WelshBluebird
I think that 5 years from now we would have touchscreen LCD's as commonplace and we might lose mouse pointers for good. (I can't PS to save my life though) I don't think we will lose the mouse and keyboard althogther, simply because how would you play FPS's using a touch screen? I do agree though, that we will probably see a shift towards other methods of input (voice, touch, etc)

ScottKin
well in blackcomb the codename for vienna there was alot of talk about a true 3d space and microsoft usally tryes to make the user compfortable with words like start (button) and home (page) people are usually compfortable at home so why not make a 3d virtual home that you can navigate through and have the tv in the "living room" as media center ect...... maybe have home automation features.....you may want to change the furniture or windows blinds or type of floor..... i'm sorry about the spelling its 2:19 am I wonder if you're thinking about something along the lines of a product already out there: 3DNA Desktop I tried this out several years ago, and I have no real idea of how far they've come since I first tried it. It's an interesting concept, but I didn't see people going too crazy for this kind of UI; however, I think this might be along the lines of what you're thinking about. --ScottKin

notuptome2004
i will assure you that it is passable Microsoft has already started on Windows Vienna as far back as maby the begin g of last year in 2006 , as windows Vista started out just months before 2001 while XP was just hitting Beta 1 stage so i am sure microsoft is got a very early version in ther labs. and am sure they will use the Ribbon interface for something in vienna

koppit
OK.. I like the ideas, but i agreed completely with a previous post .. and start with an orb in the middle of your screen that responds to either the windows key or your mouse. it allows you to login with a password prompt, and then the fun begins. I don't like to think inside the box :) Instead of a 2d gui, why not a 3d gui? I'm thinking a cylindrical task launcher that spins as you move the mouse left to right, and the scroll wheel will let you change what's diplayed on it, from "user central" (my documents, music, video, etc) to "applications" to "games" to "internet" .. that kind of thing. The colour could change to let you know what's displayed has changed, with a top-down colour shift, like wiping one colour over top of the other (think vista's pulsating progress bars, but changing colours). If you click something, the cylinder shrinks and moves to a corner of the screen that shows open tasks and allows you to shift through them with a mouseover. I'd make it in photoshop but I haven't used it since high school so I doubt I'd be able to come up with anything constructive. What do you think, am I dreaming? :)

koppit
:woot: !! that was fast, and pretty damn close .. freakin awesome! I was just thinking .. it should be more transparent in the background, and perhaps have a more defined "cylinder" behind it, like the strip behind osx's dock? but still .. wow. Glassed Silver
to talk about the touchscreen thingy: i guess we will see more usage and pushing this thing, allthough it will never ever replace the mouse, merely it will be an addon for task that need to be intuitive or quick... Have you ever imagined how horrible it would be to have to raise your arm all the time to control your computer? sure, browsing forums is a lot of typing some times, but when it comes to webdesign for example or other kinds of apps that require heavy navigation usage, i guess having your arm raised all the time becomes very uncomfortable... Glassed Silver:mac edit: / addition: @digitalsoft: nice looking concept, looks awesome :) i wish there were more thinkers like you over at the deciding positions in MS :) yea its a bit too basic view-ish to be a good "one click" interface or to feature most of the task i do over the day, but the design is so sweet :)
Sniper101
I have a good idea for this :) Why doesn't someone base a mockup around Windows Media Center's (Vista version) UI? it would look cool. Also loose the XP/Vista Feeling aswell we need different lol something people wouldnt expect the Taskbar has worn out its look thats all most people are looking at widgets etc etc and Media Center feels like a good place to start. It could give the option to revert back to Windows 2k UI's, Windows XP UI's , All the Longhorn UI's Finally Windows Vista's UI's if desired. If i had Photoshop on this Computer id have mocked up one of my own :)

JoshHood
Hi, I've just started working on a concept around the whole 'orb' thing, back soon...
JoshHood
Hi guys, this is my first post on these forums, and I actually joined after seeing this thread, some of this stuff is amazing especially yours DigitalSoft. I don't have Photoshop and Im pretty sure it's really complex so this is done in PowerPoint 2007, any input would be great. Anyway, Ive had this idea in my head for a while, going along the idea of using the Orb as a starting point, thought Id put it up here. More likely to be a PowerToy or Ultimate Extra than the actual version cos its so different. Anyways it works basically like media centre, click one of the menu items (Documents, Media Centre, Live, Office etc.) and you kinda zoom into that thing, with that menu item becoming the centre etc. I got loads more [arts of this concept to put up so tell me whatya think.
