Photoshop Windows Rome!

Recommended Posts

I got bored, I don't have Photoshop, I *did* use Powerpoint (I'm lazy/cheap) and *yes* it's gaudy, somewhat unfunctional, and I kinda forgot what I was doing near the end (the big area with only 5 icons in it) I don't care about any of this because I only spent 20 minutes creating it. Take that, sleep!

But here goes;

I'll try to explain what I can remember of my original intentions:

The start menu features three 'rings' the innermost ring contains the most commonly used system tools, the middle ring the most commonly used applications and the outermost ring features system/user folders that can be expanded upon (as pictured in 24bit pixelated goodness!!*)

Also, before I fall asleep (nearing 10 to two in the morning..) there is a redesigned task bar and notification area. Thats all, I'm going to bed now.

*note sarcasm.

(Beware of the Ceiling Cat!!)

well in blackcomb the codename for vienna there was alot of talk about a true 3d space and microsoft usally tryes to make the user compfortable with words like start (button) and home (page) people are usually compfortable at home

so why not make a 3d virtual home that you can navigate through and have the tv in the "living room" as media center ect...... maybe have home automation features.....you may want to change the furniture or windows blinds or type of floor.....

i'm sorry about the spelling its 2:19 am

I tried to create a mock up, but I suck. So heres my thoughts of what It will be like:

The interface will be purely by touchscreen, voice and eye movement.

The keyboard & screen will combine and where your keyboard is now, a screen will be at an angle. This will be wireless, including wireless power.

It will be able to sync will almost every item in your house. Want to record any programme? Not a problem.

Low on milk? Let Rome order you some automatically.

Broadband speeds will be beyond anything we can imagine now, so online hard drives will be around. Instant transfers.

Optical/DNA recognition to increase security.

With ram drives, boot times will be around 5/10 seconds from cold start. Rome will become the new BIOS

Intelligent companion will predict what programmes you run before you run them.

Phone calls will all be done over the net. With Rome being your own answering machine.

Desktop will have various zoom levels. Zoom right out to hide all windows and play a game, no drop in fps.

Voice activation that properly works! Intelligent companion will understand anything you say and respond like a real person. You-"Any new mail?" Computer-"Nah mate, not popular enough today!"

Getting a bit carried away there..But the new OS's will ALL be based on the interfaces we use. I found this article, although old, is quite interesting. Click

cool but I'm still happy with the old mouse and keyboard and I don't think ms is ready to make that big of a change and scare people away from using the computer

a feature that i've always thought would be neat is to have an interactive background. for example, something non-obtrusive, but say you have a standard vista background, one with a lake and some grass. as you drag a window over the desktop, the grass, water, clouds, etc. will sway in the direction you dragged the window over it. it would be as if the window was a gust of wind. always thought that would be neat.

My own concept of Windows Rome, creating using Photoshop. Similar to Digital Soft's early concepts, but mine include an extra sidebar which makes the interface much more informative. Im actually not very good with Photoshop and i've only used it a few times, so plz give comments :) (Sorry for big image size)

Very good indeed, but too futuristic; I doubt Microsoft has the time to start something like this; And such changes are not achieved in a short time period... it requires many years... and im not talking about 5

Like all of your concepts.

But it looks like that the "Windows Rome" thing has become "your ideal Windows OS interface" sort of thing.

Keep going and don't kill it and we'll make "Windows Rome" into another colloquial term used by computer geeks like us.

Hm....I wouldent mind a touchscreen keyboard that's merged into the monitor at all. It could display the keyboard for normal use, be changed into specific keyboards to suit applications, and even display stats or other misc info when running full screen programs or what not.

Wouldn't it be something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnqyQotPhFY

Too bad the YouTube idiots are all fooled by the title.

That's Sun's Project Looking Glass, has absolutely NOTHING to do with Microsoft.

I still think the coolest concepts are from microsoft themselves and what they for various reasons have opted not to go with like this

http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-ga...hould-have-been

Even the old longhorn contact system I thought was fantastic, I used the unstable OS for a cpl months I liked the GUI of that so much.

But besides that even the old blackcomb/longhorn/MSN preview videos and pics were fantastic.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/longhorn_preview.asp

I just feel weve reached a point now where the technology and price of technology has become commonplace enough that we should be seeing some futuristic style or revoutionary style operating systems, and yet its still the same old stuff.

I guess the problem is that ordinary users, or infact anyone who hasnt spent time in this thread isnt too concerned nor interested in that revolutionary change we might be expecting.

  • 3 weeks later...

I love your concepts, digitalsoft!

Honestly, I've been thinking about this sort of thing for a long time. I was thrilled to find this thread. It is a great idea.

I think that a new Windows UI needs to step away from the Start menu ideology. I think the taskbar needs to no longer exist in its ancient form.

I think that a modern desktop needs to be modular, and that all its components need to be freely movable and adjustable.

I've taken a bunch of the shots that everybody has posted and I want to use them as reference and combine them together to come up with another concept design.

This project is a great idea, and I want to go somewhere with it!

I'm average at Photoshop, but the important part is the idea.
