No No, read the review:

Let's face it, folks; Tolkien was a crummy fantasy writer.  Tolkien, while an intellect, was a schmuck as a fictional author. He struck gold with, The Hobbit, which was entertaining, in an L. Frank Baum sort of way (I.E. - He ripped of The Wizard of Oz, and all of its sequels), but then his brain went geographically haywire, and he began caring about maps more than characters and settings more than saviors.

The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and, The Return of the King reveal this to be true.  These three novels are actually one overly-long, extremely-tedious story that could barely keep a coma victim awake.  Sure, the puke-cleanser around Tolkien's verbal vomit may smell like roses, but that isn't him, J.R.R. fans, it's you.  It is Tolkien's fans that created the mystical aura around Lords, not vice-versa.  What Tolkien gave each and every one of you in his segmented novel was a rough-draft, and I have read hundreds of pieces of fan fiction that have pushed his secondary work to a whole 'nother level.

SPOILER ALERT!

I just saw this movie, and I liked it, but it didnt stand up to the first, the thing that got me dissapointed in the beginning was when frodo was walking up a rocky hill. his fake feet where just flopping around, it looked so bad, i mean this is a HUGE hyped movie. things like that shouldnt have been over-looked... I think that that over looked mistake was the overall feel of the movie for me. I thought that the "Set" at times for helms deep, was WAY to out of perspective with the movie ( not the book ) at times there was like 15 people standing around, then at other times there where thousands...just didnt feel like the scope of the film was kept even...I left feeling "blah"

I still liked the movie, It just wasnt finished. needed another 3 or 4 months of editing and so on.

ahh nobody will ever be happy and there will always be fans and critics alike (not necessarily exclusive), but the fact remains, the books became ww best sellers and cult classics and the movies will likewise break numbers and banks. So...regardless what you or I or that tolkien hating critic may think, the books and the movies were/are both a success and more people like it than not. If anything I am the most excited by the fact that these LOTR movies are introducing fantasy to the general public. I've talked to many who've said they just read the books after watching the first movie and I think this is fantastic. Maybe we will see more high quality fantasy movies after this...dragonlance anybody? or how about the Darkelf Trilogies with Drizzt?

The movie was about sex and violence, maybe they didn't curse. I didn't think it was nearly as good as the first one. In fact, I thought this one was a bit lacking. It dragged too much, and had too much corny manuer in it that drag it down. I love the story, I like a lot of sci fi. But please it was not that great. The first one yes, this one no.

As I said in a earlier post about this subject, i was able to separate the movie from the book and i enjoyed the movie. I'm a big fan of the books and i think the movie had little to do with the book other than the title and the general story. However, 95% of movies made from great books aren't as good as the books, it's just the nature of the business of making a movie. I also understand that The Two Towers is the middle movie in the trilogy and it's hard to judge Two Towers without separating it from FOTR and ROTK. I don't think Two Towers holds up to Fellowship, but it might hold up very well when Return comes out.

I, as well, saw it a second time today, and the one aspect that still stands out is Gollum. It amazes me that they were able to so fully make him a believable character and capture his dual nature. Maybe in a few years the Academy Awards will have to start handing out Oscars for best CGI character, LOL. Gollum is certainly the best part of the movie, IMHO.

As for hoping that Fantasy stories will make it to the big screen, I'm hoping the Steven R. Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series makes it to the screen one day. I would love to see what someone would be able to do with Lord Foul's Bane, The IllEarth War and The Power that Preserves. Even though i love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, i love that series more.

Maybe we will see more high quality fantasy movies after this...dragonlance anybody?

oooooo! :woot:

Damn I would love to see the "Chronicles" trilogy from Dragonlance put onto the big screen. Although I dont' know how well that'd transition, I loved the books to no end.

I am a bit wary that if they do, they'll get butchered tho :( ... but that's just paranoia I guess. I bet the die-hard Tolkien fans felt the same way when "Fellowship" came out.

I saw it again today, and it was just as good this time around. Granted, I've never read the book, so I will listen to those peoples opinions who have, and respect their judgements to whether they like it or not. I, however, loved it. The ents, gollum, etc....awesome.

Dunno if this site has been mentioned already on here, but this is a case of people going TOO far.

I am sure Tolkein had it in mind over 40 years ago when he wrote Lord of the Rings...sheesh..

My only complaint was they showed a trailer for Warcraft III... I almost thought it was going to be a movie ::sniffles:: so I came home and played again instead.

Anywho, excellent fight scenes in Helm's Deep thought the "allies" were a bit underplayed. They kicked more butt in the first war than Helm's Deep.

