[Definitive] Xbox 360 Thread

The new four-trigger controller actually looks pretty good!

I think I might like it better than the 4 horizotally laid out buttons on the back of the ps2 controllers.

yah i have always hated the horizontal layout of the shoulder buttons on the ps2. i have always found the nintendo controllers to be more ergonomic of the big 3. hopefully this xbox controller will be a step in the right direction.

this may be already known but will the xbox controllers be wireless out of the box?

Is there any word on Xbox 1 compatbility with Xbox360? I read one post which said that if the optional 20Gb hard drive is in the console, only then can Xbox 1 games be played in the new console. Anyone have anything further?

All Xbox 360's will include the 20GB drive. No official word yet on backwards compatibility.

The architecture doesn't really fit. You're going from Celeron to PowerPC processors...

I have a new quote I got from my local newspaper (atleast it is new to me):

It will be the best CD and DVD Player money can buy... and you won't have to buy an extra remote to make it work. I have to say, making people buy a remote control to access the DVD Player on the Xbox was one of the stupidest things we ever did.

they added the ultimate lazy feature to the 360

the Xbox Guide Button lets you turn the system on and off without ever leaving the couch.

now the fat lil kiddes will be uber fat

but i like the button except when you will sneeze and turn the damn thing off

Is this  the same as this?

It looks like it. Therefore it wasnt a fake, just not final design.

The silver one has rounded edges where the ends of the "X" are, but on the white one the "X" is straight

Damn close though, wouldn't doubt that they're closely designed

Seems there is. :)

I havent seen this mentioned, but for anyone that wants to know, Gamestop is taking preorders. I know it says they arent on their website, but I called the store and they did the preorder. They also have a list of about 20 games that you can reserve as well. :)

I used to think Paul Thurrott was a moron... but now I'm 100% he really is a moron... just take a look at this quote from his "WinInfo Short Takes: Week of May 16".

I do have a theory about backwards compatibility. When you consider the numbers, it becomes clear that Microsoft is targeting the wider world of gaming with Xbox 360 and not just its existing Xbox 1 users. For example, there are 80 million Sony PlayStation 2 users worldwide, compared to just 20 million Xbox users. If Microsoft is serious about luring the other 80 percent of the gaming world to the Xbox 2, it has to worry about a lot more than just backwards compatibility. In fact, one could make a compelling argument that Microsoft should skip out on the compatibility all together and simply make the next Xbox as powerful and exciting as it can be. After all, PlayStation 2 users are still going to need their old console when they upgrade, potentially, to an Xbox 360. Why spend a lot of time and effort trying to support the original Xbox functionality in the 360, when that market is so much smaller than that of the PS2? Just a thought.

Yeah, but that's only talking about Xbox Live. The key line that might indicate games are actually compatible is:

If you are playing an Xbox game on Live you will be able to compete against people playing that same game on Xbox 2.

This indicates that you will be able to play the same games on Xbox 1 & 2, and since we can safely assume Xbox360 games will not work with Xbox 1( :woot: ), then Xbox 1 games 'ought to work with 360.

As for the architecture difference, that also occured to me but I would imagine the immense power of the 360 would enable an emulation mode to exist and still run as fast as the original Xbox. Remember, just because Mac OS X won't run on x86, getting XP onto a PPC platform is relatively easy. And I believe the Playstation 2 actually runs an emulation mode for Playstation 1 games, with no detremental effect.

And lastly, I think it would be foolish if Microsoft decided to ignore their existing catalogue of games. Paul Thurrott talks about the Sony 80 million share without considering that many PS2 purchasers will have factored in the absolutely collosal back catalogue that extists for PS1 yet would be compatible with their new console as a reason for purchase. I see no reason why backward compatbility should technically hamper the new Xbox360, but simply make it more desireable to existing Xbox owners. I mean if you're gonna lose all you games anyway, why not go for a PS3? Suddenly, a potential inccentive for an Xbox360 purchase has disappeared for no real reason.

Anyway, just my ?0.02:DD

You do realize that you just stated he's a moron for no reason at all (other than bolding points you disagree with), and doing absolutely nothing to defend your point? Maybe you should give some kind of argument if you're going to call him stupid. Just a thought.

he called him a moron based on his assumptions.

He disagreed with it and hence called him a moron.

Simple as that.

What I personally didn't understand was this sentence

"After all, PlayStation 2 users are still going to need their old console when they upgrade, potentially, to an Xbox 360"

What does it mean? MS shouldn't focus on backwards compatibility because PS2 owners will still keep their PS2s. (so he's assuming that all gamers have a PS2 and will be switching?) or is he saying that there is no use for XB2 to have backwards compatibility because people will have a PS2 that they'll want to play with anyway.

I think that logic is flawed.

Might be me though.

You do realize that you just did the same? you went out crying out loud by defending the poor and the weak and giving no argument whatsoever... :p

anyways, it's a common knowledge among the gaming community that the success of the PS2 was based on the big amount of PS1 users migrating over the new platform and taking advantage of the huge library of PS1 games. games like Fantavison as a launch tittle for the PS2? give me a brake! what about games like Halo, PGR or DOA3 as a launch tittles?

Sony was the first company to offer backwards compatibility for its console and it prove to be a recipe for success by giving the users the chance to play their old games on their new platform while giving the developers the chance to learn and create games for the next generation.

on the other hand you can see what has happen to Nintendo and Sega, they never offered backwards compatibility on their previous platforms and users where forced to either throw away their old games or keep both consoles and have to option to play their favorite games. now Nintendo said that for the first time they are going to offer backwards compatibility on revolution. thats a really smart move on Nintendos part because it warrant them to keep a big part of their actual user base.

if this is the trend that has prove to be successful why should Microsoft pass on it? just because Mr. Thurrott "I hate Xbox and MSN" says so?... I don't think so. Microsoft commitment to the user includes hearing what their customers have to say and they'd said they want to have backwards compatibility on the new Xbox and thats what is going to happen unless Microsoft wants to start all over again; conquering the market, competing with the actual Xbox and the offerings from the other competitors.

"Just a thought."

right, you got my point young padawan... :p

I know the controllers will be, but is the entire unit going to be Wireless as well?

Meaning will it be on my network through my wiress router out of the box or are you still going to have to be a wireless adapter?
