Microsoft Is Taking WGA To The Next Level

Recommended Posts

Apple are a hardware company first, software company second, and while they do care to a certain extent, if you want to run the software you still have to be using a Mac to run it.

Err... a few of them can run on Windows. I know, because as soon as I visit the shops, they are displaying it on a PC. It's very obvious at Low Yat, Sungai Wang and the shadier side of Puduraya. And it costs RM 5 for a normal CD and RM 20 for the DVD which has a few tutorials. They are now touting the Adobe products that can run on PC and Mac hardware at the moment.

Yeah, it is possible to run them on a normal PC (i doubt anybody didn't know that), but it's harder to do it (and i know that is a stupid excuse, but it's the truth)

Oh genuine advantage, how i hate you so. Sad thing is, all of the computers in my house (there are 8) are using the same windows volume license key. They all have a license for XP, but I just cant stand the bloody activation every time i need to do a reformat. Sadly its gotten to the point where someone who owns licenses just pirates anyways to get around all this crap.

Why is everyone so bugged about this?

However there are good news for those who still don?t wish to validate their copy (and no it is not GEICO). There is a way for users to turn off the notifier but it may be turned back on in the future as they try to download the latest updates to IE or Media player or take advantage of the Buy Local offers through their local system builder.

Just turn it back off after every IE or MP upgrade.

Yes, but the crackers do the job of making the program run on Windows and they get paid by the pirates for their work :p . So the consumers don't have to do anything much but just copy some files or open the keygen or crack. The only program that I've encountered that hasn't been cracked properly is Maya 7.0 Unlimited as I still haven't figure out how to get it installed in my computer. The instructions aren't very clear   .

LOL, who wants to pirate apple?

No, seriously, you CAN'T pirate apple, because you have to buy an Apple to get it running (I know, I know about the patches... but then again, you don't get updates from apple for those)

thats where you're wrong, OSX can be used on a regular PC (i did before i got my macbook). And you do have to pay for upgrades (ie: going from 10.3 to 10.4 or soon 10.4 to 10.5) and alot of people do just get a dvd from the internet instead....which is pirating.... so yes apple has the same problem....just not on the same scale

The fact is, no one NEEDS Microsoft to run a computer.

Sure right...There are still alot of apps that aren't on Linux.....You'll problably use Vista anyways so.

Their measures are nothing.....Because this will get cracked in 15 minutes tops....Hell it problably has already been cracked.

From the first time users get the request to validate they have 14 days to comply. After 14 days they will not be able to download security upgrades such as IE7 and Windows Defender. Critical security updates will still be available like it is now.

So basically what they are doing is taking advantage of the fact that Windows is full of security holes, and using that against their customers as a means to get them to be scared that they won't be able to secure their system anymore.

Lame.

Well, if you put it that way :p :shiftyninja: .

So computers with pirated versions of Windows are now going to be more vulnerable? So, that's around 50% of PCs that will be affected... and those users will also be subjected to a popup box appearing every hour or so? LMAO, this will be entertaining to say the least. Sure it won't affect critical patches but security is still being reduced. Hopefully it will encourage people to pirate better software, as if Windows wasn't such a wreck to start with people wouldn't have to worry about their computers being more vulnerable.

It's ridiculous that Microsoft have let it slide this long... it was obviously done only to increase the install base of Windows and create a dependency on it just so that they could do something like this. If they actually price Vista sensibly and implent this system correctly then they could actually rake in the sales. Either that or there'll be a crack within a day (and yes, I know there is currently a WGA crack available - there's just no guarantee it will work with this new version) and Microsoft will be back to square one. *shrugs*

Get over it guys, its not the end of the world. The ones complaining about this are obviously the ones hiding something. Validate your copy and your done, its as simple as that. You have to call in to validate? I called in three times and I spent 2 minutes, at most, with them on the phone and I haven't been bothered by it ever since.

Doesn't bother me one bit, every copy I run, XP MCE, XP Pro, and Vista Beta are all legit. I don't mind having to do a few extra things because I know my versions are legit, and if I do run into some problems, I can get it fixed. People act like calling up microsoft to activate windows is such a pain, what does it take like 5 minutes total? Get a clue, you people complaining have no reason to unless you're running a warezed version of windows.

qfe

But anyone who doesn't have a legal copy just won't install it. What's the point?

I don't think it will be this easy to dodge it :p They will force it in an update most likely.

OSX is one sixth of the cost of windows. so people have no problem spending $99 on it.

If anything, the pop up would have only encouraged people to crack it.

That doesn't make no sense. Whether the pop up is there or not, if the person cracks it its because they had intentions to do so in the first place. Your average joe will not crack it because they won't know how to.

Plus they offer a family pack with 5 licences for less than twice the price of the regular version... I'm surprised Microsoft don't.

Are you retarded? So are you telling me that OSX costs $15.83? Because that is 1/6 the cost of XP Home, since I just paid $90 for it 2 days ago.

Apple fanboys are uneducated and ridiculous.

Uhh how does it not make sense? More people will want to (and will search for a way to) crack it because of the nagging screen. The current WGA has no nags or anything and most people could care less about cracking it.

Like I said, the people that crack Windows install it with the knowledge of how to do so from the beginning. The average joe will buy a PC with it installed and not worry about it. Do you seriously think a 65-year old grandmother will be able to find a crack for Windows?

    • Can you read? I've said I'm willing to pay more for a notchless (no notch) 3:2 screen.
    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • make your own notch - it's not that hard
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
