Vista Build 5342 Released - Official Topic

I can't get my SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 working. The XP drivers don't work and there are no Vista ones available. Has anyone been able to get a Live! series card working? I know it's an old card, but it's good enough for me.

Now that all the hype is dying down and I have had a good play with Vista 5342 I can say that it is a step in the right direction.

But.. No where near as astonishingly great as most were convinced into believing.

The 64bit version is by far the most improved, while the 32bit version is still resource, performance, compatibility and device driver challenged. At best.

How come when snsn has 2GB with a rating of...2.9 i believe, and -Dave- has 511MB for a rating of 5.9 [believe numbers are correct]?

i have a Gig, and it might b e to do with the speed of the memory not just the amount!

yes, got my SB Live! (not 5.1) working perfectly this time, not like in 5308

Try to install by extracting all files from their exe installer with winrar or so, then go in device manager to update the driver by pointing to the files you just extracted. also check somewhere the choice between 2 and 4 speakers, and the "digital only" checkbox

Perfect, thanks :) . I checked winupdate after I first installed, but it wasn't there. I must have just missed it as it was published yesterday.

Hmm, i cannot install this build, i install and the computer reboots but the screen stays black after it selects it from the boot manager..

:| im stumped, i have tried to install about 2 times and same result, Anyone having similar problems, workaround?

The system always stalls for a minute or two after the boot manager so just leave it. If it stalls for a much longer time, you're probably screwed.

They should have kept the Longhorn name and logo.

tech_kid_2006: ...what?

also the logo as it stands is pretty ugly. maybe if they simplified it, got rid of all the details in it? i don't knowi personally would rather have the windows flag everywhere vs that thing.

I ment to say I just dont get it, but i cant go back and edit my post., plus i was gathering info from microsoft, and what they siad about the new logo.

Where did MS say that it's the new Vista logo?

http://istartedsomething.blogspot.com/2006...-trademark.html

It's not so much a new theme as a new brand element for Windows. We were feeling a little creatively trapped when it came to the Windows identity especially with branding the user experience (in UI). We know we didn't want to slap the Windows flag logo everywhere (disparaging to the flag!), so we created this new little sweet, light gesture animation in the UI. I have to admit, there's still some little treatment-like work I'd like to do to it.

It may not say the vista logo, but its close to the "a vista logo "

thats true , but what is the use for paint? its just a good tool to take screenshots of your pc, and post them on the net. other then that theres no real good use for it anymore. Now if Microsoft included an advanced tool ( less advanced the photoshop, since photoshop is the best out there and we dont want microsoft to get sued by adobe ) then it will be nice,.

What else is there on a new PC that can do work with drawing/ pictures? You're just assuming everyone has access to Paint Shop Pro or Paintshop or even some of the free ones. Which isn't the case. Improving Paint is good.

thats not what i am saying. I'm just saying theres no real use for it, but i do agree that the new UI is good, and i also agree with that not everyone has acess to photo shop.,

Well , Microsoft said thats "Vista's new Logo" and they said they didnt fell like puting the Windows Flag everyweare. The new logo is cool, but i just do get it, oh well its microsoft, we been geting stuff from them that we dont get.

That second sentence doesn't make any sense. Are you typing with your eyes or just using "the force"?

I have a problem getting the glass to work.

After the installation of 5342, and the first time windows was started, the glass worked at once!

Then I installed the newest nVidia Vista(x64) Drivers form the nVidia page (87.15) Then all the glass effect disapeared. I tried things like the Winkey-R : WinSAT Aurora, I saw a beautifull screen for more then 30 minutes but nothing changed. Then I download other (WDDM) Drivers form the internet (87.43), it was not WHQL. But also with those drivers I didn't get any glass effect.

The last thing i tried was to: update the driver, searching on the internet. After a minute windows installed new drivers (86.82) Wich where WDDM and WHQL. But also with this driver i can't get the glass to work.

Can anybody tell me how i get my beautifull glass effect back?

My system:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+

1024 MB RAM

Geforce 6800 GS PCIx

ASUS SLI Deluxe

Rating: 4

    • Given only Volume license customers and specific resellers can obtain the LTSC versions legitimately it seems likely that this has been tinkered with quite a lot!
    • Apple CEO Tim Cook confirms looming price hikes due to memory shortages by Hamid Ganji Image via Apple Memory and chip shortages have led to significant price increases for electronics over the past year, and it seems that more hikes are on the way for upcoming smartphones and computers. Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company is planning to increase the prices of some of its products due to the ongoing memory and storage shortages. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook confirmed the looming price hikes for Apple’s future products, adding that “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” He also said the company is doing its best to “mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.” The Apple CEO also noted that the allocation of a large portion of memory chips to AI companies has contributed to shortages in the market, resulting in lower supply at a time when demand for devices remains high. “We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the bottom line,” Cook said. Cook also added that Apple is ready to use its vast cash reserves to help boost supply in the market because additional production capacity is needed. While he declined to specify how Apple plans to do that, he said the company will not build its own memory and storage factories despite its financial resources and silicon expertise. Cook did not provide further details on the scale of the price increases or which Apple products would be affected, though iPads and Macs could see higher prices sooner than other products. Apple’s next product launch event is scheduled for September, when the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone. It remains unclear whether the upcoming iPhones will be affected by the price increases, but given the current memory shortage, higher prices seem increasingly likely. There is currently no clear timeline for the end of the memory shortage. Samsung, one of the world’s three largest memory chip manufacturers, recently said the shortage could persist for several more years.
    • Downloads does not equal actual usage, even less when the app is pre-installed in some Galaxy phones.
    • +1000 to this, don't understand why they added that margin around the top bar, even the close button is a PITA to click without aiming. Ofc, this is just preview and hopefully they will revert such odd UX decision before hitting final version.
