There is lot of talk lately about December 21st, 2012. A lot of people believe that the world will end on this day (based on information that this day marks the end of the Mayan Calender).

Well, my calendar ends Dec 31, 2008. But you know why I don't worry? I can go to the store and buy another calendar, and that one will end Dec 31, 2009. :p Someone needs to send the Mayans to a Walmart

I dont understand what the bug fuss is about ending the calender on a random date such as that. Think about it..Ok lets lay this out.

The Aztek's started around the 1370's and fell in the 1520's. Either way around it, thats a LOT of writing. Imagine drawing out a calender for 100 years, it would take a long time, and most of us would say F**k this, I know I would..

Man that would be the worst birthday ever :(

Yeah, but how many can say they had a birthday and a deathday on 1 day? hehe

Just my 2.5 cents, I think it'll be just another day, there are so many different cultures that have their own predictions, rules, religions that any of those could also affect any predictions they make. Cultural beliefs skew common knowledge and understanding, which is why Christians have their own predictions, muslims, mayans, egyptians, incans, they have all had different takes on how the world will end. Putting it on a calendar isn't going to help that.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I have read on Neowin.

You haven't been here that long, just give it time.

umm, this is a valid thing to look into everyone.

There are the mayans, ancient chinese, and many other cultures who have their calendars end at 2012, dec 21st.

Let me let you know about our current situation, and what is supposed to happen in the next 5 years....

About 7 years ago, a sun spot appeared on the sun. This is not an odd event, but is a signal, that within the next coming years, there will be a flip of the polars on the sun. The thing that does make this sun spot interesting though, is the shape, size, and how long it lasted. Most sun spots will appear on either the north or south side of the sun, range in the size of some huge planets, and will last around 3 months ( it may be days though..). But this sun spot, appeared in the middle of the sun ( such has never been witnessed ) , was the size of a very small planet, and lasted for but 3 hours or so. So scientist are thinking this polar flip is going to be very strong and abnormal to the normal ones we have, predicting that tons of radiation will spread through out space. And this is were our planet, and today falls in. We are in the middle of global warming, and our o-zone is very very weak. If it doesnt improve significantly with in the next years, we will be facing some bad threats, that we can do nothing about.

When the sun flips its polars, it will spread a ton of radiation. Our o-zone will be to weak to absorb it all. Who knows what it will really do. But the mayans say this is not the end of the earth, but just a rebirth.

I have done a ton of research on this, just because, for so many ancient cultures to see the same thing, and for their knowledge of the time, its just really eerie. The mayans mapped out our galaxy, including the milkyway. They had knowledge and other things that we dont even know about.

You dont have to believe in the destruction of the world, cause that is really highly unlikely. Believe in the destruction of life though.

Apparently, somehow in "all your research" you missed the fact that the o-zone blocks UV radiation. Earth's magnetic field protects us from the majority of the sun's EM radiation.

So according to you and "your research", the apocalypse comes in the form of very bad sunburns.

We have the potential to destroy ourselves, and I think that time could be coming soon. The 20th century has been remembered as the bloodiest so far, yet it's evident that as we evolve, things only get bloodier. Is that not enough to say that the 21st could be worse than the 20th?

Interesting argument, no doubt.

Medking

This century is actually considered one of the most peaceful times in the civilization of humans on this world. The wars are over exagerated compared to past ones so much by media.

Millions and millions have been dying in the past of very bloody magnetudes, and now its like a lot less. (very deep statment :D )

[*]They also note that in the final years of earth, the water level will rise (icecaps are melting now), climate will get hotter (global warming), and natural disasters will occur (hurricanes, tsunamis).

I'm not religious, and I usually think these kinds of things are bs... but honestly, this is scary. Things are lining up too perfectly...

p.s. - another culture specified that before the ultimate end of the world (dec. 21), chaos will happen including a war like never fought before originating in the middle east. o_O

Many scientists have said that the natural disasters are normal they come in waves, and such. They have said global warming may of had an effect on them but not way 2 much. they go in like 100 year waves (theyve sorta lined that up with documents of areas of the world, where generations ago they had really bad **** but most people dont' hear about it now sicne they all be dead)

Now the other points i dont kno much about but there you go.

