$1,800 for a blu-ray player even at half the price it $900. And it not about sony being stupid, how many bought a psp and are disapointed with games on the system, the ds is outselling them in japan. (i think) I have a PSP and haven't played it in months.

MS isn't doing a whole lot better with the x360, the launch titles haven't looked the most appealing, outside of one or two (for me at least), Japan gave it a big yawn, and merrily went on playing with their DS', yet in NA, the x360 and PSP have sold well, even with weak game libraries. Both systems might be picking up steam in the next few months, but if that cheat loader hadn't been released for GTA:LCS, I'd probably be bored of it by now. Waiting on Katamari Demancy, Winning Eleven, and I'll see how the Syphon Filter beta goes too, but if I see another racing game for the PSP, I'll scream.

As for the PS3, if it gets released at a price higher than $450-500, it'll become another 3D0. $400 is pushing it IMO too. Games have to be pretty bad ass at that point; after awhile, it's like buying a another PC.

If Sony wants to win it will not make its console more than $500! Never beleave them...I already went there for the 360 to see how much it was and when it is coming out they said in 2006 an it would cost $500...it was BS!

everyone is ignoring that it is a blu-ray player! this has to add to the cost of the system, i don't care i'm still getting it but i doubt it will cost $400 unless they take a huge loss. i mentioned the $1,800 for a blu-ray player and it's only a player, even at half it comes to 900 so i don't think $5-800 is out of the question, think about macs and how expenive they are but people still buy them because they know what they are getting. its the same with ps3.

to me, it seems like Sony is trying to do with the PS3 what they did with the PSP... use a "game console" to push a propietary media format (UMD and Blu-Ray) to make a profit out of their music/movie divisions...

I read somewhere that there's a 3-1 ratio on the PSP (3 movies for each game), and if you pay attention it's quite a good deal for Sony cuz they already have a huge library of movies (most of them suck but thats not the point) becuase all they have to do is just reencode the movies to fit them on the UMD, no extras, no flashy menus no nothing. but on the games side they need to invest to create the game and everything that's involved on the game creation process.

you can bet on Sony doing the same on the PS3, putting the Blu-Ray drive in there and go nuts releasing BD movies and forget about the freaking games... :s

There is one thing that we can be sure of, the longer Sony doesn't give the release date the farther back the date of PS3 will be. I went to EB and they said you can order systems 6 months in advance, so I'm guessing at least May June but They must announce it soon.

Well, wasn't a big reason for the PS2's success in Japan as a DVD player, since it was cheaper than most DVD players at the time? As for the PSP, I just can't figure out why people pay $20-30 for a movie when they can get the same DVD for half? Even with recoding, just buy a big MS Duo and save a little in the long run. The screen on the PSP just isn't good enough to be a dedicated movie player and the storage is way too small to be a DAP.

I think Sony will have to keep it around $500 to compete with MS, and Nintendo. And I hope EB Games will start taking pre-orders here soon. One of my friends from EB Games said they should right after E3, if not before.

The cost of that Pioneer Elite player shouldn't be a factor of the cost of other Blu-Ray players. It's their Elite line. Those are just damned expensive. Take a look at their $1000 DVD player. They don't come cheap.

:D My link was to a $1000 DVD player. Pioneer's Elite players are pricy, so their expensive Blu-Ray player is expected. No doubt that the Samsung is still very expensive at $1000. Expect both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray tech to drop in price when the holographic discs hit the market.

Lol typically a company spends many many times more to "advertise" a product then to actually make it. So that goes to show you.

So the price goes waaaayy up and that still doesn't guarentee they make much of any profit.

We won't go into major rehauls of the factories and their equipment and re-training labor workers. :p

Personally, I think in a few years time.. the winner of the console war will end up being the multimedia PC.

These prices are insane and the majority of games coming out the last few years are just clones of each other..

Just need to nail down copy protection on the PC...

Everyone keeps talking about how expensive blu-ray is....that is how much it is NOW....give it a few months and all of their chipset production will go down in price...Nvidia will have already made newer cards by then and will probably have a great yield ...Sony isn't rushing like Microsoft did so I'm sure they will have plenty of products ready to be shipped....just look at how fast LCD/HDTV's have gone down in price recently
