Mac OS X 'Leopard'-related Discussion

i just updated to 10.5.1... is it just me or has the animation performance on Expos?/Spaces been MUCH improved on GMA950 MacBooks?:|| everything feels so smooth now. no bugs so far with the .1 update:DD

Blaine: yes the iCal icon is updated on logon, i think. if you leave it overnight it won't get updated, it seems:||

Spaces F8 is SO much faster now on my Macbook.

a-HA! they disabled V-Sync when animating Spaces:|| that's why it's so fast now if you press F8 repeatedly you can see tearing on the sides of the Spaces :\

aw well. at least Expos? still seems to have V-Sync. I used to love OS X cause everything was V-Synced... seems no mor:p:p

Yes every thing is as smooth as tiger now. I think maybe 10.5.1 had updated graphics drivers for the GMA950?

the lack of VSync is driving me mad :(

i always loved OS X cause EVERYTHING had VSync on it. now Spaces doesn't... and it shows. it feels rough. And it's immune to Quartz Debug settings! this sucks...

Expos? still has VSync on. and quick-switching Spaces also does. only the bird's eye view doesn't

I'm guessing QuickLook isn't supposed to look like this :p

Also corrupted a Finder window when i used it looking for a file using Spotlight (Which I've fallen in love with again, much better than Tiger's implementation)

Edit:

Now this I love, I'm assuming it's just treating it like any other web page (so using WebKit to show it), it's a shame it doesn't generate preview icons for it though)

What do you mean?

exactly what i said :p when the Spaces bird's-eye view animates its in/out transitions, the redrawing of the screen is not synchronized with the monitor redraw, hence it shows a weird tearing appearance on the edges of the desktops. it's not a glitch per se. it's just... ugly because the entire OS X UI is VSynched. this isn't. it's not a pleasing sight.

this happens on my GMA950 MacBook. didn't happen before. it's a new thing on the 10.5.1 update. i wonder if this is a "cut corners" action to make Spaces animate faster (because it was visibly slow on 10.5).

edit.: i've uploaded a pic that shows the "tearing". notice on the bottom right corner of the leftmost space.

I find most UI animations have slowed right down on my Mac Mini (also running a GMA950) under Leopard. Doesn't help that the poor old thing is having to drive a 1600x1200 display I suppose but Tiger did manage to run all the animations (dock, etc) perfectly fluidly... Leopard can't :(

I think I see what you mean now.

I get the same thing on my new iMac, so I doubt your Mac mini is to blame. The Genie minimization effect really is about everything but smooth on it. Especially with Safari and the Finder. :/

Menge: Whoa, I don't get anything as dramatic as that when bringing up Spaces. :| When looking really closely you can see the sides are a slightly jaggy for a split second, more or less like what you see when minimizing a window using Genie. I thought you meant that.

nope. minimizing windows doesn't get VSync issues with me... it's just poor framerate. but the spaces thing is occurring on my friend's MacBook, too (both fresh installs; different models; same GMA950) the frame rate is good, but the tearing occurs. your iMac might not have this cause on your video card, you can do it with VSync on, so Apple enabled it? i don't know... i'm trying to find out what this is

Any ideas why I can't access any new shared folders in Windows from my MacBook? (Leopard 10.5.1). But I still can connect to other shared folders, before installing Leopard. I just get "Connecting..." message and then throws me back to folders list.

No what I meant was, because Genie morphs the window the edges become a bit pixelated during the animation. Spaces has this as well slightly on my Mac. Apparently it has nothing to do with VSync I guess, but I thought you were talking about that earlier (before you posted that photo).

Yeah who knows Apple might have disabled VSync on slower GPU cards.

new shared Windows folders work for me on my MacBook. the computers still show on the finder sidebar and when i connect it shows the new share.

yeh the pixelated happens here, too. happened in Tiger, too :p i noticed also that they increased the polygon count on the Genie effect :p it's "rounder" than in Tiger :)

but yeh... i think Apple might've disabled VSync on lower-end video cards, just like they disabled transparency on certain older computers.

