FOR EVERYONE WHO DOESN'T THINK THE 9200 DOESN'T SUPPORT CORE IMAGE, READ THIS

Core Image is 100% supported on the 9200, the RIPPLE effect in Dashboard has been disabled for performance issues. It can be hacked back in, don't ask me how. Please share the information for the people who keep whining "GRRRR CORE IMAGE ISNT SUPPORTED ON MY NEW IBOOK/MACMINI" etc. k THANX byee.  :ninja:

Because Core Image can utilize the CPU when the GPU doesn't know how to do an effect. The ripple effect requires full Pixel Shader 2 compliance. That's something the 9200 doesn't have, so it has to offload to the CPU. Apple figured if you don't need the effect, don't waste valuable resources doing it.

I work at a hotel and we get lots of European guests (mostly Germans and Brits).  Many of them seem amazed that Mississippi isn't all farmland with slaves working in the fields.  The ignorance goes both ways.

ATI doesn't make a Mac compatible version of the AIW. Some PC video cards can be flashed to work in a Mac, but I don't think the AIW is one of those that can. Do a Google search on "Mac ATI flash" and you'll find lots of info on the subject. However, to answer your question; yes, if you put a CoreImage-supported video card in an older Mac (even as far back as the first AGP PowerMac G4's), you'll get full CoreImage support. The only problem you might have is what version of AGP the card is, and what version a particular model of Mac supports.

For any other ADC Select members like myself here, I just noticed this note in my ADC News e-mail:

The ADC Mailing for May 2005, containing official released versions of Mac OS X v10.4 and Xcode 2.0, shipped on April 29. Allow 3-10 days for delivery.

So it looks like most of us will be getting our copies this week sometime!! :D

What would you recommend for a TV tuner card in exchange for the AIW then? I'm shooting to output the video from my Mac to the TV for games and other things. Shame the AIW isn't supported.

Dictionary/thesaurus system-wide

What are the prerequisites for this? The reason I'm asking is that I got this to work during the weekend, but now the system no longer responds to cmd-ctrl-D. It just does nothing.

I looked in Keyboard Shortcuts and it's still enabled and it's still set to cmd-ctrl-D, it just does nothing. Dictionary.app itself is working, because if I right-click and choose 'look up', it displays the panel right there just as if I cmd-ctrl-D had worked (I set it to do so in the Dictionary.app prefs).

I have no idea what I might have done to deactivate this functionality. Does this still work for everyone else?

I'm on a clean install off a formatted hard drive.

edit: All right, this is just strange. I've just done a test of cmd-ctrl-D using and comparing it to the output of ps.

Before I press cmd-ctrl-D, there is no process PopupDictDaemon, but after pressing it, it shows in ps. So, PopupDictDaemon is doing something, but just not actually showing the popup. It terminates itself after a few minutes.

Most ATI video cards on the Mac will send video to your TV. You seem confused, you don't need a TV tuner card for that. Those are for watching TV on your computer.

Well 10.4.1 will be a free upgrade to Tiger, from Software Update. If you buy Tiger after the 10.4.1 most likely it won't already be in the package....

Yep, they wont update the DVDs until about 10.4.5.

I mean, I rarely need to search for files on the Mac because I know where everything is (I'm somewhat tidy) - so Spotlight won't be that big for me.

Dashboard? Well I don't use any sort of widget program anyway. Same with Mail 2/Safari - I use Firefox/Thunderbird.

Don't use iChat, won't use iChat AV. Same also applies to Applescript/Automator.

The new Aqua menubar I don't really like, I love Panther's look too much.

10.3.9 is very fast for me at the moment and configured the way I like it.

Meh, I might hop down to the Apple Store in London and play around with it.

Radish, just some more thoughts about Spotlight. I keep my system very tidy too, but with Spotlight I can still open files fast than it would take to navigate to them. I can open Applications faster than it would take to open a Finder window, open the Apps folder, and find the correct one. Not only that, the e-mail searching is an extrodinaryly great timesaver - as it's fast than opening the proper folder and navigating down the list.

With widgets, I never used them just because I didn't want my desktop cluttered. But two things have led me to like Dashboard - one, it stays out of the way. For some people they might like to look at the widgets all the time, but I don't need to check the weather constantly an can just look once in a while. Also, unlike previous widget programs, most of the default widgets are actually useful and offer additional functionality instead of just rehashing a battery meter or wifi meter, etc.

So these are just some things to think about. The new Tiger interface, with its flaws, does grow on you, especially the menu select color which seems more modern compared to the more muted color in Panther.

i personally don't like the look of tiger at all. that's why i am happy they updated shapeshifter so quick.

but overall tiger feels a lot faster to me. it's worth the upgrade in my opinion. spotlight is pretty sweet though. i never thought i would use it either, but it does make things a lot easier and the searching is rediculously fast.

I have a few comments after using Tiger for 3 days.

I did an upgrade installation over 10.3.8 and I only had one small problem with the GPGMail bundle which was quickly dealt with and I haven't restarted since the mandatory reboot after the installation.

Tiger is fast. I am amazed at how well multitasking is handled now. I was able to watch a 720p h.264 trailer while encoding another movie into h.264 and the system was able to manage and prioritize tasks accordingly so that when I played the HD trailer it played fine without any noticeable dropped frames and the encoding process was given a low priority (from what I could tell). I could also call Dashboard without lag. I think this is pretty amazing, I can throw pretty much anything at my PowerBook now. Sure it sounded like a LearJet about to catch on fire and the CPU usage was at a constant 100%, but I was never bothered with lag or a beachball.

Dashboard and Spotlight are stunning. Dashboard is incredibly stylish and that ripple effect never fails to impress. :cool:

Spotlight took about an hour and a half to index my drive. I use it sporadically but it has certainly helped me do some tasks more efficiently.

I love the new Mail and its updated interface. Once again, it seems a lot faster than Panther. I do miss the "status bar" that told me what Mail was doing at the time though.

iChat seems the same to me since I don't use any of the AV features but I did notice that when the other person in the conversation logs off the text box does not close automatically like it did in Panther.

Now that I think of it, those flaws are immaterial compared to those in other operating systems. Lucky us. :p

Edit: I just noticed that iSync now works with my Razr V3 over Bluetooth. :woot:

(PC Mag gave iMac G5 also the best rating)

This upgrade will be known for the speed it brings to daily tasks, as well as for the usefulness and creative design of its many improvements (Apple lists over 200 of them). While a few standout additions are grabbing the headlines, it's the systemwide improvements that will thrill the Mac faithful.