The US will no longer be the worlds super power. China, Brazil, and some other country will be in power!

- and my molson canadian will be as fresh as ever!

Probably planning on going home to be with the family for xmas

ps i think a super volcano would be sweet, i saw a discovery 2 hour special called, Super Volcano, and it was about a huge magma chamber under yellow stone national park, and if it were to erupt it would like completely **** the USA and most of Canada (f*ck meaning not necessarily killing everyone but making it to hard to live) and everyone moved to like the pacific, they had like a few years of failed crops around the world they said (at a sum up of what happened after segment)

Was pretty in depth, may i suggest that if you can watch it!

What's "sweet" about that >_>? Heh.

    • Apple Watch Series 11 GPS just crashed to 30% off in this fast-moving Prime Day deal by Karthik Mudaliar The Apple Watch Series 11 is available for $279, down from its $399 list price, saving buyers $120, or 30%. Amazon labels the offer as selling fast, so the current price may not remain available for long. This GPS model features a 42mm aluminum case, an Always-On Retina LTPO3 OLED display capable of reaching up to 2,000 nits, and an Ion-X glass surface with improved scratch resistance. Apple rates Series 11 for up to 24 hours of normal use or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, with fast charging providing up to eight hours of use from a 15-minute charge. Health and fitness tools include sleep scoring, temperature sensing, ECG support, heart-rate alerts, workout tracking, sleep apnea notifications, and hypertension notifications, where available. The watch also carries IP6X dust resistance and 50-meter water resistance. This configuration is best suited to iPhone owners who want comprehensive health tracking, notifications, contactless payments, and workout data without stepping up to a larger or cellular-equipped model. The smaller case should also appeal to buyers who prefer a lighter watch, while the S/M band fits wrists measuring 130mm to 180mm. With the current generation now significantly below its usual retail price, this is a strong time to replace an aging Apple Watch or buy a first model without compromising on Apple’s newest health and display features. • GitHub removes manual model selection from Copilot free and student plans by Karthik Mudaliar GitHub is removing the ability to manually select an AI model from its Copilot Free and Student plans, making its automatic routing system the default and only way to choose a model. This means users on these tiers will no longer be able to deliberately select a particular OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Microsoft model for a task. In its announcement, GitHub said Copilot Auto will dynamically choose what it considers the best model for each request. Free and Student accounts will retain access to models from multiple families, although the available selection will continue to depend on the restrictions attached to each plan. GitHub did not identify a fixed pool of models that Auto will always use, and its documentation warns that model availability can change over time. GitHub describes Auto as more than a random fallback system. On supported surfaces, its task-optimization technology evaluates the complexity of a request alongside real-time information about model health and availability. Straightforward prompts can be routed to faster and less expensive models, while more demanding coding tasks may be sent to higher-cost reasoning models. The company says this approach should reduce rate limiting, latency, and failed requests. Auto generally selects one model along natural prompt-caching boundaries rather than repeatedly switching models during a session, as GitHub found that mid-session changes increased costs without producing sufficient improvements in output quality. Users can still check which model generated a response. In Copilot Chat, the information appears when hovering over an answer, while Copilot CLI and the Copilot cloud agent display the selected model alongside their output. Auto is available in Copilot Chat, Copilot CLI, and the cloud agent, with the exact implementation and release status varying between supported development environments. The latest restriction follows several months of adjustments to Copilot’s individual plans. GitHub temporarily halted new Pro, Pro+, and Student subscriptions in April as it sought to manage demand and service reliability. It later introduced token-based billing and began gradually reopening individual-plan registrations on June 17. Alongside the picker change, GitHub is retiring the “Preview” label from Microsoft-developed models. It argues that the label is no longer necessary because Auto handles model routing and models are continuously updated behind the scenes.
