Official topic for WWDC 2006 which starts on August 7th 2006, all other topics when created will be merged into this one.

Rumours are out about what to expect from WWDC 2006 -

iPhone/iChat Phone

iTunes movie rental store

MacBook Pro's with Intel's "Merom" processors

Mac Pro with Blu-ray drive, new enclosure, Intel's "Woodcrest" processors

New Cinema Displays with 1:1000 contrast ratio, as well as built in iSight

Revised Nano's with higher capacity (4GB to 8GB), new colours

New Xserve's

What we know that will happen at WWDC 2006 -

Preview of Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard", which is rumoured to contain these features -

* A redesigned Finder with expanded use of Spotlight

* Virtualization software

* Collaborative editing tools

* OS-level integration of a geographical mapping technology

* Tabbed chats, whiteboarding and calling phone lines in iChat

* Virtual desktops, improved file synching and improved Spotlight performance

* Garbage collection for Objective-C

* Resolution independence

* Quartz 2D Extreme activated by default (Quartz 2D Extreme was introduced in early Panther builds and the 2004 WWDC developer sessions said it would be activated in 10.3.0. However it wasn't, and when manually invoked with Quartz Debug there are visual artifacts which prevent it being useful.)

The two pictures I have attached are from the banner for WWDC 2006, via Digg -

http://digg.com/apple/WWDC_2006_Banner_Rev...at_new_products

Seems to be a black MacBook Pro on there with a backlit keyboard, though it also has been dismissed as a black MacBook.

Also on there is Leopard's new OS X logo by the looks of it (very nice indeed).

Feel free to add any other rumours to this and discuss :D

Radish?

Is the keynote going to be streamed live? What time?

I am curious about this too, I would atleast like it to be posted on Apple.com the 7th. If it was streamed/live, that would be much better. :D

From what I see, the bigger stuff is more important. The 'Mac Pro' has yet to be released, and is the last PowerPC computer to be switched over, excluding the Apple Server. Then theres the MacBook Pro, in which I have no idea why thats so big. Smaller is the Leopard logo/DVD and the iMac. Now I would like to know if there will be a new iMac design (probobly not) or if they are just planning on switching the inside hardware. Smaller is the 64bit logo, new and easy to guess what that means, and so on...

I am patiently waiting for WWDC06, I am really curious what Apple has in store for us! :D

as unlikely as it is may be (since no1 is suggesting it) im hoping for merom macbooks (non pro models) or atleast a processor bump up to those 2.33ghz chips that were meant to come out. And i would also like the nanos to get a nice update, which is possibly more likely since they are well over due although this is not the place to update ipods.. why do i want this? im going to buy education mac + ipod deal after WWDC hahaha

You do know that Apple doesn't put things in effect that was introduced in WWDC until months after it? (Usually)

http://www.macrumorslive.com/

This page uses the latest web technologies to provide live coverage of this event. The page will not visibly refresh as it has in the past -- instead updates will be automatically inserted at the top of the updates section. Do not reload manually.

Apple's World Wide Developers Conference commences on the 7th of August, with Steve Jobs giving the keynote presentation at 10am. It is not anticipated that there will be a live video broadcast of the keynote and so, if at all possible, MacRumors will provide live coverage on this site.

There should be a video stream posted a little while after the keynote finishes.

In the last 1.5 years, when they have announced product updates they have been available either right away or in a couple weeks from announcement. hardly months. There was that case of the power macs some time back that were months from their announcement, but that was one bad situation.

the fact that WWDC is not really the place for the products i want to be updated is more to the point. im confident if they are announced they will be available either right away or atleast within a couple of weeks.

Don't expect 10.5 to be available that soon.

Product annoucements are instant, annoucements in WWDC's usually are not instant.

No i get what we are talking about...the availability of products announced at WWDC. At least that's what the person you quoted was speaking about and what the first part of your post was about.

You are one of the few who 'couldn't care less about Leopard'. I'd say that is easily the most anticipated part of the keynote.

My point was, yes, the hardware announced at WWDC is usually available shortly thereafter. In some rare instances, you'll have to wait one or two months.

EXCLUSIVE: Leopard Feature Set Leaked

In advance of Monday's keynote address by Steve Jobs at WWDC The PowerPage has received a alleged copy of the features (and some screenies) from Apple's next generation operating system - Mac OS 10.5 ("Leopard"). The details are unconfirmed and are being posted for informational purposes only.

Mac OS 10.5 will see updates to most of the included applications, among the major updates are:

  • Spotlight 2.0
  • Dashboard 2.0
  • Safari 3.0
  • iChat 4.0
  • Automator 2.0
  • QuickTime 7.2
  • Mail 3.0
  • iCal 3.0
  • Address Book 5.0

The updates are as follows:

Spotlight 2.0:

  • Spotlight's icon changes to suit the new apple menu logo
  • Instead of words down the side i.e. applications, system preferences... there are icons of each at a user defined size (80 x 80 default). So for applications there is the global application icon, and next to the hits and so on.
  • The icons of the hits will be larger and for documents, events, mail, images, PDF's movies, fonts and presentations. there will be little live icons. For documents, the icon of the app (word or pages), events; the iCal icon with the date of the event and the time on it.
  • Image previews will be larger but there will also be a little text of the type of image i.e. jpg in a contrasting color in the bottom right of the preview. PDF's will just be larger, movies will have a little preview at about 8x the speed (or less fast depending on the length) that will be cached in the finder.
  • Fonts will be in the font type.
  • Presentations will preview just like movies.
  • If any of the items are in an open window, on the desktop, or in an app (bookmarks in safari, or a library item in itunes etc.) and the app is open, the rest of the app will fade and the specific items will light up, and if more than one, in the examples given, the app will just give a standard search and safari will open the bookmark browser.

