Microsoft Is Taking WGA To The Next Level

Recommended Posts

I've reinstalled about 7 times and not once did I ever have to call. If it asks you to call... Just re-register (enter your name and address) again and it will activate.

Uh, yeah, it is a pain calling MS. I am not a criminal, and I don't like someone even hinting at the possible suggestion that I may even be a criminal. What? Were you raised to think that everyone's a criminal until judged not to be so in some kind of Orwellian nightmare? What sort of life is that?

new version is out, & also on Windows Update there is a new update, WGA validation tooltip, but that tool tip is optional, i updated to the new version 1.5.526, everything is going fine

That version has been out for over a week now :)

This is the evil update for you pirates, Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)

The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.

you sure about that? mine only worked about 2-3 times over the web, after that i had to call and talk to that damn machine, after another 2-3 times the machine kept transfering me to a live person that usally couldn't even speak english correctly.

I have 2 academic XP Pros and one XP Home OEM.

Speaking of... There is already a workaround on Bittorrent. lol.

What's everyone complaining about? It's not like you will be affected (unless you ARE running an illegal version of Windows, then you have no excuse for complaining  ). I know it's a hassle, heck I have to call Singapore everytime I install Windows in my computer, at least you've got Toll-Free numbers. I have to pay up to RM 30 on calls alone. I'm Malaysian and the nearest shop sells Windows XP Pro for RM 5 but I still went and bought the original one which costs RM 500. It is a lot of money here but I prefer original than pirated especially considering the fact that if you buy the pirated copy, you're committing a crime  . I believe it is a good move by Microsoft and I applaud their decision, though I hope it will be a smooth transition.

Well excusme, I run 4 legal versions of windows and I DO complain. I just hope this thing doesnt attempt to validate without my knowledge. If I ever need something from windows update or whatever, I will validate it.. See, it's more like a matter of privacy to me. Microsoft wants to know if my version of windows is legit? Then they better come and check those damn stickers themselves.

As I said, I don't know if this WGA attempts to validate without the user knowing it...

I now own all my copys of XP since I've got the cash to do it... before.. I was just to damn poor lol

then again.. it's alot easer to install a cracked version then a legit version.. and thats just damn sad

Exactly, I betcha this is going to end up beeing more annoying to those running legit versions than those who just find their way around it.

Sad, but true :p

Does it just validate windows? I'm wondering if they'll move into validating other MS software as well... office, streets and tips, encarta, and whatever else

I'm guessing this is just pre-game for whatever they're planning to do with Vista...that doesn't bode well for users - Vista is ugly looking enough without having to deal with *bong* ValidateMe? *bong* ValidateMe? flashing in your ****ing face everytime you try to do something

Yes, WE as powerusers can all disable the annoying little popups but ma and pa average computer user type folk arn't going to know you can do that

People will crack this for sure i bet

It was cracked months and months ago. In fact its as simple as "uping" the version number on a certain dll that has been cracked and it continues to work. It suprises me how many times i have had to "up" that version number and yet it still works.

Yes because clicking "Activate Windows" with your mouse is too damn hard.

Get over your stupid mac already. Nobody cares.

Macs are way overrated. Once Vista comes out the Mac will be behind in features.

There are going to be Direct 3D 10 games at E3 and there are going to be all kinds of applications

opening up with .NET and Windows Presentation Foundation to be even caring about the Mac.

Apple should start getting ready to make windows apps.... oh wait they already do!

hahaha THANK YOU :D

The Neowin Corporate Edition. :D

Count me in too.

Also, Microsoft knowledge base article says that it can be removed in Add/Remove programs. Even the most novice user will be able to cut it off. Seems pointless to me.

If you have not paid then you should be incarcerated.

Yeah, in prison along with all the other serious offences like public nudity and speeding; you might as well free all the wife beaters to make room.

Ummm... yeah.

They are the ones who buy from Dell and such. Even those that buy from a local store can call up the people they purchased from and get walked-through. Or contact Microsoft, if the business is "shady".

It isn't going to be the end of the world, even for "average grandma & grandpa" types.

This guy obviously never tried 10.4  even Pauly admits that MS copies various features from Mac ... oh and remember... 10.5 is just on the horizon

    • Can you read? I've said I'm willing to pay more for a notchless (no notch) 3:2 screen.
    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • make your own notch - it's not that hard
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
