k, I didnt get to read this whole thread, so I dunno if this has been said, but Norton and Mcaffee dont stop EVERYTHING, theres a lot of thing out there that they still dont detect, if you want something thats really up to date, go with kaspersky, you cannot go wrong with it, i can assure you of that :D

Symantec corporate 8.1... allowed many trojan viruses to be installed onto my computer. It did not detect nor clean or delete. So I had lots of fun loading into console and removing files, editing registry and all the other **** to get my system back to where it once was. I had re-installed AVG Pro 7, and boom... no more worries :) I vote AVG Pro 7. If Microsoft bought Grisoft, that should be reason enough for anyone running windows to use it.

By the way, most virus creators make viruses now so that they are stealth to most of symantec's antivirus programs because most of the consumers out there use norton either by bundle with new system or because at least a couple of their friends use it. It is by far one of the most unsafe antivirus, first is naturally, Mcafee.

I currently use Mcafee Home v8 and think its great. I tried using AVG (both free and paid) but I found the program to be a little 'outdated' looking, it reminds me of programs i used to run on win95 ;). However i made the switch to Mcafee and it seems ok on resources and I like the system notifications way better.

I think the opposite about McAfee VS8.

I don't like it as much as 7. Granted 8 looks better but in VS8 we lost whitelisting of scripts, exclusions, scheduled scanning options, logging, ability to completely turn of alerts for true silent operation, and gained the security center(plug for software you don't own), a buggy activeX base, and the program is tied to an email address(not that big of a deal).

So while 7 wasn't pretty I think it was better.

VirusScan Enterprise 7.1 smokes McAfee VS 8 in so many ways, but the main one is less impact on system resources...like I said earlier, after running all of the incarnations of Norton up to the latest Symantec Corp. version, giving AVG, Panda, Kapersky and Bit-Defender a run for their money, I ended up with VirusScan Enterprise as the far and away over-all winner in my book...

Why people still use NAV in the majority speaks volumes about how misled people can be!

the main reason people use NAV in actual retail is that there aren't many well name options on the store shelf. McAfee's Consumer product is an absolute monster on system resources causing 2.4GHz machines to feel like 200Mhz in situations i've had to work on as recently as last week. Removing McAfee's suite of (cr)Apps made an amazing change in the performance of the machine. I still personally use Symantec Corp 8.1 but its hard to recommend that to a customer when we stock it in 5 seat licenses and they only have one machine.

So, have you run "VirusScan Enterprise 7.1"?

If so, how would you compare it to "Symantec Corp 8.1"?

BTW, does Symantec Corp 8.1 have LiveUpdate or can you bypass that madness and update manually?

Thx

I am extremely cheap, :D

So when my subscripton to NAV2003 expired, I looked for a freeware alternative

I thought of AVG first, but discovered that they have been having problems with their updates lately, and it took me several tries just to download the prog. I don't like to think that my AV was not updating!

After more searching, I found:

http://www.avast.com/i_idt_153.html

I installed it today. It scans my e-mails OK, and a full system scan went OK as well. The scan is not any faster than NAV, but it is not any worse.

And It is FREE :p

    • If you are willing to go to approx $200, then as mentioned in your other thread I think a refurbished Pixel 8 will be a great deal that will last you for years. I recently recommended that to someone at work, he was on a strict £200 budget, which got him an excellent conditioned refurbished Pixel 8 here. He's since told me its the best phone he's ever had and feels its a massive upgrade over his old Samsung A series device. I don't know the sites which deal in refurbished devices in the US, however I’m sure you will have some options like we do here. Failing that Ebay is also quite good in my experience. If you wanted something a bit cheaper, then you could maybe go for an older Pixel 7, these will still get security updates until the end of 2027. Even after that you have good third party OS support from LineageOS. It doesn't have to be a Pixel though, you can buy many older devices for a good deal that would be better than a new $100 phone and flash LineageOS to them: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/
    • I don't use one drive, but then I don't use any cloud storage, not even Icloud on my mac. If I did use cloud storage, then I would not use One drive, not because there is anything wrong with it, but because I can use Icloud. The only reason I see to use one drive is if your job requires you to have access to it
    • Not built in, which is not a bad thing. There are ways of adding cloud storage to it, Dropbox is the most well know that also have a client for Linux, but there are others.
    • My advice, dont use teams, use the web version if possible. https://teams.microsoft.com/v2/