Man, i thought Spaces would be like a nice form of virtual desktops, it just seems like a way to segregate apps (unless i can find some easy way to drag windows between desktops)

drag a window to the edge of the screen that borders the space you want the window in. wait half a second.

OR

open spaces (F8) and drag the window you want to the space you want ;)

Do what Menge says or hold the window and just ctrl+1 (etc) to whatever space you want.

I wish you could ctrl+shift+arrow to move a window, though, I'm almost always sing my keyboard instead of my mouse, and the whole clicking on window and then moving spaces is an awkward hand movement on my macbook pro.

Download Themepark > Locate and open Extras.rsrc and Extras2.rsrc > Do a search for all the scroll bar resources > replace them with the new scroll bar images. You'll probably have to modify them in Photoshop or whatever editing application.

Good Luck! :p

    • This seems backwards. You should have to explicitly authorize files for outside use. It shouldn't be the default.
    • Wow you are right, I never even noticed this until you said it! (870E Aorus Master) Before testing this card I had a TP-Link tx401 10GbE PCIe card in that slot (now using XikeStor 310 Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter).
    • Lack of 5.1 makes this a no sale. What I really wish creative would make would be a USB version that supports 5.1 analog audio for speakers, can switch to headphone mode, and matches the specs of their top tier cards. The current X870E AMD motherboards dont have a great option for adding a PCIE x1 card without cutting down pcie lanes to the graphics card.
    • The Microsoft Office feature that time forgot by Usama Jawad I have been actively using Microsoft Word for the past couple of decades in academic, professional, and personal capacities. Although I used it through the perpetual version of Office apps at the start, I have been an active subscriber of Microsoft 365 Family subscription for over five years now. This means that my Word installation is regularly updated with new features, some of which I don't really like, but that's beside the point. As new features get continuously added, old ones that used to be a staple of Word have started to take a backseat. While I was reminiscing over my Windows experiences from my childhood today, I suddenly remember one such capability that I heavily used in my younger years but have not really touched in over a decade, and haven't seen in documents created by others either. That feature is WordArt. Just to clarify, WordArt is not a Microsoft product specific to Word, and is included in other Office apps like PowerPoint and Excel too. However, Microsoft Word is the app that I used Word Art in heavily, while making assignments or other deliverables for school. If you're unaware, WordArt offers a collection of styling techniques for text, introducing 3D effects like shadows and reflections in the text. It used to be one of the coolest things ever when I was at school and me and my classmates would often compete to ensure that our assignment's title in WordArt was truly the best and stood out above the rest. See some examples of WordArt, still present in the latest versions of Word below: Although WordArt is undeniably cool, it has taken a bit of a backseat, and has been relegated from the Home tab to the Insert toolbar, along with a bunch of other utilities, making it very easy to miss. This isn't exactly surprising because WordArt doesn't really have a place in academic and professional documents anymore, and while I have seen some creatives using it while developing promo material, even that sector has gravitated more towards dedicated graphic designing tools in the past years. For the vast majority of us, WordArt doesn't really exist, and that's alright. At least, it's still an option that can allow us to reminisce our childhood or even make some quick text stylization, if we really need it. Perhaps its usage has waned over time or the novelty has worn off, but I haven't even seen children use it in their academic assignments anymore. In fact, many don't even know that it exists. Maybe that's the fate of every beloved feature. What once felt cutting edge eventually becomes a relic, quietly tucked away as tastes, trends, and technology move on. WordArt may no longer dominate school assignments or decorate the covers of classroom projects, but for those of us who grew up with it, it remains a colorful reminder of a time when making text glow, bend, and cast giant shadows felt like the height of creativity. Hidden behind a few clicks in modern Word, it still survives not as a productivity tool, but as a small piece of computing nostalgia that refuses to disappear.
