Google Talk website OPEN!

Ok I tried voice with a friend ...both using iChat

tried these configs so far --->

iChat - iChat = IM + Voice

iChat - gTalk = IM only

Adium - iChat = IM only

Adium - gTalk = IM only

unless they get voice working cross-platform....can't see a point in "switching" since other basic features like smileys are missing as well

sorry if this has been asked before, but what theme are they using in their screenshots?  it looks like a 3rd party visual style or windowblinds....

Actually, that is how Google Talk looks like.

It also seems to have a little gmail checker, got a notification when I got an email!

 i realized that after i installed it. i swear they used somebody's theme though...i've seen lots of stuff very similar to that.

I agree this first release is slim on features, but it is the first beta release. Gmail didn't even have text formatting for quite a while. I'm sure they'll be adding all the features we EXPECT from an IM client, also NOT add the things others may have that nobody needs. I really hope they keep the minimalistic UI, I like it a lot. They really do need to have text formatting and support smilies. Smilies are part of the culture now, no reason not to support that.

From their FAQ it's obvious they are working on interoperability with the other IM services as well. It does have a "recent chat history" option, and I am sure this will be expanded upon in the next release. These ARE the people that made Gmail and GDS, after all. Indexing and searching of your Google Talk conversations will be a key feature in the future, I'm sure.

Wow this is terrible! First and foremost; don't get my wrong I love:

1. Google Search

2. Gmail

3. Picasa

4. Blogger

5. Google Earth

This is crap. It is only for Gmail users?! None of my friends have a clue what Gmail is! I was really hoping for AIM interoperability. This doens't even seem like an IM client. I guess it isn't really. I guess I just pegged it wrong from the start. This is not an alternative to AIM or MSN. The interface is gorgeously simple, but what you see is what you get. I know this is a beta, but I can't see this getting much different.

I really don't see the need for this. If you wanna IM, use AIM or MSN. If you want to talk (voice) to friends, use AIM, MSN, or a VOIP service. Google Talk seems like an akward go-between.

I certainly can't see merely getting friends to sign up for a new IM client that is no better than AIM, but furthermore getting them to sign up for Gmail? Pfft.

I was really looking forward to this, I guess I was just expecting a different product.

I moved to MSN a long time ago, because it was simple and didn't have a bunch of bloat. Corse now it's VERY bloated. I like the looks of this. Back to simple. I hope they add other IM services to this.. that would be great. I doubt MSN will be, but I can dream.

I like simplicity. The problem with google talk is this:

95% of the people on msn messenger have hotmail/msn accounts. Even if they allow me to add msn users (not likely for a while) there won't be much point as it will take very long for them to add formatting for text, emoticons, video conversations and all the things that msn currently offers. (i'm basing it on how long it took gmail to add the formatting things). To use it now, would be pointless for me.

    • Absolutely NOBODY has suggested such a conclusion. I am affirming the sober reality check that AV2's overall market adoption will take longer than AV1's adoption rate -- which, by the way, is the whole point of the article! While PCI-SIG is productive (on paper), other WGs have created all sorts of confusing progress plans that consumers have tuned-out of their improvements... HTML/W3C, USB, HDMI, BT, WIFI (ieee802.11) as a few other groups where spec naming conventions, split progress paths, overlapping ambitions... I'm not critiquing the AV specs group; I'm simply affirming that adoption for AV2 faces headwinds beyond the macroeconomics of it all.
