   If it had a say... a Radio Shack logo would it still be cool?

But it's not a white box. If it looked like that with a radio shack box then of course it'd still look as nice.

^The allure of a Mac is the design and os. For students who are looking for a cheap mac, this is definately the way to go.

What's wrong with the emac?

I don't understand the purpose of this new mac machine. Apple trying to be more like PC. Whatever happened to "think different?" It's more like "think like dell" now.

Isn't the whole idea of people are trying to get away from PCs when they purchase an all in one mac computer?

The eMac is ugly, and some people would like to use an LCD.

This is great! An excuse to buy another computer .. need to learn OS X anyway. I was considering buying a powerbook, but since I already have a laptop I didn't see the point. This is the perfect fit -- I'll buy a KVM switch for my desktop/iMac box. Hopefully this is reality and not just a rumor ;)

I thought the G5 chip is cheaper to manufacture than the G4s...isn't it?

The problem with using a G5 is all the increased cooling is going to push the price up not to mention the supply constraints, the G4 runs cooler and as far as i know there is no problems in supply.

As for the 64bit sacrifice its no biggie, for a starter system i highly doubt anyone will need 64bit support unless they are doing big dbase work or intense 3D or CAD those and other big memory hogging apps are the only things that need 64bitness, 32bit is much better for most apps.

Im thinking that this move on Apple's part if in fact it is true (thinksecret do have a good record mind you) could be geared more towards the corporate market rather than trying to up the userbase of home Mac's, not that it would hurt and may have that what i use at work i have at home halo effect, Apple is eagerly trying to get into enterprise and education and at the moment they have some good offerings on the server and storage side but they don't yet have a decently priced client system and maybe this is it.

If the gpu is atleast a 64mb 5200ultra like in the imacs and not the 32mb 9200 then I might jump on this. I used to think that the 1.25ghz powerbook was fine for speed, and thought about getting a single 1.25 g4 tower fo awhile. Now I have to decide whether or not I want to break the bank for a dual G5, or just get osx and keep my pc with ease. If they allow you to upgrade to a 1.5 or 1.67ghz g4 for a price then I am sold on this (as long as I can keep it under 1k with the upgrades). If not then I will have more to think about :).

    • On xiaomi hyperos there's also an option to disable google assistant. I've got everything disabled. Only thing I do have installed is a web wrapped for duck.ai which claims to let you use various AIs anonymously
    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
    • Looks like no official TBW rating, which should be a required listing in my opinion for sites like Amazon (hell, put it on the box too.)
