Blizzard's new sci-fi MMO is set to rock the world later this month, CVG has learned

The long-rumoured new instalment of Blizzard's massive StarCraft series is set to be unveiled later this month - and it's another massively-multiplayer online game in the style of World of Warcraft, CVG can reveal.

Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea - the epicentre of the sci-fi RTS series' rabid fandom.

It took a good day of calls and emails, but Blizzard just got back to us about the rumor floating around that Starcraft 2 will be announced next month during their World Wide Invitation in Seoul, South Korea.

According to a Korean website, StarCraft 2 is being developed in 3D with a new race and lots of changes for existing units. The site went on to say that additional details would be revealed during Blizzard's WWI on May 19th in Seoul.

When reached for comment today this was Blizzard's official response:

We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present.

So that's a yes on a StarCraft 2, eventually, and a yes to a product announcement next month. The only question now is are they one in the same. -Brian Crecente, from Kotaku

On the 25th, according to the game developers, it has been confirmed that Blizzard Entertainment Korea (aka Blizzard Korea) will present VODs and game content at the WWI that is starting on May 19th. Also, StarCraft 2's main developers will also attend to answer some questions.

Blizzard's WWI is on its third year and will take place from May 19th to 20th at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Stadium and Weight Lifting Stadium (translator's note: I thought it was fencing? o.O). Heh. I've also been in contact with Blizzard, and they said they would get back to me later today or Monday and they would give me some information. More than likely it is the same sort of response Kotaku has :D

Oh Gosh... I don't know what I'm more excited about. World of Diablo, (if it keeps the Diablo flavor and doesn't have you hunting demon skins for quests.) or Diablo 3!!!

Diablo 3 but not the D3 were all expecting,,, DIABLO ONLINE ,,MMO diablo

the ONLY mmo that could topple WoW

and i play WoW so im not a WoW hater

I don't care what they announce. I want that game just to watch the in-game CGI movies. Blizzard has always had the most kick-ass cinematics. I can't wait to see what they'll do with an updated Diablo or Starcraft.

My friend's, brother's cousin's sister's..ect..who knows a guy that used to work at Blizzard says that it's DEFINATELY SC2.

*Crosses Fingers* I hope its Starcraft II Diablo III would be great but the story is pretty much dead in LOD :s and as longs at it uses Battle.Net im happy
