I work with viruses and security frequently. I watched the development of an extremely malicious trojan called Netdevil, it gained the popularity of Subseven with the power of HDKP. It took Norton Antivirus 3 months to be able to detect it, Kaspersky found it in about a week. And norton STILL doesn't detect it when its compressed with UPX, it hardly detects ANY UPX'd viruses. Kaspersky on the other hand finds them all.

NetDevil is dead now, so no need to worry about it, but there are more malicious ones than that out there, and Norton is never able to see them. Remember that most trojans will be self-extracting compressed in some form, bound to an exe, and silent in the processes. They can sneak past firewalls, and can hide in the startup of the registry (bind to explorer.exe). You aren't safe without Kaspersky.

if you aint lying im gonna get kapersky today

i warn you though, kaspersky can be a little heuristic.  For example, if you try to pirate it, it will automatically crash any browser that searches for "kaspersky" and "crack" or "serial".

oh :o

RIIIGHT. i love that antivirus, but i doubt it does it.

I guess the prevoius post is just to stop you from pirating the antivirus

you said you are getting it, get it from the store ;)

well then maybe it was just a coincidence i had a pirated copy and my browser suddenly closed without error every time i tried to crack it. I have a legal copy now anyway, it's one of the few softwares thats worth the buy.

Yeah they do. According to one of Kaspersky's US distribution partners buying Kaspersky now will still allow you to use version 5 when it's released. Apparrantly you can use your key on any version, just the virus definitions will stop after 1 year. I like that approach. Of course that thinking may change but it makes sense since you can use your code on some of thier older releases as well. So I guess if you're thinking of getting it go for it.

Also Spyder: Told ya so. :) Thanks for checking though I would have liked to be wrong, and would have welcomed being wrong and having logs right under my nose.

macodin, as one of the more umm 'employable' people here, you may find this site of interest (if you dont already read it) :

http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/

It's a very good early warning site that often posts info that is considered a bit to opinionated / unsubstatiated for the formal advisories.

cant you just manually update? theres an area under downloads where you can.

Eh manual updates suck in my opinion. Granted it's just my opinion but of all the malware out there that has a chance of getting me it's a fast spreading worm, not a virus or trojan, and in that case I need my scanner to be as up to date as possible. I'm not too worried about actually getting a trojan because they don't spread as easily and I don't do anything that would really help me get one, same with virii, but now that I'm on dial-up I am again a target for these worms that target OS vulnerabilities and stuff like that. I think a trojan is the worst thing to get just because of the info they can gleam from you, but I think worms actually have the highest chance of getting through. So for me if my AV program doesn't auto-update it isn't worth it.

You should be able to manually update kaspersky though it was a while back when I trialed it though so I can't remember for sure. Whether you can manually update come version 5 I don't know. Personally I wouldn't be suprised to see manual updates eventually become extinct so AV comapnies can better keep people in the subscription service.

You don't have to just go with Kaspersky either, there's also F-secure, Extendia AV Pro, and AntiVirusKit that use the Kaspersky engine as well.

Jon - Thanks for the site I had never seen it before. I get advisories from symantec still, along with trend-micro since I signed up for them so long ago and just stick with those even though I use a different AV program now, but I like the blog approach, which gives more than just the name, threat leval, and removal instructions, I actually like to hear an opinion behind it so I may check that site out every once in a while. Since I'm not in the computer industry I can slack off on my virus alerts somewhat lol.

No NOD 32 doesn't scan outgoing mail.

The thinking behind it is that since the resident scanner is always running that as far as they can tell you're not infected, so scanning the outgoing mail for the same virii that the resident scanner looks for is redundant.

Gonna put in my 2 cents into this thread.

I used AVG for awhile, it was giving me some very odd problems though, real slow downs with certain progarms and windows when opening them (MSN messenger, system properties) would wait like 30 seconds first time I did a few thing, then would be fine, nothign too big, was overall a good program.

Norton 2004, way too bloated, I prefer 2k3 over 2k4, I had a friend buy it thinking it was newer so better, that he had to buy a new version every year, poor guy.

I am using Symantec Anti-Virus 8.1.1 Corporate right now, it is very good, I have tried mcafee corporate 7.1 also, both are great, I would try to get corporate editions of any anti virus program, if you can get a deal from your work or education on the price, or other means  its worth trying them out, the 'home' editions of anti virus programs these days are totally SUCKING (ie norton 2k4, mcafee 8, etc).

It seems like AVG's no longer the fad. Earlier on in this thread, everyone was very supportive of the product, now it seems to have slipped away while other products like NOD32 are getting more attention. I didn't even know NOD32 existed before this thread. Too bad, it's not free like AVG :(

PC-Cillin 2004 Internet Security is amazing. I have tried downloading some virus as well modifying some old ones. It detects all the viruses, network, viruses as well has a very good firewall. It is the best package for Internet security in my opinion.

    • Let's goooooooo! I've been loving the entries so far! I still have to finish Rebirth (things have been busy!)! Excited for this next installment.
    • "Revelation?" I was hoping for this episode to be called "Reunion". Oh, well... In a related note, the Final Fantasy VII compilation has received an EC entry, short for Ever Crisis. For those who don't know, it already had AC, BC, CC, and DC entries, short for Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. I hope it doesn't get an FC entry becaude that would be a freakin' crisis.
    • Uh, after intense testing now, 'Samsung Browser' is not the best one outside of 'Microsoft Edge' after all. Opera Air is that. It has "some" bloat, but it's far less than what both Microsoft Edge and Brave browser have.
