[Contest] $100 for Site Layout and Logo

Question

Uptifree.com Contest:

The past couple weeks I have been redesigning the entire backend of the site. Now that its just about done, its time for the front end. I'm not any good with graphic design, so I thought I would offer the opportunity for someone to make some money!!!

Payment:

Winner will receive $100.

Payment will be made via PayPal Only.

Guidlines:

Try to keep things simple.

Nothing hard to navigate.

Currently, I'm open to all color schemes. As long as it's not bright pink/lime green, etc.

Must be original, no copycat designs.

Must have spaces for Google ads.

Winner must be willing to help with other pages on the site (besides initial index page).

No coding required. This is for the images only.

Timeframe:

This contest will end on Tuesday March 7th, 2006 at 9:00 AM PST. At that time, no further entries will be accepted.

Picking the Winner:

Once the contest is over (see above), I will start a poll. At that time Neowin members will be able to vote for their favorite design. This does not guarantee that the most voted design will win, as I will pick the winner but the poll will weigh heavily on my decision.

Current Mockup:

Here is the current mockup of the redesign. So keep this in mind when making your design.

Final Words:

Good luck to all, and may the best design win!

Concept 1 is really nice. I like the logo. Great idea with the "i".

Could you maybe mix the 2 of them? Take concept 1 and remove the news box, then center the upload form table and change "upit" to "upload." I think that would look nice.

Quick enough loading times ? ;)

On your site you have ads just under the 'Upload' button .. on purpose ?

Also i think my monitor might be too bright therefore you lot not seeing what i see .. can you tell me if you think the design is too dark, for eg. the shadow on the 'Host Image' button is very subtle .. tell me if you think its too dark a shadow .. thanks :)

This one is great :woot:

Easy on eyes and nice colors :)

Good work mail

since you have interest to remove the news section i have decided to follow up with a more simplistic mock up, sorry it doesnt really follow the mockup, if that is possible. by the way yes i do some html/css

I like that one too but maybe you can change the colors

White with blue will be so cool with that amazing logo

Another two by me. Based on the design you've got now, as I think that's better.

If you have the 'Add more image's' button, how is it going to work? Is it going to add another textbox and browse button underneath, or another way? Either way, how are links goin to be provided for them all? If you want to give BB Codes, and such, which you probably will, the page will become messy. That's why I think the single file upload is better...

Anyway, here they are, one in the colours I used before, one in white/blue. On the menu in the white/blue one, the first item shows the current page, the 2nd, 3rd and 5th are unhovered/normal items, and the 4th is when an item is hovered.

My Mockups :

v2:

Colors/buttons etc. can be customized to your needs

Very nice. Both versions look the same to me though. What's the difference? Also, as stated before, I don't think its good to point out a big box for advertisements. They need to be subtle. :) The yellow stands out a bit too much. Can you do anything with that?

Well, after considering the advice you guys gave me, here's concept 3, combinin my previous 2 and trying out a new colour scheme, let me know what you think :) :

I really like this design, but it need some more color somewhere and the bottom is too dark. Also, the text boxes are huge! Is this a new fad? LOL.

The first one is too dark, I'm not sure I care for it too much.

The second one is brilliant! The check mark is a great idea and having the submit button with the logo inside is nice too. Colors are great! It's simple and clean.

To answer your questions:

The "Add more images" link will add another text box, browse button and delete button just below the current one. I have not yet decided on how many I will allow for anonymous users, probably 5. The table and page will expand downward to allow this. When you are finished uploading, you will receive code for each uploaded image and also a "Batche Code" to display ALL the images you uploaded at once. Everything will be clearly laid out with tables, text boxes, a copy button and a thumbnail of the image just above the code. All code given to you will be at the bottom of the page so it does not obstruct your view of the image. I hope this helps to clear things up. If you have any other questions, please ask away!

Just thought id add that if you spend a lot of time coming up with a really awesome design for a website, Google Adds can ruin the whole effect, esppecially IMO at the top

Excellent point. I think they will be fine at the bottom. :)

Okay, I wasn't going to bother entering this due to there being so many applicants, although I needed something to do until my TV card arrives, so I thought I'd create a little something. You wanted simplistique, and it's what I've done. Hope you like it, critique greatly welcome.

@ Past entries: All very good, although the bright blue one that was simple and had diagonal white scanlines was a bit cramped. Although all very good entries. Especially spex04, definately an uber-entry =)

Here's my design:

    • Turbo Pascal was my first real programming experience more than 30 years ago at university. I mostly taught myself from the included examples and help documentation, because the university only taught the basic syntax and philosophy of Pascal, without going deeply into Turbo Pascal’s advanced features. I still remember when I discovered that I could embed assembly language directly into Pascal code, call BIOS functions, manipulate screen memory, use mouse interrupts, and control peripherals from my programs. That opened huge doors for me. Programming back then felt really fun, direct, and close to the machine. What I loved about Pascal was its readability and the almost instant compile time. Turbo Pascal was an amazing environment, but unfortunately Turbo Pascal for Windows 3 did not feel like it fully carried that legacy forward. Later, Delphi got things back on the right track after the messy transition to TP for Windows. Sadly, Delphi suffered from years of uncertainty as it moved from Borland to CodeGear and then to Embarcadero. That instability made many developers lose confidence in it, even though Delphi itself remained a powerful and productive tool. I still work with Delphi from time to time, but I definitely miss the old days of Turbo Pascal.
    • I hope this encodes in to AV1 or AV2 as currently tiktok uses h265 and h264.
    • Qualcomm reportedly in talks to build custom video chips for TikTok parent ByteDance by Karthik Mudaliar Qualcomm is reportedly in advanced discussions to provide custom chip-design services to Chinese tech giant ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok. According to a report from Reuters, Qualcomm could be involved in designing custom silicon tailored for ByteDance's massive data-center workloads. If it goes through, the deal would make ByteDance one of Qualcomm's early anchor customers for its fastly growing custom chip-design division, For years, Qualcomm was the king of making smartphone processors and modems. The company has also been moving into the PC ecosystem and other formats such as on-device AI for Android XR headsets. However, this particular deal is about Qualcomm's custom Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). For a platform like TikTok, ByteDance needs hardware that can help it ingest, process, and serve billions of short-form videos daily. Generalised hardware is no longer the most cost-effective and efficient route, which is why ByteDance is trying to develop custom Video Processing Units (VPUs). VPUs designed specifically for ByteDance’s algorithmic needs could drastically reduce data-center power consumption and improve encoding speeds at an unprecedented scale. The underlying tech behind these processors is actually from Qualcomm's recent acquisition of AlphaWave Semi, a high-speed connectivity specialist company. By combining AlphaWave’s high-bandwidth IP with Qualcomm’s architectural expertise, the company could begin mass production by the end of 2026, if the talks go through. All this also comes at a time when U.S.-China tech relations have dwindled. Escalating trade frictions between Washington and Beijing have severely impacted the export of high-end AI chips from U.S. firms like Nvidia, AMD, and Lam Research. Yet, the Qualcomm-ByteDance discussions show that U.S. tech companies are still actively seeking growth avenues and are open to doing business with China, where regulators still permit. Reuters notes that the outcome of this deal could be uncertain, and ByteDance might also seek partners other than Qualcomm. via Reuters | Image via DepositPhotos.com
