I'm fairly sure Nintendo already stated that they will offer more traditional controllers along with the 'remote'. They need to be able to provide controllers that will be suitable for the NES, SNES, and N64 games from the Virtual Console. Also remember that the Revolution has GameCube controller ports on the side of the console. Having said that, I doubt that the USB ports will be used for plugging in controllers as they are positioned at the back of the console. I'm guessing they will be used for a USB Ethernet LAN dongle (for users who don't have a wireless LAN), or the sensing 'wand' for the Revolution controllers.
