 Cross-fading isn't close to being real gapless playback.

Basically all that setting does is skip silence. What if the track is supposed to have some silence at the end (and/or beginning) of it?

Gapless playback requires the file encoder to store gapless info in the headers as part of the file format (ie LAME or XING headers for mp3), and a decoder capable of reading this information. Currently all directShow players cannot do this, including WMP.

The .wma encoders don't even store gapless information.

So, the question still stands, is this added to WMP12 (and thus to DirectShow) in Windows 7?

WMP does do a great job at it though. If you enable the crossfading and set it to 0 like said before, you notice WMP starts preloading the next file and instantly starts playing it. It does really work, it's like crossfading just instantly without fading.

Windows Media Player 11 is very good and have the best sound quality . And if you think that isnt one of the most important things for one player and almost shure most important for audio files mp3 ect. You people are so so .. strange. Tell Me if It ISNT .someone ?

I want for media player 12 at last one One simple kernel streaming because i think it will be better than other players with this plug-in.(better sounding)

and Why they dont add WASAPI support for it .To add , but to hide the on / off option in the player options .I mean users to launch it manually (the audiophils:)

because of the other sounds. I think if they dont launch that feauture this will be one of the most stuppid things .

Because this is simple SOUND QUALITY ! isn't it ? and why not to include it ? I belive there will be many positive for that and not negative reactions. So why not

It has pretty good sound quality compared to some of the other popular programs out there, but "the best" is pushing it.

i have tons of videos on vista that dont run on a clean install, i hate playing around installing codecs, i just install vlc player instead.

but windows media player 12 can play ALL of my videos so far, after clean install, with nothing else, i love it.

  • 1 month later...

nevermind i noticed i have to hide libarties of WMP to autohide the interface

WMP12 in full screen the interface doesn't auto-hide as it used to on WMP11 that really annoying

the only way around it is using Media center instead

Has anyone noticed how much win media player 12 "improves" the video quality of a file? I had what I thought was a pretty poor quality episode of Arrested Development (on a side note, one of the best shows ever) and played tested them with both VLC and Quicktime, and they both played in the same poor quality.

On wmp 12, the same file looked at least 10 X better! I tried it on other movies/ episodes, and each one had greatly improved quality on wmp 12. Can anyone explain why this is?

7 comes with all sorts of shiny new codecs that previous versions of Windows did not. Whatever new codecs Microsoft has must be doing it.

Does it have like total play time when watching video? As 11th doesn't.

you mean like when you click on the counter and it changes? It works on mine.

I'm glad yours works. I have over 2,000 DivX movies backed up. WMP can't play a single one even though it says it auto-obtained the codec.

The only thing that works for me is VLC and it didn't have to go out and find anything.

It shouldn't need to auto-obtain the codec. For reference, it has not and will not auto-download any AVI or MPEG codec as far as I'm aware, so that's probably a red herring.

What are the actual properties of the """DIVX""" file? That's such a generic term it's utterly meaningless. A sample clip showing the problem would be relatively interesting, potentially. Since MPEG4-in-AVI support should work in-box, I'd suggest that either you have some strange variant flavor that the player chokes on (does it work on a second system?) or that you have some codec that's stomped on the player codec. Which I believe the player tries to avoid, since that'd be dumb on their part.

This is assuming you're referring to WMP12, part of Windows 7. If you're using random MPEG4 codecs in previous versions of the player, all bets are off.

WMP12 is nice, but i really hate the detached Now Playing window. They should at least have the option to attach it like in 11. But other than that, WMP is the player i use for music and videos. For dvds I use PowerDVD. Only use VLC and MPC for videos that dont work in WMP.

    • The reviews you refer to mean nothing. Where there is no journalism there is no reason to call the gaming media's opinion pieces "reviews". For GP games there is indeed a metric for success - increasing subscriptions. Which turns in revenue. The only circumstance in which subs do not rise when great is being released is a Game Pass system where the company is close to fully saturated with customers in a subscription. However, in that case as the theory goes you spend aplenty in all kind of games - from shady live service cash cows and customer offending agitprop crap in purple colours to robust and entertaining single player games. And keep a solid level of profitability. Ignoring the simply innocuous but mid games MGS has released primarily of the second kind.
    • Report: Microsoft to use AWS to help GitHub deal with a major surge in demand by Pradeep Viswanathan Thanks to the surge of coding AI agents, GitHub's usage has skyrocketed over the past 12 months. To meet this demand, GitHub started with a plan in October 2025 to increase capacity by 10x. However, by early this year, the company realized that it needed 30x scale. This rapid growth has caused severe strain on the platform's reliability, resulting in several small outages over the past few months. In April, GitHub published a long blog post explaining the steps it is taking to resolve these reliability issues. In the post, the company also confirmed that it is working toward a multi-cloud architecture for better resilience. Today, Business Insider reported that GitHub is turning to Amazon Web Services to help deal with a major surge in AI-driven coding activity. It is important to note that GitHub is still in the process of moving completely to the Azure cloud. The current plan is to move the platform fully to Azure by 2027 so that it can scale better as per developer demand. Therefore, the current decision to utilize AWS might be part of a short-term plan to meet immediate demand. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub is using multiple cloud providers with the following statement: For Microsoft, the decision highlights the operational pressure behind the AI boom. GitHub has to stay reliable for developers at a time when rivals such as Codex, Cursor, Claude Code, and other AI coding tools are gaining attention. And the decision to use AWS for computing capacity seems practical given the circumstances.
