I simply update my messenger background image along with the desktop background image. Of course I had to cut the desktop bg to fit with the messenger one. This method doesnt work for most images because messenger tends to make the quality of images horrible, making it look horrible when you make such an effect. He took a base icon, like this one: grabbed a small image of his desktop, and used something like Photoshop to distort the desktop image layer to make it fit into the icon's 'monitor'.
