Well, I like the look of it (it's so dinky and cute :D), and the specs seem capable enough, but I doubt I'll be getting one any time soon.

If I didn't already have a G5 PM, I'd jump at the chance to get a mini :)

Definitely persuading the parents to buy this to replace my old PC that I handed down to them when I got my very first Mac. My dad loves the iLife applications and is growing tired of Windows. He's always trying to use my PowerBook. :p

Nope, I can do everything I need quickly and efficiently enough on my PC already, and I prefer the broader choice of both hardware and software, with the hardware often at a lower price as well. I'm not the guy who cares too much about design and there's not much in Windows that can't look pretty IMHO either. ;) I'll have my hands full with the developments on Longhorn this year anyway. :D

As for a media center it's interesting though, however I currently have no immediate need of one. If I decide to get one in 6 months or more, I'll get a good one then instead and get more value for money.

Well, I voted yes because I ordered one, but I cancelled my order because my step-dad called me and asked me if I wouldn't be better off with a powerbook... well sure... hehe

So I'm getting a powerbook from my step-dad instead

yes i'm getting one. as a pc user who has never had the cash to drop on a mac, i'm stoked to be able to use one that has some semi-decent components for a semi-decent price. just waiting for tiger to drop before my wallet does the same.

Yep, I'm getting one. As to when, that depends on cash flow and credit card balances. But my push is to have one in the next 4 months.

Regardless, I've been a Mac user since 1985, with my first Mac (Fat Mac). But the business world and day job turned me into a PC guy, where I've spent most of the last 18 years on. But, I've always had some sort of Mac. Currently, a Umax clone with 6gb hdd and 64Mb of RAM running OS 9.1.

I'm sold on a cool little machine that won't have the rampant spyware b.s. and constant updates that I need to check for. At home, i don't get paid to fight viruses and stamp out spyware. I'd much rather have a machine I can turn on and just use.

The Mac Mini fits the bill. It may even replace my PC, but not right away. Only once I get enough $$ to get Virtual PC and more RAM to get XP on the Mac.

The only reason why my PC runs smooth is because I spend a good deal of time running anti virus, spyware zappers and other s/w on a twice weekly basis.

But even with all of that, I still get the odd "WTF!" issue that comes up.

My mini will be the 40gb model with 256mb, opting to get third party RAM and install it after purchase. A big external firewire drive will be added to the system to store everything but the OS on it.

VPC is pretty slow. don't expect to run games or anything substantial on it. for gaming, you'd be better off having a nice PC or console on the side. i'm actually considering getting a killer gaming PC to complement my Powerbook.

as for the mini mac, my dad's looking to replace our last PC in the house since it's getting on his and my mom's nerves, this might be the machine he's looking for.

as for people wondering about the RAM, acording to THIS, it seems like we're allowed to get in there ourselves, as long as we don't break anything. and from the pictures, it seems like the only thing holding the case on are just a bunch of tabs, and maybe a couple of screws we're not seeing. i'm pretty sure anybody wwho's ever opened their PC can do this with little problems.

im tryin to figure out how they get a fan in there, or keep everything cool, cause it looks very cramped.  How fast is the 1.4 g4 processor that comes with it?

1.4ghz is really fast, it will glide through OS X with ease. I have a 1.3ghz powerbook and its zippy !

grrrr priced up the one i want, from the uk it would cost me 550 quid but it wud only cost like 802$ in us (420 quid).

That's your VAT killing you. Remember, the prices you see on the Apple UK store include VAT, the prices you see in the US do not include tax.

Why is it that so many people from the UK fail to realize this??????

i kind of wish it came in a different form-factor like a mini-tower or a Shuttle-esque cube design

Get three of them and stack them on top of each other, then you (roughly) have a cube. 3 x 6.5" x 6.5" x 2" = 6.5" x 6.5" x 6" (almost a perfect cube). LOL :D

It's only slightly slower than the top of the line PowerBook (1.5Ghz G4).

Its official. Im going to get a 1GB mini mac in the next days. I just want to contact apple to see if I can hace photoshop preinstalled on it

Awesome. You certainly won't regret it. (Y)

I've never heard of getting Photoshop preinstalled, but like you said you might as well give them a call.

I voted yes, but not because I would personally buy this computer. I would not go below the 20" iMac if I was going to buy a Mac (and eventually I WILL buy a Mac). The G4 is no longer suffecient for my computer needs, if you look at my sig you'll know why I say that.

My parents desperately need a new computer, and their needs are very simple. They could use a new screen but it isn't required since they wouldn't know the damn difference anyway. This is the perfect computer for them to buy.

After watching Job's keynote speech at MacWorld, I have been 100% convinced to purchase a Mac and only a Mac as my next computer. After watching that presentation, I have no reason to ever buy a non-Mac computer ever again. Software is an issue, I'd have to re-buy all of my design software, but the price is just SOOOOO worth it once you have the money saved up!

I was watching that keynote late at night literally going "wow!" and "holy crap!" and "no way!" the entire time, and I'm a total techie, so it takes a lot to impress me at this point. I was very impressed with OSX Tiger and all of the iLife apps, as well as iWork. Every single thing Jobs showed off immediately became a "must have" for me when I saw it.

Now I just have to start saving up so I can afford a ~$3000 computer!

PowerMac G5? Hell yes. I was at my sat courses today and we were in a computer lab filled with 20 Dual 2.5s all running dual displays. Awesome machines. I was thinking 20" iMac G5 vs Dual 1.8 PowerMac. I cant help but say the PowerMac. Expansion, Speed, etc etc.

/me saves up as well.

I did a side-by-side comparison of the most basic Dell Model vs. the Mac Mini. Excluding software value, yes, the Dell comes out slightly cheaper ($50 bucks or so), but when you add software value, the amount of software needed on an XP Machine (Word, PPT, etc.), and when you want all the programs like iLife 05 on your machine, it costs a lot for the XP Machine. Even after adding iWork, the Mac comes out cheaper by 200 bucks or so, or something like that.

This is only from a consumer level though, from an education pricing standpoint, a little less margin, but still a considerable one.,

    • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
    • The only difference here is that you think you came up with these reasons. You didn't. These age old fearmongering lies (that were NEVER true) were funded by and the anger stoked by Putin through proxies like Farage (and later in the USA, Trump) and filtered down through the skinheads, Neonazis, etc. until it reached the uninformed, ignorant, and gullible -- never realizing they were being played for fools against their own best interests. Even now, despite all of the EVIDENCE proving that Brexit was a terrible mistake for ALL citizens of the UK and that its supporters were tricked by Putin's proxies into sabotaging their own nation, you're still here defending these well-known lies as if they were ever true. Not only are they not true. They NEVER were. So, when are you going to realize that you were lied to and actually get angry at the liars and charlatans who lied to you, instead of blaming the innocent people they lied to you about?