itunesws3450ip7.png

  • The same goes if it is on the desktop, the spotlight will shine on the icon(s).

spotlight2450hv4.png

  • There will be the standard presumed better metadata searching. So if the majority of results are images, the show all pane at the right will also allow to organize by camera, date taken, file type and app used. The most used app and file type at the top of its respective lists.
  • Spotlight will also search widgets
  • The slideshow feature will be enhanced for most filetypes. Documents can be previewed in a similar way to images are now and so on and so forth.
  • Also spotlight will actually be almost instantanteous or as instant as they can hope.
  • A new spotlight widget.

Dashboard 2.0:

  • Dashboard will get a system preferences icon.
  • Dashboard will appear in the application switcher.
  • Widgets can now be placed on the desktop. If one drags an icon to the board and waits two seconds in one place the board will fade out and you can place it on the desktop. The icon will appear in the dock and will be treated as an app.
  • You can also keep widgets in the dock, either by dragging them there from dashboard or keeping them there when they appear on the desktop.
  • In the dock will be the x icon for closing the widget on top of the widget icon, not on the widget itself.
  • There will be also a selection of different animations.
  • You can isolate dashboard in a similar way to front row, you can push the desktop as an expose item to the side and isolate dashboard that way.
  • You can isolate dashboard also via a cube effect. Also you can open dashboard in a similar way to f11, the widgets will hide at the side and come forward for use, in this one, the dashboard will not be isolated. Hot corners and f numbers can be configured to use one of them each. so you can have a different function key for each affect.
  • In the isolated dashboard, the background will be black, but it will act as a pool of water, in a similar way as to now, so when you drag an widget around, you can create ripples.
  • Also you can choose from water, air, space and metal as your chosen set of widget animations. Air and metal animations are not elaborated on, but space acts a bit like a black hole when you remove a widget and the widgets 'zoom' on.
  • New widgets.

dashboard2450my8.png

Safari 3.0:

  • Phishing filter
  • Tighter RSS
  • Integrated FTP
  • Integrated mailto function, a mail plugin that lets you send emails without opening Mail.
  • Isolation box. When this is activated, Safari grows a little black shield around it and everything to do with Safari takes place instead in an encrypted disk image of a special filesystem that nulls unix permissions, anything that is written goes there and can't execute out of the image. The image is deleted after the session.
  • Tabs can now operate on more than one line, and be saved.
  • A safari Expos? is available, allowing Web pages in tabs to be treated as separate windows for the time of the Expos?.
  • Web pages can be "Widgetized." You can make a new separate widget of a Web page, there is also a mini Safari widget that just has back and forward buttons and a small address bar.
  • Tighter integration with Web formats.iChat 4.0:b>
    • 7 way video conversations available.
    • A new window with gives iSight feedback and also letting you optimize your video stream how you want to.
    • Better Voice over IP integration.
    • Folders for contacts.
    • Different layout, quite hard to explain, but better.
    • MSN and Yahoo integration
    • Dedicated iChat widgetAutomator 2.0:b>
      • Loads faster
      • Different layout
      • AppleScript is updated and is more english, allowing automator to incorporate it without people feeling squeamish.
      • More actions
      • GUI scripting
      • Dedicated widgetQuickTime 7.2:b>
        • Full screen and audio recording available in non-Pro version
        • New CODECs, including loose RealPlayer and DiVX.
        • Movie slideshow feature
        • Some other minor inclusions
        • Dedicated widgetMail 3.0:b>
          • New server protocols
          • Widescreen version
          • Different views, drop down
          • Gmail-like thread system
          • Ability to send proper HTML email
          • Able to import pages documents as email
          • iChat integration and new collaboration integration
          • iCal calendar integrationiCal 3.0:b>
            • Brilliant new UI
            • 25 different organization techniques
            • 100's more options for each log
            • Integration with more formatsAddress Book 5.0:b>

    • Weekend PC Game Deals: Anno 117, Final Fantasy VII, Rematch, and more by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Weekend PC Game Deals is where the hottest gaming deals from all over the internet are gathered into one place every week for your consumption. So kick back, relax, and hold on to your wallets. The Epic Games Store's mystery giveaways may have ended, but its regular freebies didn't miss a step this week. The double drop was for copies of Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks and The Ouroboros King. Speed Freeks lands for multiplayer racing fans, but with plenty of competitive shooting elements too. You will be piloting Ork buggies, tanks, and aircraft modeled after the popular tabletop miniatures while trying to complete objectives and pass finish lines. Next, Ouroboros King is a crossover between chess and tactical roguelikes, offering the chance to create your own army with special rules to beat incoming foes on the board. The double giveaway on the Epic Games Store will be available until June 11, and replacing it will be Citizen Sleeper and ROBOBEAT. The Humble Store brought a new charity bundle to check out this week too. Landing with the name The Complete Inkle Library, this is a large collection of interactive narrative puzzle games from the publisher Inkle. This begins with Heaven's Vault, four parts from the Sorcery series, 80 Days, Overboard, and Pendragon: Narrative Tactics within the starting tier for $9. • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!
    • Same, never saw it on Android or iOS. Guess only some people got it *shrugs*
    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