The Ent March was just as I had pictured it in my head when I first read the book. The friend I went with never read beyond the hobbit and asked "What can a giant tree do?" ... then they gaped at the March. Hehehe.

Gollum was magnificent. The CGI was top-notch and the expressions were loud and clear.

A billion thumbs up!

Anyone notice the really fake special effect in the movie? not really spoiling anything I don't think, its very obvious when it happens..

like when Legolas swoops around and lands on top of that horse? the audience cheered and clapped when he did that. i thought it was kinda lame to tell you the truth.

i thought it was kinda bad-ass myself. think about it - elves probably would be trained well in the riding of horses, and could get quite good at tricks like that with hundreds of years of practice.

it's not a fake stunt for a made-up race....

amen that's one of the main things i want from these movies more people exposed to Tolkien and fantasy in gerneal. (not sarcasm)

oh and the golden compass series and stuff ARE becoming movies, ive never read em but they're fantasy sdo i thought id mention it.

my friend said the talking trees were like something from a disney film. I said they were given more scope and granduer in the boo (and made sure he knew they were Ents)k, he said he assumed there would be less of them. I almost killed him. ;)

It is the 'middle' .... The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones were not meant to stand alone. They are part of a series. The Two Towers is not a sequel, it is an extention! Keep that in mind when you say the film is 'incomplete'.

If you read my post right, I said that the two towers needed 3 or 4 months of editing to do to get rid of all the little bugs..

Here's my 2 cents. Every artists take on a subject is unique depending upon his/her medium. In fact, an artist creation should not be compared to an orginal.

Take this for example. If you want to see a pond with water lillies, you can look all over the world, and find thousands of such ponds. They are all unique, but look largely the same. If, however, you want Monet's Waterlillies, it exsists only one place. Its uniqe. It's not meant to REPLACE the original, rather its an INTERPRETATION of it.

Thats my take on books made into movies. If you like the book, read the book. As is the case with the Fellowship of the Rings movies, they are an INTERPRETATION. In fact they are one man's interpretation. While a lot of people might jump on a bandwagon and complain that its not like the book, they might bond in their common beliefe. However, if each of those people made a version of the book, each would be diffferent. Each would see it his/her own way. In my opinion, thats what makes an author like Tolkien such an amazing writer. He can create a story and only give us just enough to get us started. From there he lets our imagination fill in.

WIth Peter Jackson, he see's things the way that he see's things. Even though they might not exactly match your or my interpretation, its unique.

I for one love his vision of the books, appreciate the appeal for young and old, male and female alike. Its pretty amazing the universal appeal that these movie have, and I for one am glad.

Basically it boils down to this with this adaption and ALL adaptions for me. If you like the book, go read it. IF you like the movie great. Don't compare, they aren't the same and weren't ever meant to be....

:)

Yes, the movie was fantastic and, imo, better than the Fellowship of the Ring. Most of the movie was great, but for people who've read the books (like me), might seem a bit disappointed. For one reason, the elves at Helm's Deep never happend in the book, but nonetheless, it was spectacular. THe battle of Helms Deep was the greatest part in the movie, for me. The action was phenomenal! I personally loved the humor of Gimili, but too far. He was really portrayed as a fierce warrior in the books.

Gollum/Smeagol was the greatest part to see. He looks just like I imagined when I read the books. He appeared so real in the movie that it blew my mind. I loved the argument of Gollum and Smeagol, but what made me mad was that people laughed at it. It suupose to be serious.

The whole fake Aragorn death did not suprise me. Wasnt in the book, and didnt really impress me at all. They should've left it out. And tell me if im wrong, but i dont quite remember the Wargs attacking the Rohan people whn they were on their way to Helms Deep.

The Ents themselves were great, but the whole Entmoot (the event where all the Ents were discussion) wasnt as i expected. It was portrayed as a more deeply concern in the book. Tho, the Ents were great to see. one of my other favortie scenes was seeing Gandalf fighting the Balrog!

Frodo and Sam was great to see aswell. But the whole thing that Faramir wanted to take the ring to Gondor never happend in the book. Yes, he was seduced by the ring, but had enough power to resist. The Nazgul on the flying beast was not great. The book depicted it as more terrifying, but wasnt much in the movie.

BTW, remember what Gollum and Smeagol were discussing at the end of the movie? How they wanted to kill Frodo and take the ring. Did you hear him say that "she" will do it for them? Man, i was dissapointed they didnt show "she". "She" was at the end of the TTT book, but i guess they show "she" in the next movie
